à cambiato tutto, in maniera straordinariamente veloce.

Money quote: “So far this year the number of icebergs moving into the North Atlantic shipping lanes has spiked, forcing vessels to either slow down or make long detours. Some 616 icebergs have moved into the shipping lanes so far this year, as compared to 687 in all of 2016.”

Quelle maledette scie chimiche
Money quote: “Runciman is a director of Conspiracy and Democracy, a five-year, Leverhulme-funded project based at the Centre for Research in the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities (CRASSH) that is drawing together researchers across disciplines to assemble a ‘natural history’ of conspiracy theories. He offers a succinct definition. “In the pejorative sense, a conspiracy theory is a view about the world in which the surface story is never the real story. It’s a view without any limits to its scepticism or doubt. It’s a mindset in which nothing that contradicts the theory is taken as anything other than evidence that the theory is true.””

Money quote: “High frequency traders, remote surgeons, and competitive eSports players are all worried about the same thing: latency, which is the lag time between when users at different ends of a connection register a piece of data. Another word for this is ping, which refers to a test in which a machine sends a small data packet to another machine and calculates how long it takes to come back. Low ping will make a connection seem faster. High ping will make it seem slower. In reality, the data is traveling at the same speed, it’s just going farther, or making more stops that add small delays along the way.”

Money quote:
"QUALE L’ELEMENTO PIÃ PREOCCUPANTE EMERSO DALL’INCHIESTA SU MICROSOFT E COMUNE A TUTTI?
E cosÃŽ ÃĻ in tutti i Paesi.

Money quote: “This memory sprang to mind with the recent news that the Google Translate engine would move from a phrase-based system to a neural network. (The technical differences are described here.) Both methods rely on training the machine with a ‘corpus’ consisting of sentence pairs: an original and a translation. The computer then generates rules for inferring, based on the sequence of words in the original text, the most likely sequence of words from the target language.”

Anzi, mucho interessante.
Money quote: “The crucial problem isn’t creating new jobs. The crucial problem is creating new jobs that humans perform better than algorithms. Consequently, by 2050 a new class of people might emerge – the useless class. People who are not just unemployed, but unemployable.
One answer might be computer games. Economically redundant people might spend increasing amounts of time within 3D virtual reality worlds, which would provide them with far more excitement and emotional engagement than the “real world” outside. This, in fact, is a very old solution. For thousands of years, billions of people have found meaning in playing virtual reality games. In the past, we have called these virtual reality games “religions”.”

Money quote: “Adobe Flash has been on the ropes since Steve Jobs went on his famous tirade 7 years ago, but that doesn't mean some sites don't still require it.
For its part, FedEx is apologizing to customers and offering $5 discount for the fact that printing labels online still requires the browser plug-in.”

LA STORIA DI TECHMEME, spiegata bene

Everyone in the industry reads the site, and all serious tech bloggers know where they stand on the Leaderboard.” “I think Techmeme was absolutely an enabler of that inconsequential blogging crap, which I suppose is the bad part of being around so long,” said Brown.”

Stiamo tutti diventando vecchi
Money quote: "There was a brief period in which using electronic mail as a technology reporter was a competitive advantage. It was a way to directly contact people in organizations, cutting out the middleman. That quickly changed, yet my proto-Times email address would live happily in obscurity until it was compromised by an on-the-run computer outlaw named Kevin Mitnick. He believed that I was attempting to track him down. He broke into Internex and began spying on my email account, a fact I was made aware of when a digital Sherlock Holmes named Tsutomu Shimomura actually began pursuing Mr. Mitnick, after having been deputized to do so by the then-assistant United States attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice (who is now Google’s general counsel). It took about two weeks, but Mr. Shimomura would help the F.B.I. apprehend Mr. Mitnick in Raleigh-Durham, N.C. Because I was being spied on, I found that I had become part of the story."

Ghostwriter interplanetari
Money quote: “On July 18 of 1969, as the world waited anxiously for Apollo 11 to land safely on the surface of the Moon, speechwriter William Safire imagined the worst case scenario as he expertly wrote the following sombre memo to President Nixon's Chief of Staff, H. R. Haldeman. Its contents: a contingency plan, in the form of a speech to be read out by Nixon should astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin become stranded on the Moon, never to return, followed by some brief instructions relating to its broadcast. Luckily for all those involved, the memo was never needed.”

Money quote: ““We’re trying to make sure the physical object is saved, as well as the digital, because we don’t know which will last longer,” says B. George, the sound collections curator at the Internet Archive. “When information disappears digitally, it’s gone forever.” If you’ve ever had a hard drive crash, you know this all too well. Storing and preserving the physical media behind all of that information—if it exists—is one way to future-proof the archive. We may someday lose the ability to digitally play back certain file formats (though the Archive is working on that, too), but we’ll always be able to cobble together a machine with a needle and a horn that can play a record, if you can keep that record in good shape.”

Money quote:
"Dear Guardian Editors,
You recently published a story with the alarming headline “WhatsApp backdoor allows snooping on encrypted messages.” This story included the phrasing “security loophole”.
Unfortunately, your story was the equivalent of putting “VACCINES KILL PEOPLE” in a blaring headline over a poorly contextualized piece. While it is true that in a few cases, vaccines kill people through rare and unfortunate side effects, they also save millions of lives.
You would have no problem understanding why “Vaccines Kill People” would be a problem headline for a story, especially given the context of anti-vaccination movements. But your series of stories on WhatsApp does the same disservice and perpetrates a similar public health threat against secure communications.
The behavior described in your article is not a backdoor in WhatsApp."
