A quick fetch question.

Since he was a little puppy Kota's enjoyed chasing toys but he always ran off with them and chewed them in a corner rather than bringing them back.

( Cue cute photoCollapse )

After some work in my hallway with a clicker I finally got him bringing them back to me. Part-way. He drops them about 6ft away from me and I can't get him to bring them any closer. I ignore him and he picks it up and drops it and picks it up and drops it and picks it up and drops it and eventually it rolls close to me and I pick it up and throw it for him. He knows it's something about the picking it up and dropping it that gets him what he wants but he doesn't seem to be getting the hang of the fact that I want the ball close to me. Even marking the moment the ball gets close enough isn't helping.

Should I just perservere? Will he pick it up eventually? He loves playing fetch now (as long as Sparky's not playing too) and will follow me around with his ball bugging me for hours after I've thrown it for him.

Just a couple videos

They aren't the best quality because they were taken with my blackberry :P The first is of Thor, the yorkie... who says yorkies are just little yappy purse dogs! Thor is super yorkie and can do anything a big smart shepherd can do :P

And Gambit, the mini Aussie. I taught him to bow, his cue is you bowing to him, he'll bow back :) It made me happy to see him doing it with his owner! He's only six months old.

Teaching "get it"

As in, picking something off the floor and giving it to me.

I've been working on "bring it," but he won't do it consistently. And, forget about getting something off the floor unless it's food. We're also having a hard time learning "hold it." He'll "take it," but then he won't hold it, he'll just drop it. So, we have lots to work on...any tips?

I have the Teamwork II DVD, and have been trying to use some of the techniques mentioned in there, but it doesn't seem to be getting through. Help!

Fetch frustration

Okay, so overall Bensen's training is going pretty well, with one very frustrating exception. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, so I'll give you the back ground and hope that you all can point me in the right direction.
( Cut for lengthCollapse )
I don't know- should I change what we're training on for a while, and come back to this, when maybe he's forgotten that he can get the really good treats for this? Should I "bait and switch"? I hate the idea of tricking him into giving me the ball by promising a super yummy treat and then giving him a lesser treat, but I'm not sure if maybe I should do that. How do I get past this?

(no subject)

This is a very basic request. We haven't gone to any dog training yet.

I was trying to use the prompt "get it" so that my 5 year old dog friend would pick up her toy. I had a treat ready to reward her, but she just wouldn't do it. She tends to leave her toy out in the park, and expects me to go pick it up for her.

Sorry if this is too vague. Suggestions?

How do you teach "fetch"? (plus a happy side note on my quest to socialize Whisper)

Does any one know how you teach a dog to fetch? She's half border collie but has absolutely no interest whatsoever in balls, sticks or frisbees. She doesn't care for toys period. I just want to have a fun game to play with her and get her excersize at the same time. She loves to run. The only game we play is chase, and I know it's not the best game for a dog. For the record I wasn't the one that taught her. She has actually proven to be very good about only playing with me and not other people (or kids) who happen to run by her. I run, she chases, then I turn around and pounce and give her love. I'd really like a better alternative, like fetch, though.

And on to my happy news! Spokane finally has a dog park! yay! Whisper went for the first time today. I've been socializing/testing her with several family members dogs during recent visits and she did really well. I recently heard about the county opening up a park and decided to go check it out. We kept her on a long lead for the first half hour or so, walked all around and let her check things out. She was doing so well we decided to go ahead and let her off the lead. She was awesome! Came every time we called (absolute shock) and she was so well behaved. She used very good doggy manners. It was a gorgeous day and would have been perfect for pictures but of course I forgot the camera. I am hoping it will be nice tomorow so we can go again. I will take pictures then and post a few. She really seemed more inclined for the most part to stick within a few feet of us, away from the other dogs, or go visit other people who didn't have a whole pack at their feet. =) However, by the end of our time there (we spent about two and a half hours) she was actually getting brave enough to approach some of the other dogs! Every now and then she would start to run towards the other dogs that were tearing around, get part way there, then she would come running back to us "oh no I canged my mind!" I didn't want to push her too much this time. Hopefully after a few visits she will realize how fun the dogs are, not just the people. She did seem interested in the smaller dogs though, which was a good sign. They probably weren't as intimidating. There was a woman with several small terriers and whisper went right up to sniff them. All in all she had fun and I had fun and she is absolutely passed out on the couch.
