Well, if I put it on the blog that means its official, so here we go. I'm moving. There, whew, I feel much better, don't you? In 9 days the movers come to haul my stuff down to North Carolina and, although I’m so sad to leave all of my wonderful friends and New York City, I’m ready to head back down South and be close to my friends and family there.
This move should be fairly easy since I’m already packing and trying to be very organized. I’ve hired movers too, which will make it considerably easy for me since the day of the move I will merely point, give direction and offer lemonade to people. Very different from my move INTO the city…..
When I was moving into the city I contemplated getting movers but my boyfriend at the time convinced me we could hire a U-Haul and with the help of my brother, do it ourselves. Wrong. Wrong, wrong, wrong. When we got to the U-Haul store they said “Oh, we have your reservation here but we have no truck in stock for you. Sorry.” After shear panic and a minor mental breakdown, my ex-boyfriend and I set out to do the impossible. Move all my stuff to New York via my 4-Runner. We laid the back seat down, loaded it up and made trip after trip after trip. Round about noon my brother appeared, clutching a Gatorade bottle and looking like he had been having a grand ole time out on the town the night before. He was ready to help though, which was nice….even if he did sit down and take a break every 15 minutes. Regardless, we had moved the smaller stuff but still had some major items to go….like my mattress and box spring
We soon found out the box spring didn’t fit in the back of the 4-Runner. That’s when Tweedledumb and Tweedledumber had the idea that they could strap the box spring to the roof of the SUV and drive it into the city….which may have worked if they hadn’t used flimsy twine and hadn’t been driving down I-95 at 80 miles an hour. Needless to say an hour later I get a phone call informing me that my box spring had flown off the top of the SUV, they had driven around looking for it and had recently spotted it broken into 1000 pieces on the side of the highway.
Later I found out that this was the conversation that had occurred in the car right after the box spring flew the coop. This is my made up version but I would say its probably fairly accurate.
Ex-Boyfriend: Well, you better call Ellen and tell her what happened.
Alston: Hi. You’re obviously new here so let me explain a few things to you. We are not calling her. She is going to literally lose her mind and her head will start spinning around, she will grow Devil horns and scream at you until you crawl into the fetal position begging for mercy. Believe me, I know.
Ex-Boyfriend: She will understand, it was an honest mistake.
Alston: You aren’t going to last long with that attitude, my friend.
After driving around to find it and seeing it smashed.
Ex-Boyfriend: Alright, let’s call her.
Alston: Here's the phone. Be my guest. I’m not calling her.
Ex-Boyfriend: Well I’m not calling her either.
Alston: Trust me, its better if you call. You are still new, she has to be nice to you so you don’t see that she is crazy. THEY ARE ALL CRAZY.
And he was right (about me being nicer to the ex-boyfriend AND all girls being crazy). I think I handled the news fairly well considering we had been moving and driving and moving and driving for 2 days straight and I was ready to keel over. I was just glad it wasn’t my mattress which was far more expensive. I eventually got moved into the apartment I still currently live in and although at the time I was nervous to be moving to "the big city" I've loved living here. I’ve love this apartment, my neighborhood, and my friends and I’m sad to leave but its time. I will give more moving and packing updates soon so stay tuned! I'm SURE there will be some moving drama to report on!
