lessons learned from a gander

so the salmon are coming. which means that aaron is going fishing more often. a few days ago he went to a new location early in the morning & sent me an email with a picture of what it looked like. it was practically shoulder to shoulder on the pier & the shoreline wasn't much different. so we had to see it in person. we went to browns point with all the girls to take a gander & i couldn't believe it.

we enjoyed our time there watching the fishermen but the girls started to get border & were looking for something to do. reese came up to me & asked me if i had any gloves to which i replied "why?". "well, i want to pick up trash". we improvised with a grocery bag that had our snacks in it. all three big girls scanned the park & shoreline until that bag was full. several fishermen thanked them for cleaning up & tried to give me credit to which i gave the proper recognition. i was so proud of reese. on our way home we were talking about it & we asked reese what inspired her idea. this was her response.

"i looked around & saw all this trash. i thought that somebody needed to clean that up. well, i guess i need to be that person".

i can't help but think what a profound statement my 7 year old made in, "i guess i need to be that person". how many times do we come across something & think "somebody needs to do that" but never take responsibility? i am going to try harder to follow her foot steps & "be that person".

on a side note, as we were leaving the park. evb & i passed a couple making out on a park bench. she said something that i didn't understand & i heard the man say "did you hear what she said?" to his partner and then she laughed. i was curious & asked evb to repeat what she had said. "those guys shouldn't kiss like that". no wonder they were laughing.

i told reese she was on mabel watch while i was doing something. this is what i found later. surprisingly it worked!

toothfairy woes

is it just me or has the rate for a tooth fairy visit gone up? reese lost a tooth & the tooth fairy didn't visit (because reese forgot to write a note...that was the excuse). so the next day reese wrote a note & demanded two dollars instead of one as payment for forgetting. really? one dollar was a high price for a useless tooth to begin with. regardless, the toothfairy obliged. the next day, charley lost her first tooth & was disappointed because she only got a dollar. however, i have to give the toothfairy credit for trying to make that one dollar cool by leaving a one dollar gold coin. guess you can never win.
