A single bowl of rice.
If possible, make it ochazuke—
and if you feel like it, add a little bonito broth.
Not miso soup—wakame soup.
Yes. Wakame soup is the most desirable.
For animal protein, two pieces of chicken tenderloin warmed in the microwave.
Add a side of bean sprouts, carrots, and cabbage—warmed, then seasoned like namul.
That is breakfast. One meal a day.
If you have a salad of raw vegetables, you may add one more plate.
If you get tired of chicken tenderloin, leftovers from the family’s dinner the day before are fine.
If there is curry, then curry.
Still, I try not to take too much meat.
Even if I say “one meal a day,” you don’t have to be rigid about it.
If I’m hungry, I’ll casually eat potato chips or chocolate.
I don’t endure too much.
Enduring too much is a sign you’ll quit halfway.
When I get hungry during a walk, I sometimes buy just one salted rice ball and eat it.
It’s all… loose. Flexible.
So rather than “one meal,” it’s more like 1.2 meals, or 1.5 meals a day.
That way feels just right.
As long as you don’t overeat, you won’t gain weight.
On the other hand, there are days when I don’t want to eat anything at all.
Days when 0.3, or 0.5 meals is more than enough.
What quietly adjusts this range—from 0.3 to 1.5—
is green juice, soy milk, and endless barley tea.
About 30 ml of fruit vinegar.
200 ml of soy milk.
Four or five tablespoons of plain yogurt.
Together, around 300 ml—sometimes 400 ml.
Then add green juice powder according to the volume.
And one tablespoon of kinako to replenish iron.
Shake it, and it becomes a strange khaki-colored drink.
When the desire to “feel full” is strong, I also add chopped konjac jelly.
I can’t even tell whether it tastes good.
But when I feel, “I ate a little too much today,”
I hand the adjustment of my organs over to that drink.
And when I could go without eating anything—
but still want something in my stomach—
that drink is exactly right.
In exchange, barley tea is constant. Endless.
I don’t drink alcohol at all in daily life,
but I drink about three liters of barley tea a day.
At three liters, it doesn’t reach polydipsia
(ten liters a day can risk fever),
and it doesn’t particularly make me feel unwell.
At work, I bring a two-liter thermos and keep drinking.
People at the workplace look at me like I’m a mystery, but…
I’ve lived like this for seven months, so—
if you cut me anywhere now,
only soy milk mixed with green juice, diluted by barley tea, would come out.
Still, I sometimes think it would be nice
if I could settle into 0.2 or 0.3 meals a day.
And somehow… it feels like it might happen.
