Try Omarchy One

Try Omarchy now uses the official Omarchy M image and package mirror, so now it works much, much better.
This puts us closer to having a matching experience with native Omarchy installations. On any Apple Silicon Mac.

Updates are also solved. Moving to new app versions is now butter smooth, and you can update Omarchy from inside the VM, just like a native installation. Worrying about VM resets is a thing of the past now.

VMs from previous versions have a migration path that will copy your files and optionally install packages that were added by hand.

All existing features remain available.

The complete Omarchy is now used, which includes some packages that were missing, such as Omawrite.

Omarchy dev is used, so all the newest features are available, but since it is not the stable channel, some bugs or glitches could exist.
stable will be available on omarchy-mac is officially released.

The OS image is now downloaded on first launch instead of being bundled with the app, because of GitHub's 2GB limit per file.

To migrate your existing VM to the new version, update the app, Launch the VM and once booted, search for "Import previous VM". Packages can be reinstalled with try-omarchy-import-previous --packages.

Menu Import Item

For contributors, the "pinned packages issue" is gone, now make fetches Omarchy and packages from official sources and will let you know if your local cache is getting old, which can then be updated by running make refresh.

v0.6.0

Choose a tag to compare

@themartiano themartiano released this 15 Oct 09:39

v0.6.0 adds VM management, Japanese and Korean input, a better migration system, and fixes. â›Đïļ

Features

  • Manage VMs: move, create and boot from different disks, plus move to Trash. Reset still erases permanently (#350)
  • JIS and Japanese support with Mozc. New VMs on Japanese Macs default to Japanese (#341, #354)
  • Korean support. New VMs on Korean Macs default to Korean (#320)
  • Show only new, revised, or unfinished VM migrations in the update review. Existing VMs without revision history receive a one-time check in a disposable overlay; later launches use per-VM revision history without repeating completed repairs (#355)
  • Use the Omarchy login-screen theme in new factory images (#337)
  • Put the quickstart near the top of the README (#344)

Fixes

  • Avoid partial package upgrades during Japanese setup: use existing repository data without refreshing it or running a system upgrade. If installed packages need updating first, keep setup pending and explain how to run omarchy update inside the VM, shut down, reopen the app, and retry Update and Launch. Failed downloads and deferred setup remain retryable; guest language, kernel, and saved boot files are retained (setup and recovery)
  • Keep the shell bar, Omarchy menu, and Super+K themed after omarchy-update brings Qt 6.12, instead of losing colors or opening a black screen. New VMs include the fix, and Update and Launch repairs existing VMs while preserving edited shell files (#347)
  • Fix microphone switching in localized guest sessions (#331)
  • Keep the guest audio bridge running when pactl times out, with bounded retries and systemd restart recovery (#342)
  • Prevent reboots in small VM windows from starting with a display too small for setup by advertising at least 800×600 to the guest (#325)
  • Remove stale Mac battery reporting when the host battery bridge disconnects (#339)
  • Fix Ghostty crashes when fonts are installed or the font cache is rebuilt by using the guest's system Fontconfig. Apply the VM update and reinstall Ghostty through the Terminal menu to rebuild an existing installation (#334)
  • Handle the default VM path and native folder-picker metadata correctly during VM selection and relocation (#350)
  • Avoid intermittent startup failures caused by the runtime capability probe (#345)
  • Seed About and screensaver branding the way upstream Omarchy does, so new VMs show the icon in About and the wordmark in the screensaver (#348)
  • Verify the packaged app version matches its release tag (#330)
  • Keep the installer filename stable as TryOmarchy.dmg for older update checkers and existing download links

Dev

  • Refresh the ARM64 package lock and pinned build inputs for the current factory, including the Japanese input stack and validated Hyprland build (#341, #350, #355)

New Contributors 🎉

New language defaults, Korean input setup, the login-screen theme, and About/screensaver branding require a new or reset VM. See Japanese input setup and recovery for preserved personal settings or deferred installation.

Compatible with Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 15 or newer.

  • Let Omarchy follow the Mac's time zone through Same as macOS in setup and the time-zone menu, or keep a fixed zone (#290, #299)
  • Configure maximum disk size alongside CPU and RAM, with a 64 GiB default for new settings. Mac storage used only as needed (#246, #296)
  • Skip the launcher and start straight into Omarchy, then reopen Try Omarchy Settings from inside Omarchy. Pause automatic startup for the first VM-update review (#152, #296, #309, #310, #317)
  • Review supported updates before an old VM's first launch with the new app, then choose to update or skip. Preserve your files while applying compatible updates. Still not a full migration path (#193, #308, #317)
  • Show the correct installed Mac app version and add Check for Updatesâ€Ķ. Daily startup checks are enabled by default, can be turned off in the settings (#234, #223, #309)

  • Faster factory resets, with visible progress and clearer confirmation. Fresh VM preparation happens on the next launch and uses less duplicate factory-image storage (#247, #307)
  • Hardware-accelerated Alacritty while retaining macOS 15 support (#176, #242)
  • Improve graphics responsiveness and frame pacing (#197)

Fixes

  • Fix older VMs failing to start after an app upgrade during one-time boot-file preparation (#237)
  • Fix intermittent first-launch failures reporting that safe Mac sleep could not be enabled, with clearer recovery actions and easier retries (#229, #296)
  • Fix a VM startup crash reported on M4 Macs running macOS 26.3 (#277)
  • Reduce audio dropouts during graphics-heavy activity (#254)
  • Address audio playing too fast with some Mac audio devices. Device or sample-rate changes during a session may still require a VM restart (#283)
  • Protect shared Mac folders from a write-caching issue that could corrupt files, including on older VM disks (#287)
  • Fix Command-Space unexpectedly opening Spotlight or Siri instead of reaching Omarchy (#226)

  • Fix browser-detection crashes caused by missing manual-page support (#225)
  • Fix large clipboard selections blocking clipboard sharing (#302)
  • Keep the screensaver working in small VM windows (#301)
  • Retain VM-update results in the selected workspace, show completion or failure in a dialog, and keep manual retries available (#317)

Dev

  • Faster tests and PR checks, with full test and build coverage on macOS 15 and 26 (#282)
  • More reliable builds on memory-constrained systems (#271)
  • Make new releases with build and tags in a single make release command (#318)

New Contributors 🎉

Update and Launch applies supported repairs to compatible existing disks, while keeping customized changes. Back up anything you need before resetting. It does not upgrade Linux packages, replace the kernel, enable Touch ID, or reproduce every change in the bundled image. The bundled Omarchy 4.0.4 image and other factory-only changes require a new or reset disk.

Compatible with Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 15 or newer.
