I kinda like this...

So much talk about this Elf on the Shelf lately had me thinking...and since our Christmas is centered on the birth of Jesus and not a guy in a red suit, I just loved this blog post I fell upon:

An alternative to Elf on the Shelf...Now THIS I like

No excuses

I haven't blogged for the past several months because I've been adjusting to our new family dynamics. Following a fall that landed her in the hospital for a week, my mom came to live with us temporarily. Over time, a diagnosis of seizures made it clear that at 83, she could no longer live on her own, and therefore, we hope to add a very small addition to the house to allow her to have some living space to augment the bedroom (formerly known as ours) she's using.

Many, many doctor's visits, hospital stays, in-home nursing visits, PT & OT appointments, adjustments for the kids AND adults, and lots of self-education have absorbed alot of my time.  Most of my online time has been spent researching seizures and dementia or playing mindless facebook games. Taking the time each day to compose & edit a blog post just didn't make the cut, and thus, once again, I went AWOL.

So that's my story. Can't promise I'll post regularly, but at least there's this...for now...

Timing

As you may or may not have noticed, I have been on an unannounced hiatus from blogging. I didn't plan it, I didn't intend to, I wasn't even prepared. It just happened. Things around here had just been a bit off-whack, and I lacked the time or desire to blog.  Each day I thought about a new post, but that's as far as it go. Thoughts. Twice I did post Wordless Wednesday entries, but then again, that didn't really count.

Normally by 9:00 I've either posted or prepared a post, but the last few weeks, I'd think about it, dismiss it, and get busy with what needed to be done. Today I actually didn't even think about posting. School, housework, all the good stuff. Then I sat down to read for a bit while the boys ate lunch and came across this post on Manna for Moms and suddenly, I felt alot better about things:

Soundtracks

Sometimes, I wonder which memories will stand out when I look back on this time in my life.  When my children are grown and gone, what will I remember from the days when they were young?

I was wondering about that not too long ago.  It was a day when everything was going right.  My heart overflowed with gratitude to God for the four precious gifts He’s given me, and with love for my children.  As I watched them play, the thought hit me, as it has before, that one day, these days are going to be gone.  One day, my children will be older, and these wonderful, magical years will have flown by.

Oh, I’ll admit there are days that seem far less magical than others.  But right now, there is exquisite joy in watching them play, in seeing them run around the house, in hearing their childish requests, in being needed.  My heart hurt at the realization that one day, I will no longer be able to cuddle them the same way I do now.  I won’t see them running through my home, smiling and carefree, making their own endless entertainment.  Everything will be different, and though I know that in some ways things will be even better, I also know that I will miss these times we have together now.

What will I miss most when I think back? I wondered, and the answer came: their laughter.  I’ve heard their laughter so many times, and it has come to mean so much to me, that I can’t imagine being without it.

When the kids were smaller, I used to make it my goal to make them giggle wildly at least once a day, because kids deserve to be able to laugh like that.  We still laugh together every day.  We play games together, and we tickle each other.  We tell jokes, and we share funny stories and discoveries.  All of these are occasions for laughter.  Sometimes, we laugh for no reason at all except delight in something, or in just being together.

Yes, there are times when the sounds in our home are not so pleasant.  If you could listen to us, you would sometimes hear harsh words, anger, or frustration.  But most often, you would hear laughter.

For our home, and hopefully for yours, laughter is like the soundtrack of a movie.  When you’re watching a movie, you don’t usually notice the music because you’re paying more attention to the action.  Laughter is like that.  It plays unobtrusively in the background.  It’s not as noticeable as the jarring notes of anger and disobedience, despite the fact that the latter make up only a few measures of the entire score.

At least, it should be that way.  If it isn’t—if the dissonant, inharmonious notes comprise the main soundtrack, with the laughter making up only brief interludes—do something about that now, before intermission, or worse, before the end of the piece.  You can change the composition in the middle.  Turn it into a beautiful symphony that blesses you and all those around you.

But stop and listen a minute.  Is that laughter you hear, playing in the background of your family’s life?  Is your soundtrack already beautiful, even if you haven’t noticed?  If so, praise God for its beauty.  Thank Him for the laughter and the sounds of love and joy that you regularly hear around your home.  Learn to listen for the sweet notes more than you do to the strident ones.

What do you hear in the soundtrack of your home?

Part of what you hear depends on the melodies the Composer has woven into His masterpiece.  But part of it also depends on what you’ve learned to hear.

I pray you hear laughter.

Psalm 126:2—Our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy. Then it was said among the nations, "The LORD has done great things for them."

I enjoyed reading it SO much, it just may have put me back into this bloggin' thing!

Significant, because

WORDLESS WEDNESDAY

Friday, September 16, 2011

A cool, crisp late summer morning..

...is all it takes sometimes to indicate two unmistakable facts:

1. My child has grown over the summer, and,
2. I will be shopping for new jeans for him very, very soon.

What do I look like, a walking version of Wiki?

Living in a house with two very curious boys with analytically inclined minds, I spend a good chunk of my day fielding questions. Sometimes, really off the wall questions. Used to be they were pretty easy to answer. As they get older however, and their questions become more complex, I find myself spending more and more time online. Binging. As in, scurrying to find answers via Bing, before they discover their mother does not in fact, know everything.

In the last 24 hours I've been asked, in particular order:
What's does flout mean?

Is a mourning dove really a dove?

Do you think Noah sent a mourning dove or a regular dove to check for dry land?

How old are squirrels when they have baby squirrels?

How long did it take Mary and Joseph to get to Bethlehem from Nazareth?

What color is the sun?

Have YOU ever seen a sarcophagus?

Who invented the Internet?

If the Upper Delta is south and the Lower Delta is north, were the Egyptians confused about east and west too?

How many days old will I be when I'm 21?

When birds migrate south, do they stop to sleep?

Why are they called fruit flies and how long does a fruit fly live?

How many earths would fit inside the sun?

What are fingernails made out of?

How big can a rat get?

Could somebody drink too much water?

Do your eyes grow when you get bigger?

Seriously. Sarcophagus? I had never heard the word before, let alone, know how to spell it, or know what it meant.  I am the only parent who feels more than a bit uninformed when their kids ask these types of questions?  If not, what are YOUR kids asking these days?

Life's little rewards

Who said hard work doesn't pay? Well whoever it was, was wrong. Why? Well take a look at the reward that comes from a week's worth of laundry duty:

Yup,  more than enough money. Just as soon as I'm done with home school for Skip, I'm gonna hop in the shower and then hop in the van and drive here:

And then, I'm gonna order me one of these:

And then, I'm gonna sit in the parking lot and sip it V-E-R-Y S-L-O-W-L-Y. Trust me, I earned it this week!

I'm using a great Language Arts book with Harry this year, entitled Language Lessons for the Very Young. As the cover says, "It's Charlotte Mason flavor for beginning students". Since the one area Harry seems to struggle with is expressive Language, this book is PERFECT for him.

A few days ago he had to list all the members in his family using their first and last names, with emphasis on using capital letters to begin each name.  That went fairly well. Today, Harry had a hard time settling down to do his work. He is almost always this way after a long weekend, and after a particularly excitable day or event.  He continues to struggle with Sensory overload issues, and while it's much better than when he first came home, it is still very much there.  Anyway, today was not going well for him and as the morning went on, things began to go downhill.  The scowl tells it all:

Fact is he just did not want to be doing schoolwork. When  I finally felt that he was fairly "focused" and somewhat compliant I gave him the next Language assignment which said he was to write a short paragraph about his family.  I left to go do something for no more than two minutes and when I returned he had written one sentence.  See for yourself what he came up with:

I wasn't sure WHAT to think, so I asked him to read to me, what he had written. Puzzled, (as if he couldn't fathom that his mother couldn't read for herself, the four word sentence he had just written) he said "Judy Holmes is tired."  Initial relief on my part, but then I began to contemplate.  I mean really, I'm not sure which concept disturbs me more - the fact that I'm a turd or that the best thing he can come up with is that I'm tired. I still haven't decided. May need another cup of coffee and a few minutes to try and figure this one out. Definitely going for the caffeinated...apparently I need it. At least in Harry's eyes.

Oh yeah, and when I asked him why he wrote my name and not Mom, he said it was because the last time I told him to write my FULL name.  I guess THAT part makes sense. In a Harry sorta way :)

So what do I know?

Do you remember this post from a few months back? Back then Skip was obsessed with catching a bird so he could see for himself how a bird's wings allow him to fly.  After repeated attempts at catching one with a net failed, he took the advice of a neighbor and set up a "trap" to catch one.  Eventually his efforts waned, but he never gave up hope completely, and on occasion, he would be spotted romping around the yard with the net in his hands, in pursuit of one bird or another.  But this week things changed.

Part of preparing  for Hurricane Irene included removing all our bird feeders from the front yard. Not wanting the birds to go without seed completely, we decided to sprinkle seeds around the tree and the walkway until the feeders could go back up. Skip decided to make that his job, and every morning after he went out to feed the koi, he'd spread some seeds for the birds. Even though the feeders went up a few days later, he continued to spread seeds for them. Then he noticed how many birds were actually being attracted. His mind worked overtime (as it normally does), and as a result, yesterday he constructed his trap again. This time in the front yard. He put a whole bunch of seeds out there, and he and Harry sat inside, "hidden" behind the full glass storm door, string in hand, ready to pull.  I felt it my duty to advise him (as I did back in June) that his chance of catching a bird in this manner were pretty slim, but that if he he did succeed, he'd have to let it go within a few minutes.  He agreed and I felt I had done my job.

Well what do I know?  After about an hour of waiting, and groans over near hits, he DID catch one! A poor unsuspecting mourning dove.

He excitedly checked out the bird...
posed for a picture or two,
said good-bye and slowly lifted the "trap",
then watched him fly away.
Encouraged by his feat, he decided to set it up again and see if he could catch another.  Shortly thereafter, Mike called the boys to the table for lunch, and the trap was left unattended. End of story?

Nope. You see, apparently I am not the only one who was impressed by his diligence and surprised that he had succeeded because while the boys were sitting at the table enjoying peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, somebody else was trying his hand at it...

Sorry to say, no luck. But, if he's anything like his son, he won't give up too easily!

Thursday's "Then & Now"

Someone has a birthday today!

Dear Harry,

In 2005, our friend Irina visited you in at the Baby Home in Angarsk, because we couldn't be there with you.  She brought you this cute little outfit you're wearing in the picture, as well a few little toys.  She stayed and played with you and brought some treats for you and your group mates to share, in celebration of your first birthday. She sent us a special email after her visit and attached several pictures of you. Those pictures were and are very special to us! She also let us know how big you'd gotten, what your favorite activities were, and that you'd recently started walking. We missed you very much, and were so blessed to have Irina in our lives. Each night we prayed  that God would soften the Judge's heart so she would let you come home to your family.

Today, you will be celebrate your 7th birthday! Look how you've grown!  We are spending this weekend on the boat and have some special surprises waiting for you!  You're a handful at times, in perpetual motion, and (usually) keep us laughing with your antics. We hope you know how much we love you, and pray that as you continue to grow you will look to God each day and understand how very much HE loves you too!

Love, Mommy & Poppa

Happy Birthday Harry!

Can't believe my "baby" is now 7!

All is calm. All is bright. (2 days post T.S. Irene)

Wordless Wednesday

Tuesday, August 30, 2011

I'm on a roll here...More top tens..

Top ten reasons I'm thankful today:

1)  Hurricane Irene was downgraded to TS Irene before it reached us yesterday, and damage was no where near what it could have been. One fallen tree, a yard full of twigs and branches but nothing big!

2)  Not one of ounce of ice cream went to waste while our freezer warmed up a bit during all the on again/off again electricity mess.  All THREE 1/2 gallons were consumed. 'Nuf said.

3)  The 90-minute workout I received while clearing out the branches, twigs, leaves, etc. from the front yard, driveway and front walkway was more beneficial than a trip to the gym!

4)  I didn't need to use the helmets we had handy in case there was a tornado warning!

5)  The dog survived the howling wind without any extra prozac.

6)  The frame that held the deck canopy (which was ripped to shreds during the storm) continues to serve a purpose. I can now put all my hanging laundry out to dry at one time!

7)  I only had to wake Mike up once Sunday night (ya know, by kicking him, like I do when he's snoring) to get him to refill the generator, since power was restored before midnight.

8)  All four guys pitched in and got the entire yard cleaned up my mid-afternoon yesterday.

9)  I didn't hear one, single, "I'm bored" all day yesterday!

10)  It appears the boat will go back in the water today and instead of the 8 day end-of-season boat trip we were supposed to take beginning yesterday, we'll salvage a 4/5 day long weekend after all.

Yup, life is good.

In Letterman style

the Top Ten Things I did during yesterdays Hurricane-turned -Tropical Storm Irene and the on again off again power loss:

10)  Cooked breakfast on the barbecue grill - sausage gravy & toast.  Not the best I've made or eaten, but surely the most memorable.
9)  Ate ice cream for lunch.  Some of us here had it for morning snack, lunch, afternoon snack, second dinner (after the beef stew I managed to pull off between power outages) and then bedtime snack. The good thing is not an ounce of ice cream was wasted. Harry did go to bed with a stomach ache however.
8)  Attempted to turn the bathroom light on approximately 17 times.
7)  Explained to my boys at least 25 times why they could NOT go outside and run around in the wind.
6)  Played board games. Lots of board games. Chinese Checkers, Monopoly Deal, Canasta, Memory, S'math and a bunch of others that now seem to blend together in my brain.
5)  Took a zillion pictures of the three hummingbirds who bravely fought the wind and rain to reach the feeder and then feast on the nectar, endlessly.
4)  Watched the three squirrels who took up temporary shelter under the cars we parked on the front lawn so they wouldn't get pelted with falling tree limbs in the driveway. The cars provided easy access to the bird seed that was spewed around the front yard when we emptied the feeders before safely storing them for the duration of the storm.
3)  Enjoyed an extra long version of devotions with the family.  The story of Creation. I was kinda thinking Noah & the Ark might have been more appropriate, but...
2)  Obsessed over a Dunkin' Donuts Mocha Latte.  "No sugar, skim milk, please".  In my fantasy, it was the best iced latte. Ever.

And, the number one thing I did during yesterday's storm,

was, {{{insert music here}}}

Shamelessly gave my boys the "when I was a kid we didn't even have cable television, Wii, OR computers so you'll survive this little inconvenience" one too many times than I dare admit.

Preparing for Irene

Everyone has their own emergency preparedness list, and we of course are no exception. With Hurricane Irene expected to arrive here early tomorrow morning, we spent most of the day working on our list, which included:

Get the boat out of the water
and into the Boat Yard

Assemble emergency kit: flashlights, battery-operated
clock, converter, and helmets (in case of tornado)

Cook up a giant pan of pasta sauce with the
vegetables and spices we harvested

Clean gutters

Clear the back yard of tools and toys
Tie down what can't be stored in the sheds or indoors.
Lower the level of the pond 8-10" in case of flooding.
Wouldn't want to have Koi flopping around in the front yard.

flip the glass-topped deck table and tie it to the rail

And finally, purchase slice and bake cookie dough...because one can  never have enough, of course.
