TL;DR: Saturday, July 28th: MONGOLIAN GRILL, 12 NOON. After eats, dress in yukata (at the JCCC) and enjoy the festival! EVERYONE WELCOME, for either lunch, the festival, or both!
http://www.genghiskhanmongoliangrill.com/home.asp Yes, I remember the issues we had last time with the bill, but hey; I liked the food enough to go there again despite that. And lunch is cheaper than dinner, too.
In addition to the Gujo Odori event, I just found out that it's a whole mini festival (Natsu Matsuri, I think; summer festival). It starts at 3pm. There'll be food stalls and other entertainers, including taiko and shinnai nagashi, a special style of shamisen playing from the Edo period.
More details in this article: Click me!, part of which is copied below.
Quote: The festival will start at 3:00 p.m. with a variety of activities including games and activities for the kids. There will be vendors with a wide range of wares including traditional Japanese toys, handicrafts, and delicious, tasty treats. Magnificent performances include taiko drums, odori (Japanese dancing), live music and a rare Shinnai Nagashi performance. Wildly popular in the Edo period (1603-1867AD), Shinnai Nagashi is a traditional Japanese musical performance style where musicians, using only shamisens (Japanese lute) and their voices, walk through the streets singing songs of lost love and jilted lovers. In Edo times, patrons would call these performers in from the street, where for a sum of money, they would perform at parties and other events. Shinnai songs were even banned for a time during the Edo period as too sad – the legend is that Shinnai songs were connected to several high profile suicides at the time! At 5:00 p.m., the GUJO ODORI performance begins with some of the best musicians and singers of Gujo Hachiman, Japan, and of course many, many yukata (summer kimono) clad dancers!
On the afternoon of Saturday 28 June 2008 Gujo Odori will be performed from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre (JCCC) at 6 Garamond Court, Don Mills ON.
Date/Time: June 28th (Saturday) 5-8pm
There's a photo gallery from last year on the website: http://www.odori.ca/ (tis frames, otherwise I'd link it directly). Looks like a ton of fun!

I am willing to help dress people in yukata at the JCCC if they need help. Yukata are pretty easy, even though I don't know that many musubi. ^^; We plan on being at the restaurant around noon; we have a few errands to run on the way to Toronto, but we should still make it in time.
If you know before Saturday if you want to come, please post or email or something, so we know approximate numbers. If you need a pickup on the way in, we might be able to arrange it (but not a ride home, as we'll probably be going in the other direction to stay with relatives).
Gujo Odori is the annual bon dance festival of Gujo Hachiman, in Gifu Prefecture Japan, pop. 16,000. It is one of the three most important dance festivals in Japan, and is designated a significant intangible cultural folk asset by the Japanese Government. Every year, over 350,000 people attend this festival which is held on 33 nights from mid-July until early September. On four of those thirty-three nights, called Tetsuya Odori, it is not uncommon to have over 50,000 people participate. For Tetsuya Odori, the dancing begins at sunset and continues until day-break.
The goal of the "Bring Gujo Odori to Toronto in 2008 Committee" is to bring this unique and important dance festival to Toronto, Ontario Canada for two evenings of open air dancing in Toronto. On these two evenings, 27th and 28th June 2008, we will recreate a traditional Japanese bon dance in the heart of one of the world's most vibrant and multicultural cities. Singers, musicians and dancers from Gujo Hachiman Japan will be here to perform live and share their love and knowledge of this important cultural folk festival. This event is one of several celebrating 80 years of Japan - Canada diplomatic relations.
Where: On Friday 27 June 2008 Gujo Odori will be performed from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm in front of Toronto's Metro Hall, near King & John Streets.

~~~~~
We shall be attending on Saturday, as I now have Saturdays and Sundays off (as of June 15th). We're planning on coming out for the day on Saturday, kitted out (or kitting out at the JCCC) in yukata, and joining in the dancing. We're hoping to spend that night in Oakville with relatives.
Anyone up for meeting for a late lunch/early dinner? Attending with us?
