Roasted Chestnuts

The guy that sold me the nuts told me that he was the only one in Edinburgh selling em. Man, you really learn how to appreciate roasted chestnuts and hot chocolate in cold places! Posted by Picasa

Edinburgh

On saturday, i took a day trip to Edinburgh, the capitol of Scotland. I had to take a bus from the little university town of St Andrews to a train station called Leuchars, and then take a train to the heart of the bustling capitol.

All i really did was to sight-see and shop, really. Edinburgh is actually quite a nice place. There are quite a few shops there, relatively. Of course, it cannot be compared to Singapore as a shopping city, but hey, at least there is a McDonald's outlet! Yes i had an upsized Big Mac meal for lunch and an upsized Chicken burger meal for dinner. Hey, thats probably gonna be the last time i'm gonna have McDonald's till i get back to Singapore, so don't start telling me how unhealthy it is! Besides... it's good.... !

So well yeah... i really enjoyed the trip. It was... a breather. To get away from everything in St Andrews, the work, the people, the instant food.. Posted by Picasa

I'm bald!

Went to a ball on thursday. It was a school ball, so most of the people were med students! To cut thigns short, there was lots of dancing and lots of booze. Yeah.. thats pretty much it. It ended at 1 and we left the hotel. What happened after that though happened really fast. I was with a group of friends, walking on the sidewalk. Then, one girl walking in front of us suddenly passed out and hit her head on the pavement. It wasn't pretty... she had an epileptic seizure. It must have been the combinations of loud music, booze, and the sudden change in environment. Or something. Anyway, i checked her pulse and her breathing, and then put her in the recovery position. Some others called the ambulance, and called some teachers (who are all qualified docs). So yeah, 2 teachers came and took care of her. The ambulance came half and hour later (half an hour!!) and took her away. She was ok though... but i think she has to pull out of med sch cos of her frequent seizures.

So yeah.. slept at 5am that morning, and had an 11 o'clock lecture on the heart and the coronary circuit to catch. That was pretty torturous... haha.

Oh, one of my teachers, Dr. james chan, is 25. I mentioned in an earlier post that he was probably 30.

Oh, and he plays the violin too.

Cool!

It's 11:10pm and i just got back from a basketball drop-in session. It wasn't the best time for me to play ball cos my legs were all sore from jogging yesterday (which was the first time i exercised since i got here). Anyway, it was fantastic... didn't play too well but i scored a fluke half court 3-pointer ! It was supposed to be a pass.... but hey, i'll take it. =) We were split into 5 teams, and my team won all 4 matches, but that wasn't the best part. Best part was that in my team was a certain Dr. James Chan, who happens to be one of my lecturers in the Bute Med school! So it was cool, we got to know each other pretty well, and chatted about the module, gossiped (abit) about certain other lecturer's drinking habits, and of course, kicked butt on the court.

So now my legs are real tight and sore, but hey i think it was worth it. It's real cool how chill this guy is... he's from cambridge, is a doctor and lecturer, is probably 30, and is good on the court. How cool is that... really God's divine favor here. Now i need to pray for God's supernatural strength cos i have a clinical skills class to prepare for tmr and i'm blogging! Plus i wanna go for badminton on wed. Needa move around abit more.... i'm feeling fat.

Other than that, i think i'm coping with school. Coping isn't my aim, but thats what i'm doing now. Still trying to get on top of things, cos it really is different from high school. No more spoon-feeding, hw or anything like that. It's all lectures and if you can't catch up, well... tough. So i'm needing to buy some more medical books cos my 7 are still inadequate. (7!!). We're talking 150 sing dollars a book... ! But no i won't complain, after all i'm paying with God's money.. haha.

I'm making alot of new friends here, from all over the world.. and i think it really is an experience. Cultures and traditions are good, but we shouldn't be bounded by them. They are just there to make us unique. I have to keep reminding myself that we are all one and the same, as in we're all children of God. Studying here has really been an eye opener, and you learn so many things that you just cannot without going abroad. So if you have the chance, going overseas really is , i won't say good, but a learning experience. Pray about it.

Oh man i just remembered..... there's a room check on wednesday. I needa get my room cleaned up! My room is probably the neatest in my flat of 5, but still... haha.

There's some cheese & wine party going on tmr in the bute medical sch at 7, so i'm gonna go check it out. Cheese & wine.... not my idea of dinner, but oh well. Guess it's a UK thing. Gotta explore the culture!

I need a massage....

I also got a free nursing pen.. cool eh. All you have to do is press the clip thing down and there's light!
And an otoscope. It's the torch thing doctors stick into people's ears.

I feel like doctor already! Posted by Picasa
