A family facing foreclosure is anything but a unique story in these troubled economic times. "It's a personal miracle," she says of how their home was saved.

But this is a happier story of one family whose financial ruin was averted by the actions of a friend, the compassion of strangers, the networking power of the Internet and the holiday spirit of giving.

"This is our Christmas story," said Ebony Sampson. "It's going to be told for generations and generations to come."

Sampson, who lives in Aberdeen, Maryland, with her husband, Daniel, and their two young children, has overcome more hardship than one person should ever have to face. When she was in the 10th grade, she lost her entire family in a horrific car accident. Raised by a grandmother in New York, Ebony eventually used some life-insurance money from her parents' death to buy the home in Aberdeen, near where she grew up.

But in June, Daniel got sick. After several tests, his doctors concluded that he was suffering from salmonella after eating a tainted tomato. As a new employee of Bank of America, he had not accrued enough paid time off to keep his job as a credit-card account manager. Video Watch how the Sampsons' home was saved »

Suddenly, the sole breadwinner in the Sampson household was out of work. Though the Sampsons received unemployment checks from the government, the money wasn't enough to make ends meet.

First came the shut-off notices from the electric company. Then one of their cars broke down. One morning, Daniel woke up and looked out his bedroom window and saw his truck was missing. It had been repossessed.

With no job, no car and no income, the Sampsons got another surprise: Ebony Sampson learned she was eight weeks pregnant.

The Sampsons returned home from church, where they are practicing ministers, on a Sunday in November to find a stranger knocking on their front door. He wanted to put a bid in on their house. Ebony told him their home was not for sale. The next day, the Sampsons were notified that they were facing foreclosure unless they could come up with $10,000 in the next two weeks to bring their mortgage up to date.

"Once we received that letter, it was like, 'Oh my God, what are we going to do?' " Daniel Sampson said. "I don't think anyone in their right mind would receive a foreclosure notice and not be rattled by it."

Somehow, the couple maintained their sense of humor. Ebony Sampson called one of her oldest friends, Jaki Grier, and jokingly asked her if she had $10,000. Jaki told her, "Sure, just let me open up my invisible purse!"

But then Grier got an idea.

A self-described geek, Grier started blogging years ago. Since then, she's contributed to a magazine's Web site and regularly posts thoughts and life happenings on her LiveJournal page. So, she published Ebony and Daniel's story, along with a link where people could make a donation.

At the most, Jaki thought she could raise enough money to help the Sampsons pay a security deposit on an apartment after their home was auctioned.

But donations started pouring in. Within 24 hours, Grier's blog had raised $1,000, far exceeding her expectations. People started linking to Grier's blog from sites across the Internet and around the country.

Attorneys posted legal advice. Others in similar situations offered sympathy. One woman sent a donation with a note that said she had just lost her own home but wanted to help anyway. Another woman wrote that she didn't have a car but would walk to her grocery store with a jar of change and donate it to the cause.

Yet another e-mail came from a woman who was unemployed, with no job prospects. She donated a dollar.

With every donation, the total raised ticked higher and higher on Grier's blog.

"Everybody wants to give to a charity, but so many times when you give to a charity you don't really see where your money goes," Grier said. "At least with this, you saw the little [donations] ticker go. I think that made people excited."

Four days after Grier's blog post, she had raised $3,400 -- enough to repair the Sampsons' car. That night, Grier went to bed ecstatic. The next morning she checked her PayPal account and was stunned to find the balance had ballooned to $10,900.

In the time it took Grier to take the donation link down from her blog, the balance had reached $11,032. In just five days, she had raised enough money to save her friend's home. A Baltimore TV station, WBAL, caught wind of the story and put it on the air. Someone contacted Daniel Sampson and offered him a job interview.

"It's been overwhelming," Daniel Sampson said. "For me, out of all the donations [we] received, it was a little kid [who] came knocking on the door early Saturday morning ... with a five-dollar bill in his hand. He just came up to the door and said, 'Here you go, mister.' Then he just walked away. I was, like, speechless. He couldn't have been more than 8 years old."

Now Daniel and Ebony Sampson will be able to enjoy Christmas much more than they thought they would just a few weeks ago. They say that once their children are grown, they'll tell them the story of how one holiday season they came within days of losing their house. They'll spend this Christmas full of thanks.

"It doesn't seem real to me, and so I just thank everyone out there that cares," Ebony Sampson said. "There really was no hope for us. Then, out of nowhere, just the kindness of strangers, just people that came and, you know, provided for us. Jaki was our beacon of light that led them to us.

"It's a personal blessing. It's a personal miracle. It makes you understand what the season is all about."

Man on man, where does time go? I can't believe its the end of summer already!

Becca goes back Full Time to school on the 15th and I am sad. I really enjoyed having her home two days a week. We could keep her home longer but she really needs to get back to full time - consistency in routine, we found out, really works best for her. She's done remarkably well lately and we are so proud of her. Her language skills have exploded and she's talking non-stop from the minute she wakes to the
second she lays her head down at night. Its exhausting but fun too :D

Michael is also doing really great. He's 6 1/2 months now and he has his bottom two teeth and sits up unsupported. He eats A LOT - like 10-12 tablespoon of food a day and nurses every 3-4 hours. He's 18lbs and almost 29inches long. He's a big boy :D

Rob is also doing great! He scored two tickets for this year's TIFF for Zack and Miri make a Porno. I need to cement some babysitting in order to go though so we're gonna look into it this weekend. Work is work for him and he's still doing his weekly ROR show. I love the fact that he does this for himself. We all need a hobby and he loves getting together with the boys and talk shit out that they would never normally talk about ;)

As for me, I'm great :D Good place to be at and just going through the motions. Getting ready for the fall means thinking wardrobe issues and planning on some thrift shopping. A new Winners opened up here in Milton so I'll be checking that out. Also the summer sales are on so I need to stock on stuff for next summer.

What's new with you guys?? ;)

Btw - I had some other idea for this post - but I lost the rhythm when Rob called about the TIFF tickets ;)

I was unsure how to start or even if we would know what to look for when it was time to start potty training Rebecca. It seems that she was the one to tell us. With a few tips from the Huggies Princess Potty Training kit that Rob picked up last year, and Becca's willingness to start, it seems that this training business should be a breeze (knock on wood)..

Becca's been home since Thursday with the runs, so we've been chilling and I've been watching for cues from her if she needed to go potty. On Friday afternoon, she saw the Princess kit and that's when she wanted to put the Princess panties on. After taking out the special Crown and explaining that she only got to wear it when she went potty, and that there were special stickers for each time she went, there was no going back ;)

Saturday morning, she went #2 with no problems, but she had pee accidents the rest of the day. Of course you get a bit discouraged at this point since you assume that #1 would be easier than #2, but it seems that my little girl wanted to prove the stats wrong ;)

This morning she went #1 and just now, before nap, she told Daddy that she needed to go potty and went #1 and #2 with no problems!! When Daddy exclaimed "Good Girl Becca!!", she shushed him :D LOL I was feeding Michael in his room while this was going on and heard the shushing and laughed hard!

Let's hope this continues on this week while she's at daycare!!

CURS!

Have you ever done a random act of kindness for a stranger? or ever been on the receiving end of such an action?

After dropping off a much healthier - and cheekier - little girl at school, I went to my local Tim Hortons to get some much needed coffee and a danish. While waiting in line in the drive-thru I noticed the Rav4 in front of me and was trying to read the design logo that was advertising a kids play company. Since it's still early, and the brain isn't functioning yet for lack of caffeine, I really wasn't paying that close attention, only that they bought the MPV at the Milton Toyota dealership.

I pull up to the window to pay for my purchase and the lady said that this was covered. Huh? She was laughing and was really amused, but said that my coffee and danish were already paid for by the person that had just left.

Man, I mean WOW! Really unexpected and so much appreciated!!

I pulled off from the window and searched in vain for the truck, but it was gone.

So, whoever you are, THANK YOU! You really made my year.

While driving home and trying to think about what just happened, it dawned on me to really think, what have I done to make someone's day like this before? A smile? Helping holding the door open for the person behind me? What lesson does this teach me, and one day teach my children?

Again, I ask, have you ever done a random act of kindness to a stranger? Or have you ever been on the receiving end one? Can you let me know?

Thanks!

Today started off great - Rebecca was in a good mood, wanted to cuddle first thing upon waking up (which is ALWAYS a great way to start my day :D) and dropped her off at school. One of the new boys was a bit weepy so Rebecca became so as well... but was soon distracted enough by her teacher that I made my escape practically unscathed :P

When she came home however, things unraveled quite quickly. She was great in the car - even better when she got in the house. But not 15 minutes later, she threw up.. and in a matter of almost 5 hours, she's thrown up 8 times. I called Telehealth Ontario (1-866-797-000 for those of you who don't have it) and the nurse basically walked me through all the possible 'bad' symptoms that she could be experiencing (stiff neck, headache, lethargy, etc.) but it seemed that as soon as she sicked up she was fine. She even warned us twice that she needed to be sick and either walked over to the ceramic floor (rather than sicking on the carpet) or we went to the bathroom and she sicked in the tub. I made a big deal about how good she was and told her that it was OK to sick and we said goodbye to it. Man, the things we do as parents ;)

So Rob's finished steam cleaning the carpet and I've finally managed to get Rebecca to sleep (with lots of towels as protection) and finishing laundry (she's gone through 8 changes and all her PJs :P)

I think its going to be a long night :P

Rebecca is home today due to having a mild case of Croup.. sucks because all she does is bark/cough and she has had some issues breathing - we spent the morning yesterday in the ER because of it - but the Dr is OK with her chest now so all we can do now is wait it out.

Dora has now become my nemesis.. God, I hate this show.. but Becca is just loving it. Its on now and she's just enthralled with it. Funny thing is now, she actually is starting to respond to the prompts (Say "Map", Stomp like a dinosaur, Now roar "ROARRRR" that's her favorite ;)). She just threw her hands in the air when told and said "Hill". Too damn cute:)

I may have mentioned it in Bob's journal, we're expecting our second little one.. Due in Feb, but most likely will show up earlier.. Rebecca was early, and since we're talking 2 1/2 years between the two, we're going to be expecting a similar - if not faster - delivery. That means I'm going to have to be close to a hospital by week 30.. ;)

So, yeah, that's about all that's happening ;)

xoxo
