Sakurakai Dance Recital: Toronto - Dec 5

So, while in planning a first event for the kimono club, I learned from another friend that there's already an awesome event going on the day we chose - Dec 5 - and it's at the JCCC. It's the Sakura Kai Dance Recital, and it's in honour of their 50th year, so I'm hoping it'll be big! There's not much advertising at all, unfortunately, but there will also be a taiko group there, and obviously, lots of people in kimono (though they'll likely mostly be the dancers). I figure it's a great event to wear kimono to, and to promote the founding of the TKC!

Sakura Kai 50th Anniversary Recital

Date: Sunday, Dec 5th
Time: 2pm
Location: Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre, 6 Garamond Court (just off Wynford on the DVP)

What:
The Sakura Kai Japanese dance (odori) group is proudly celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and will have a recital to commemorate this significant milestone. The recital will feature semi-classical odori and folk dances performed by students and teachers. Special guest performers will be Sakura Kai Alumni and the Yakudo taiko group.

The recital will be held in Kobayashi Hall at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre on Sunday December 5, 2010 at 2:00 pm. Tickets are $15 (please make cheques payable to Sakura Kai) and will be available for purchase through the JCCC at 416-441-2345.

If you call them, they will tell you to drop by or mail in a cheque. I'm going to mail mine in with the names of those the tickets are for, and they'll hold them for pickup on the day of. The woman on the phone said they still had "LOTS" of tickets. In a way, that's good, as I can go, but sad because I think it's partially due to the lack of advertising. (It's not even on their JCCC calendar on the website!)

Note: there IS a fairly large change room with the bathrooms at the JCCC if you wanted to change there!

I'd also love to do dinner/tea afterward (I have no idea how long it lasts, but I'm going to guess a few hours at least). According to google maps, there are a few coffee-shops closer to Don Mills (Paul's Coffee shop, Thomas Coffee shop, Tim Hortons), and a possibly Chinese restaurant that looks yummy (Congee Star). There's a Swiss Chalet (Don Mills), a Golden Griddle (on Eglinton, near Don Mills), Tea Masters (S on Don Mills)...There's also "Memories of Japan", a bit further north on Don Mills (but not that much further) if we wanted to stick to the Japanese theme. I was hoping to avoid the Mongolian Grill while in kimono. XD

Also, we can probably drive 1-2 more people, depending on how squishy they don't mind being. We usually pick up kazahaya at Yorkdale Mall, so if someone else needed a ride, we can pick up there as well.

P.S. Anyone else like treats and interested in a treat exchange the same weekend? See this post! So far we have rum cake (I'm going to make them like little muffins/cupcakes) and lemon squares.

Catching up on "What I did" stuff

Last weekend was the 1st of July, which, aside from being Canada Day (YAY!) was the first ever Trivia Night organized by Everest of Apples, the JET charity for our prefecture. They send money to support and build a school in Nepal.

( In order not to spam my FL, click the cut and read about itCollapse )

I think I'll write about the Leaver's party later... rather, I'll just do jot-notes.

And that brings me to now.

In car news, the car is registered in Alberta, so I don't have to change that. And he can't have it out in Edmonton for me, but he's offered to fly me out to BC so I can save time (won't have to drive out there) and then drive back. Won't have to change the name for insurance as it's in his name and he's willing to leave it that way if cheaper, but I just don't know how that will work if I technically will own the car. We'll see! Yay! Now I have to figure out what days I want to go to BC...

Since it seems I shall have a car, I will be attending CNA. Yay! But probably only Saturday, maybe Sunday, not sure...

COSTUMECON PEEPS
They now offer payments with paypal! Yay! Did anyone else want to get in on this and make one payment all together? I want to pay before Oct 31st as then it goes up another $10. I am willing to make the payment from my paypal account.

Found this odd picture while searching for info on Ozashiki Kouta... I've never seen anyone wear hakama with a dress shirt and tie before. I wonder if he'd wear a haori with this. I actually didn't even notice he was wearing hakama at first.

It's from this website, about some group's trip to Canada.

Uwaaa~~ URESHII!

Alright, I'll recap and stuff...

( I finally learned the name of the man who runs the conbini near my houseCollapse )

And now I am home... relaxing, and probably heading to bed early. I got some of my kimono stuff put away since I had to get ready for dance, and I labelled some of my things since sometimes we get confused with things at kitsuke class.

I activated my Visa, which is good, since I hope I can use it to buy a ticket home from Japan (must get looking soon!). And I signed my tax paper, but have to remember to put it in an envelope to mail form work tomorrow.

I'm pleased to say that I'm done with the stomach meds, and I still feel ok. Yokatta!

It's raining now, but nothing bad. Was only sprinkling on the way home from dancing, so that was nice. It lowers the temperature since it's so muggy here and I was so sweaty walking to and from work. Stupid weather! Rainy season is coming. Not looking forward to that.

Four in One

Alright, well, since I didn't update on the nihonbuyou lessons last week Thursday or this week Tuesday, it's all going to be done now. Not enough is happening in each lesson to bother with an entire entry just for it. That's three. The fourth is kimono kitsuke stuff from Wednesday.

( Nihonbuyou Lessons 11-13Collapse )

I think that's enough about the dancing, since I still have to post about kitsuke and it's not like that will be really short, either. Well, maybe I can make it shorter...

( KitsukeCollapse )

I don't think I forgot anything... but who knows. If I did I'll just update later.

Hope you all enjoyed your questions from the previous post!

Oh, and I <3 KKM. Still.

And it's past my bedtime. Trying to go to bed around 11ish, but sometimes it's difficult, even though I have a hell of a time waking up in the morning. :/

Dancing in the rain...

I found my glasses! YAY! Somehow, they were in the bag that I had last night. Which is really strange, since I swear I emptied it this morning looking for them and didn't see them. Darn gremlins, I hate when they do that. So now I won't get headaches staring at the screen anymore.

Tonight I had dancing, so it's the twice-weekly Nihonbuyou update. Most interesting thing tonight: Nishiki has a crest and it's put on their kimono for when they need a crested one for dancing. This is it (don't ask me what flower that is, I have no idea and she couldn't tell me):

Wig peoples - sorry for the delay. Please send me your addresses to my LJ nickname AT gmail.com. Thanks. Then I can give you shipping costs. I'll see if I can get Ger to mail them so the time taken in transport won't be so long as they'd be mailed from the base.

Walk like a....

First - thank you Naomi! <3 I was having an up-and-down day the other day, and your small parcel with the city talk magazine came in along with the keychain and cheered me right up. The colors are lovely!

... I do hope that's everything I did at class today!

Dancing the night away...

( Nihonbuyou Lesson #4Collapse )

After dancing was Indian food with Ger, who was looking good, and lots of fun conversation. Yummy Sag Chicken and fresh naan bread. I really need to start cooking at home again, though, since I’ve been eating out a lot lately. :/ Uses money and probably isn’t as healthy. I need to buy veggies, so I think after work today I have to go home and get my Universe shopping bag and pick some up. I also need something to get a design onto craft foam, so it’s off to the 100yen shop for me after work. I get to make crowns tonight for the play. Don’t know if I should make one for the princess, though, since she’ll have her hair done for her dancing at the Spring Party and I don’t know what style she’ll have it in.

Random thought - What's acceptable for the AN Red&White show? Or the "opening ceremonies" or whatever at AN? Would doing nihonbuyou be appropriate and/or acceptable?

Hmm, I want a nihonbuyou icon or something... I might have to go paid account to get more iconage. I usually just cycle through them, but dancing makes me so happy, I always feel good when I leave...

Nihonbuyo Lesson 3 and other random stuff

Just got back from Nihonbuyo.

( I am proud of myself.Collapse )

I can’t wait for next week! I am so sad for starting dance so late and not getting to do it for 3 years. >.<

School was spent researching pharmacy schools. I think I might look into physiotherapy schools tomorrow. I’m actually quite excited about the whole prospect.

The teacher I work with asked me to evaluate the students participation in class out of ten. He counted this for his mark as well. And today he talked to my supervisor about something, and I think it was about journals for the third years and how it should be part of their marks and expanding that for the other grades as well. I’m not really sure, though, since my supervisor is retiring, and I don’t know why he’d explain something like that to her in that case.

In any case, I think he might be the ichinensei homeroom teacher next year, and I’m sure we’ll do the journal homework thing.

Also, got a gathering of ppl for the Isawa Kawanakajima Reenactment in Yamanashiken. Looking forward to that! I imagine this will be the largest Aomori contingent ever; Sunil, me, Travis, Charlie, Toby, Brad, Alex, and Nobuko will be joining up with my bud Ronin in Tokyo (works for Geos) and his friends. Can’t wait for April 16th. It’s shaping up to be quite the blast.

Robin Hood Prince of Thieves has been on the BS1 channel since yesterday, playing over and over. So now I just changed it to BS2, but I have no idea what it is. It has Matthew Broderick in it, I think...and a lot of black people. Civil war movie? Oh, and Morgan Freeman. Had to search IMDB for it. I guess it’s called Glory. DUDE! Cary Elwes!!! I heard his voice before I saw his credits. Me <3s the man in black. With his voice, that’s the only thing I can think of. Even in a Civil War movie. I’m just not in the mood for war movies, though right now.

...I just ran out of kerosene. :/ Must remember to put out the red things tomorrow so that I can have them filled up while I'm at work.

Now to flip thru the dance kimono books and drool.
