“The sea.”

Yeah… the sea.

“Your consciousness drew the sea to you.”

No, I drove here like a normal person. If I “drew” the sea, that’s called a tsunami.

“True.”

Right. Also—why are you dressed like a shrine maiden?

“Because I was one. Two thousand years ago, I think.”

I see.

“There was calamity in the village, and I was killed to appease the god.”

Seriously? That sounds painful.

“There.”

Huh?

“You instantly feel other people’s pain as if it were your own, without realizing it. If you’re not careful, you’ll try to save them even by sacrificing yourself.”

…Yeah.

“Bad habit.”

But you’re me, right? If my past life was a shrine maiden offered as a sacrifice, I’d turn out like that.

“Right.”

You’re from the Chugoku region, aren’t you? Okayama or Hiroshima—around there.

“Correct.”

Do you know the day I die?

“May 2027.”

That’s far.

“Far? There isn’t much time left.”

No, that’s far. If anything, next Thursday at 2 p.m. would be fine.

“You died once twenty-six years ago, and you still haven’t changed.”

I’ve lived double since then. I already think of this as extra time.

“Aren’t you afraid?”

Not really. I just hate pain. Death isn’t real, is it? You’re here too—like this.

“I don’t have a body.”

By the way… the guy on the bench next to us totally farted, didn’t he?

“What do you want to be reborn as?”

The sea.

“The sea?”

Yeah. The sea.

“So… salt?”

Why would you zoom in like that? I said the sea. The whole sea. Waves included. Everything is the sea. Everything is me.

“Your next life is wakame seaweed.”

…Close to the sea.

“Yeah. Almost.”

After wakame?

“French bread.”

That’s drifting away from the sea, and it’s bread. It’s not even alive.

“Objects vibrate too. Everything is a wave.”

So what’s the final form?

“Light.”

Light… like Utada Hikaru?

“No. Light.”

Light, huh… So everyone ends up there in the end?

(End)
