I don't use subjects often. I'm proud of this one.
So, work again. Stress level is way down doing just organizational stuff. Could I be making more with commission - maybe. Likely. The problem? I should be making more anyway. After the store manager told me last Friday that he was looking into my questions, I went to see him on Tuesday. He wanted to wait until he had more to go on because he didn't want to talk to me without having facts. Well, all he showed me Tuesday was that he thought I should have had a pay raise twice since 2008. I never thought about it, because I had a couple due to minimum wage going up, a normal raise, plus my small raise after I was with the company for a year. Then in 2009 there was a salary freeze. So I'm not sure what he was going on, but he showed me where he thought I should've gotten raises and how much.
It wasn't as much as I had hoped - I thought my "benefit pay" after I left commission would be the average of what I had been making. A couple girls in my dept. are at 9.90 and 10.05/hour. My last five checks averaged 10.33 - I didn't think I'd be anywhere near that, but I figured maybe at least $9 or so. Apparently I should have gone to 8.54 or something - all the way back in 2008. That confuses me because of the raises I did get; I wish he would have given me a copy of the little chart he showed me. He also said he wasn't sure if the company would give me any reimbursement, even for just the 160+ hours I've worked since leaving the commission rate. It's funny, they have no problem giving people discounts who don't have coupons, letting customers get money back for things obviously washed, worn and seemingly donated to the homeless and stolen back, all to keep business. Yet I'm sure because I'm in a different situation where the store I worked at for over 2 years shut down and I changed positions, I'm just going to get a raise I should've got two years ago. That's what really upset me. He was maybe too honest. He could have just said he was working on getting me a raise, but to now know that according to him, I lost out on about $700 last year and about $90 in January before my store closed kinda sucks.
At the very least, I believe he did say he was going to put in an immediate request for me to go up to 8.54 or whatever, which is nice. But I got my hopes up, which I shouldn't have. I was hoping to get a bonus check before Christmas. Oh well. Gotta appreciate what I do have. I sure don't want 2006 to happen all over again.
Totally abandoned this site! Seems most people have, my friends feed on livejournal is basically just Barbara's Blog (haha, love ya Barb!). I think I made a post awhile back about how many of my friends on here were active. I wonder what that list would look like now.
I always want to write something in here, but there's nothing going on. I'm starting to work a bit more. I only worked TEN days and 56 hours in October. Our department just has too many people. I talked to the store manager about getting away from selling and commission. The only motivation I have to rush around dealing with more people is a few more bucks a day, and it wasn't worth it to me. One girl that's always one of our top sellers can easily do 1500 a day and get an extra $5.50 an hour or whatever, but I get too frustrated. I always just want to pick up papers and put things away. So now I get to do that. Yesterday, I spent most of my 6 hour shift just re-organizing a whole section of the stock room; it was glorious!
The bad part is that I don't think I'll make as much as I thought. A lot of people talked about benefit pay and how it was an average of what a commission worker had made. However, rather than the average (which over my last 5 paychecks would have been $10.33/hour) I am back to what I made when my old store closed, which is $7.92. Which is like minimum wage of $7.40 plus selling about ... well, have a really bad sales day. But I'm getting more hours so I may just end up ahead of the game anyway. I'm hoping they adjust my rate - I was only making commission for 9 months, but that's not my fault. My old store wasn't commission based. Heck, screw $10.33, I'd be happy with $8.25 or something, considering the company had a salary freeze last year, and this year I got put in commission so I didn't get an annual raise. These aren't really things I could control, and I would assume most people who have been with any company for three years make more than 50 cents above minimum wage.
HOWEVER I am getting more hours, at least right now, and the stress of selling will be limited to just doing register work on weekends. So, we'll see. "At least I have a job," right? I hate that phrase but I do know it's tough to get one, even outside of this state. Ok, that's enough for now.
Nice title, huh? Too bad I just realized today is actually Sunday. Fuck it.
I once started a TV blog to try and write more, and I'd recap episodes I watched, then before the crazy assload of TV that was on Monday nights, I'd have a little rambling party in my own head (and thus, on Blogger.com). I didn't keep up with it really.
Blogs are strange. They have taken over what people see as a "website." It used to be Angelfire, Tripod and ThatOtherHost bio pages with glittery rainbows and animated dogs. Now, I guess the internet has "grown up" a bit, though you wouldn't know it from 90% of its users. Nobody has a website anymore, they have a blog to go along with all of the social networking sites and smaller sites like tumblr and dailybooth where they want followers. God, how well did those take off? I think Twitter is still one of the simplest, but each one seems to start out like a nice new place to waste 5 minutes. Not for long. Every site has to catch up to the others and try to find that one feature that will take them over the top. But folks, IT'S THE INTERNET. Srsly, as they say, most of these sites are free, so you're not exactly peddling to the main consumers when you try to advance your business. When I remember to come to LJ, I see I have new messages, and they are always from the LJ people telling us what new things they are doing. Why change so much?
Speaking of business. Here's a segue.
I went from making $75 per game with the Tigers to making $11/hour and working maybe 2 or 3 games per homestand. So, if the Tigers were at home for 9 games, compare $675.00 to maybe $121.00 if I work 11 hours in two days. Ouch. I collected unemployment from January-May, so I can probably file an additional claim for this benefit year and make up some of that loss on weeks I don't make much. I don't feel I'm cheating the system or anything with that kind of monetary loss, right? I did lose a job, technically. I'm still employed by them, but far less.
I've had a headache much of the day today. Work was slow and annoying, as two of my co-workers got into a heated yelling match. I get that, shit happens and emotions fly around, but the one girl left at 2 (the fight-starting event occurred around noon) and instead of just trying to let it go, the other woman stayed angry and ended up leaving work shortly after that, when she was supposed to be there until 5. I wonder if I can call in Monday and say "I'm upset, I don't want to work." I happen to like pretty much everyone I work with, but I can tell some of them do not get along with some others. It's just so petty sometimes. I really wonder if those two have past issues or if this event was THAT catastrophic.
So I've decided to write about my store's last two months of existence.
I don't know when it was built but it's been around since the 50s. I just learned about it back in 2007 when I worked for RGIS Inventory. My girlfriend at the time had to tell me where it was. "Right next to the Farmer Jack we go to!" Well Farmer Jack went out of business in July of that year. Anyway, I did the inventory for that store among other JCPenney locations and decided I would apply there. They hired me right away and I took it, even though I had an interview at the mall store.
So, the store closes on December 30, 2010. Which is Saturday of Week 52 of the fiscal year or whatever. Which makes sense to me, but others think they should have stayed open through the end of the lease, which I can't remember. April of either 2010 or 2011 I think.
It's funny, some employees predicted that the store would close when the lease was up because it was also around the time the manager of our store could retire.
Liquidation begins December 7, the typical eight weeks before closing. And I still don't know a damn thing. I thought hours would be cut, but I have 32 hours that week. I guess company sales/prices will be cut, but I have not heard if we are going to stop taking returns or stop getting new merchandise in, and I haven't heard about being transferred.
So I may use this space in the next two months to jot down anything, everything or absolutely nothing about work. haha. So be prepared.
One supervisor and four associates scheduled at work, two associates call off.
Yeah, you'd think they would learn not to schedule so few people. Luckily the economy is shit, so it wasn't too busy. But still, to try and help all the customers while keeping the store in ... tolerable condition is not possible with two workers.
So on Monday they wanted me to go in early, but I didn't. Today I stayed a half hour late. If they dock me a half hour for a lunch I didn't take, I'm gonna ... probably do nothing and just take it.
Back in 2007 I complained about having two days off out of 19. Well, so far I have worked every day since August 28 (13 days) and I'm scheduled tomorrow at JCP before seven games at Comerica (21). then the weekend at JCP (23 total in a row), and I finally just requested September 20 off. I'll probably be so bored.
The Tigers paid me for 4 games this past pay period when I worked five. But since I've already been paid for two games I didn't actually work (one rainout and one pay period where I just inexplicably got paid for 8 games instead of 7), I'm not going to ask for them to fix it. I figure this cancels out one of those, and I'm still ahead. I don't want to complain and have them go back and find out I owe them.
Triple cheese grilled cheese? Yeah, too much. But I only had three slices left and what was I going to do with one leftover slice of cheese besides eat it by itself, so it just went on the sandwich.
I've neglected this site. Facebook is easier, although there sometimes I'll think of things after the fact and can't edit, so I end up typing up a new "update" then I feel like I'm flooding people's pages.
So, in recent news, I'm not moving. I wrote an angry a letter about how I thought it was unfair to drop the list price $95 then ask me to pay $25 more than I was paying. Can you imagine that? I mean, I know it's a different animal, but what if Netflix offered a monthly plan for $5.99 but you were paying $11.99 and they raised your plan to 13.99?
So, I signed my renewal form for 12 months at the same rate I was paying. It's not $395, but it's also not $465 or even the $450 I'd pay at the other place. So I'm content. Now if I can just get the "award-winning maintenance team" to fix my shit.
I've worked 52 hours at JCP this month so far, and it'll top the 55.3 I worked last June (when I also worked 16 Tigers games compared to 12 this year). But July, holy crap. Last year I worked 110 hours! That's insane. I had one day off from July 14-24 last year. I don't expect to get that many hours this year, which is also why I didn't wanna move. No huge check right before my lease expires.
I have Monday off, and damn it, I need to go get my car worked on. Brakes, shocks, windshield, air conditioning - SOMETHING needs to get fixed because I've been really bad at keeping it up. If my car were a child, I'd be in jail or at least lose custody of it.
THE RED WINGS WANT ME TO WORK TOMORROW NIGHT'S GAME AND I CAN'T DO IT.
I want to cry.
I use this program called Deko at work with the Tigers. But all I do is update templates that were made years ago by someone else. So I really don't know how to create anything, or at least I haven't done that before. It's probably easy to do, but if they want me to go in and show them how to do it, they wouldn't get much out of me. It sucks, I've been waiting like five years to find out about working with the Wings.
- Someone called from DHL to ask about labels and bags to be sent to Comerica Park. I ordered labels last season but they ignored my changes and sent them with the wrong name on them (I gave an account number, maybe that's why). I don't think the guy who called me really cared about my info, and just kinda said "Ok well I'll send some just to be safe." I'll try to order correct ones in the next few weeks.
- Sarah texted me to ask if I worked tonight.
(I can't believe "texted" isn't in my spell-check dictionary by now.)
- She texted me again to ask when.
- Matt called me to ask if I would want to run Thunder on Thursday the 3rd and Friday the 4th. I've done Thunder for high school games, but never a major league game. I don't think I'd be comfortable enough to run it during Opening Week. Especially since I believe it's all new this year. Which might mean it'll be easier, but maybe if I learn it I can fill in another time.
So I ended up getting out of bed earlier than normal. I work later than normal, so I guess it's a good thing. I'm doing some laundry now.
I don't know for sure, and I don't really want to get my hopes up, but I think I'm getting a Christmas bonus from RGIS. The last employer I'd ever expect one from. But I opened my paystub email expecting all zeroes, and I see some kind of Hourly Bonus" and a net pay of $145.26.
It's not much, but about 145 times as much as I thought I was getting. Although you can't multiply 145 times zero, so I don't know how else to put that. I guess $145 more than zero.
Today is the last day of my six straight working at JCP. Friday and Saturday were insane - for anyone that didn't show up the day after Thanksgiving, they came in this past weekend for the "Huge Sale," which seemed a lot more busy than the "Biggest Sale of them All." Yes, they name their sales, and there's one every few days.
The goal for the weekend in our store was $45,000. I'm curious what we ended up with. I work in shoes now and I know I sold an assload. $20-60 a pair probably, nothing huge, but I know of at least two ladies who bought FIVE PAIR. Five Pairs?
I get Tuesday and Thursday off this week, and I'm working mostly eight hour shifts instead of my usual six. But since the store usually dies down around 8PM, I'm not expecting to see many people then.
Well, time to go buy some water and throat drops at the evil CVS before I start work.
was this the first hang out with Mary? hmm. Strange that I didn't put more emphasis on that but I guess I didn't know where it was going at that point.
