Girls Gotta Grow

Life with small children is hilarious. Adelaide is constantly keeping us in stitches. She is starting to sound out letters and can get through some simple words. Adelaide's also really starting to get into fashion, with an opinion all her own. She wears her princess crown almost everywhere, thinks her red and white starred skirt goes with everything and accessorizes with lots of purple. Adelaide loves to help around the house and when we're out doing errands.   This is her purple "princess" dress.  Blueberry milkshake face! Hmmmm... reflecting on the deeper meaning of "Down by the Bay." Eleanor is our determined and tenacious girl. She doesn't know the meaning of the word, "no." Literally, we think she thinks "no" means, "do it again," or, "this time bang it harder."  Eleanor is a woman of many pacifiers and few words. But, she makes her presence known with lots of hugs, kisses, c...

The Other Side of the Tidal Basin

We've lived in DC for six years now and have never ventured to the far side of the tidal basin. It's a long walk... and the only thing that is REALLY over there is the FDR memorial. But, with the grand opening on the Martin Luther King Jr. memorial last spring, we decided we should finally put on our walking shoes and take the hike out to see both memorials. First we saw the George Mason Memorial. No pictures there. It was a bit of a neglected memorial. The fountains were off, and the crowds just passed it by. That said, it was still really interesting. But, the only other person there was smoking (despite the large NO SMOKING signs.... poor George Mason, no respect). Adelaide insisted on making tortured, it-is-so-stinky faces the whole time, so we moved on quickly. The FDR memorial was a walking time-line of his presidency with quotes on granite walls, large statues of forgotten men in food lines and turbulent waterfalls that the park ranger indicated were highligh...

The 4-H Fair

Occassionally, we like to take our certifiably city girls out into the country...well, at least into the suburbs, and expose them to some wildlife beyond the trash-stealing squirrels in our neighborhood. Given how much they love their new IKEA farm set from Aunt Eve and Uncle Jed, we had high hopes that they might really enjoy the 4-H fair last weekend. Okay, maybe our hopes weren't high, but we did have hopes. I mean, what kids don't like petting bunny rabbits (our kids, our kids don't like petting bunny rabbits). Eleanor really loved the horses, until one of them turned to look at her. Then she yelled, "Nuh! Nuh! Nuh!" and tried to climb over Mommy's back. Melinda pictured here because the girls were too  "chicken" to hold the chicks. Get it? Adelaide did end up working up the courage after a few minutes. But, it hopped off her hand pretty quickly, so no snapshot. Bawk, bawk! To be fair, there was some genuin...
