GitDiagram: Free AI GitHub Repo Visualizer & Architecture Diagram Tool

Turn a GitHub repository into an interactive architecture map, open source files from diagram nodes, and export the result as Mermaid or PNG.

GitDiagram is an open-source AI tool that turns public or private GitHub repositories into interactive architecture diagrams.

It analyzes repository structure and selected source code to map major components and relationships. Each diagram component links back to the relevant file or directory on GitHub.

Key Features

  • Generate system-level architecture diagrams from repository structure, README content, and sampled source code.
  • Open the related GitHub file or directory from each diagram component.
  • Watch the architecture overview and graph appear during generation.
  • Diagram private repositories with a fine-grained GitHub personal access token.
  • Copy Mermaid source or download the rendered diagram as PNG.
  • Run GitDiagram locally with OpenAI or OpenRouter.

Use Cases

  • Understand an unfamiliar codebase before reading individual files.
  • Map major components before onboarding or contributing to a repository.
  • Export architecture diagrams for project documentation and technical discussions.

How GitDiagram Works

GitDiagram fetches the repository’s default branch, recursive file tree, README, and a bounded selection of source excerpts through the GitHub API. It uses that input to build a graph of system components, relationships, labels, and repository paths.

The server validates graph identifiers, connectivity, size limits, and linked repository paths. The validated graph is compiled to Mermaid and rendered as an interactive diagram with GitHub source links.

How to Turn a GitHub Repo into a Diagram

1. Visit the GitDiagram website.

2. Paste a GitHub repository URL or enter it in owner/repo format.

3. Click Diagram to generate the architecture view.

4. For a faster shortcut, replace github.com with gitdiagram.com. For example, https://github.com/fastapi/fastapi becomes https://gitdiagram.com/fastapi/fastapi.

5. Click diagram components to open the related files or directories on GitHub.

    Using GitDiagram with Private Repositories

Select Private Repos in the GitDiagram header and provide a fine-grained GitHub personal access token that can read the repository. GitDiagram sends the token only with the relevant request.

    Exporting a Diagram

Generated diagrams include controls for copying the Mermaid source or downloading the rendered diagram as a PNG.

Mermaid source can be edited or embedded in Mermaid-compatible documentation, and PNG export provides a static image for documentation or presentations.

    Self-Hosting GitDiagram

GitDiagram can run locally from its GitHub repository.

Local development uses Bun and requires Cloudflare R2, Upstash Redis, and one AI provider in .env. OpenAI is the default provider, and OpenRouter is available through AI_PROVIDER.

A GitHub PAT or GitHub App is optional for public repositories and provides higher GitHub API limits.
