unbagrnd is a free, open-source AI background remover that processes images locally on Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android. It uses computer vision segmentation models through ONNX Runtime to create transparent cutouts without uploading your images to a cloud service.
You can process a single image or a batch, choose from six background-removal models, repair difficult edges with erase and restore brushes, edit the background, and export the result as PNG, WebP, or SVG. Internet access is required when a model downloads for the first time. Later processing uses the cached model locally with no account and API key required.
How Local Background Removal Works
unbagrnd passes the selected image to its Rust backend for decoding and preprocessing. ONNX Runtime runs the selected segmentation model locally and converts its prediction into the alpha mask used for the transparent cutout.
Each model downloads the first time you select it. unbagrnd verifies the downloaded file with a SHA-256 checksum and stores it in the local app-data directory. Future processing uses the cached copy.
Available Background-Removal Models
unbagrnd currently includes six selectable models. Silueta is the default model and has the smallest download at about 44 MB.
| Model | Intended Image Type | Approx. Download |
|---|---|---|
| Silueta | Fast general-purpose background removal | 44 MB |
| U2-Net | General images with higher detail | 176 MB |
| BiRefNet General Lite | General images, fine edges, and hair detail | 224 MB |
| U2-Net Human | Portraits and people | 176 MB |
| U2-Net Cloth | Clothing and garment regions | 176 MB |
| IS-Net Anime | Anime and illustrated characters | 176 MB |
Single Images, Batch Jobs, and Manual Cleanup
For a single image, select a file and run background removal. unbagrnd displays the original image and processed cutout for review.
Batch processing handles multiple files and desktop image folders. Each processed image receives its own result entry, which is useful for product photos, profile images, design assets, and other repeated cutout jobs.
The Refine editor provides erase and restore brushes for correcting the generated mask. Undo and redo controls let you return to earlier editing states when an edge needs several adjustments.
The Background editor can replace transparency with a solid color and apply an on-device drop shadow.
PNG, WebP, and SVG Export
unbagrnd exports processed images as PNG, WebP, or SVG.
PNG and WebP can preserve transparency. SVG export places the processed raster image inside an SVG document. It does not convert the subject into editable vector geometry, curves, or nodes.
Installation and First Use
Download the current release package for your platform from GitHub Releases.
- macOS: DMG for Apple Silicon
- Windows: MSI or EXE installer
- Linux: AppImage, DEB, or RPM package
- Android: Universal APK
Open unbagrnd and select an image. When the chosen model is not already stored on your device, the app downloads and verifies it before processing begins.
macOS Gatekeeper Warning
The macOS build is not code-signed or notarized. Gatekeeper can quarantine the downloaded application and report that it is damaged.
Move unbagrnd to Applications and run:
xattr -cr /Applications/unbagrnd.appPros

FAQs
Can I use unbagrnd for commercial work?
Yes. unbagrnd uses the MIT license. The current background-removal model weights use MIT or Apache licensing that permits personal and commercial use.
Does unbagrnd work offline?
Yes, after the selected model has been downloaded. Each model requires internet access once for its initial download. Later background-removal jobs use the cached model on your device.
Where does unbagrnd store downloaded models?
Downloaded models are stored in the app-data directory:
- macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/com.unbagrnd.app/ - Linux:
~/.local/share/com.unbagrnd.app/ - Windows:
%APPDATA%\com.unbagrnd.app\ - Android:
/data/user/0/com.unbagrnd.app/models/
What happens if a model download is corrupted?
unbagrnd calculates the SHA-256 checksum of each downloaded model before storing it as the finished model file. A checksum failure removes the incomplete file, and the model can be downloaded again.
