I think that I would probably be the happiest person in the world if I became valedictorian of a graduate school class. However, the possibility of that happening is infinitesimally small, and the worth of this toil in the grand scheme of things may be minute. Nothing in the world could make me happier.

Hi,

I don't know when I became a perfectionist.  It was probably sometime in high school or college when I would get competitive with other people.  Now, everything I do is under complete scrutiny.  I challenge everything I do with heavy critique.

I just got engaged to a wonderful guy, but he and I deal with failure in different ways that, I am realizing can sometimes contribute to any fights that we have.  When I "fail" at something, usually I want to find blame in other people or situations.  Dealing with a problem head on as something that is totally my fault just can't seem to be acceptable in my mind.  M (my fiance), on the other hand, will analyze the situation and come up with several solutions on how to deal with it or learn from it.

When I fail or let myself down, I don't want to deal with it in the moment.  That leads to an overexaggeration of what really happened along with a couple panic attacks, to boot.  So, anyway, I felt pretty lost until I found this group.  I don't feel so alone knowing that there are people out there just as strict as I am on the things that we do.

Anyway, I just wanted to announce myself.

By the way, is anyone else ever done a wedding?  Any pointers on the stress would be most appreciated

Hey!

New here too. I'm so glad I found this community!! Thanks for the lovely articles too!!

I've had problems with moral perfectionism especially.
It really was a revelation for me that some people freely can admit a fault (e.g., being late) and not beat themselves up about it. Wow. Or, take a job just as a 'job' (still baffles me;).

I've had a very critical Mom and learnt the patterns of perfectionism and negativism too. Have learnt a lot from books and people in my life, but am still learning. Have had periods of almost stress-free life, and others more stressful.

I'd like to share a story.

A Slovenian singer called Adi Smolar said at a charity concert recently, in a deep husky voice, "We all wish to be happy... And think we have to be beautiful, rich, famous... to get that."
He continued, "If only beautiful people could be happy, I should, could or would never be happy."
Then he burst out into a song that has a refrain roughly translated as 'F*** beauty/fame...!' etc.
Another song was about a toilet roll, deeply moving. How even a toilet roll can help make many people's lives a bit more... beautiful.
He *does* look like a scarecrow. Imagine Bob Dylan with frizzy hair.
He has a lovely wife, two adorable children (one was with him onstage!!)... that don't look like him at all;)) And a wonderful life, I suppose. He knows how to appreciate the little things and laugh at himself.
He writes wonderful lyrics that deal with stuff like wanting to be - or being;)- beautiful, watching a Van Damme movie with a girlfriend,...

I'd really love to take my songwriting and book-writing to a similar level!! To help create a culture that allows people be imperfect and embrace even the 'mistakes' that are sometimes the cutest things about us anyway!! And perfect the world, of course!;))

Hi. I'm a happy perfectionist. [Sep. 17th, 2005|11:03 pm]

Communities here on any sort of real self-improvement seem to be fairly rare. About 95% of those in the perfectionism/self-improvement categories seem to be dedicated either to weight loss or overcoming eating disorders
Rarer still (as far as I can tell) are happy perfectionists, so I thought I'd share what I've done to become one, and hopefully get good ideas from others like me.
One major contributor to me becoming the way I am now is a list of rules to live by that I've come up with for myself:
1. One need not be normal.
2. Don't hate yourself.
3. Use the resources available.
4. Be happy. (yes, you can force yourself to)
5. No regrets.
6. Never forget (whatever it is, generally from this list or something like it, that you need to remember).
7. Question yourself.
8. Give your mind and body what they need.
9. When you know what to do, do it.
10. Focus!
11. Always content, never satisfied.

The last one, I believe, is by far the most important, as it encompasses the mindset required to put the others to their best use: always content to do what everything you can in order improve yourself and your environment, but never satisfied with things the way they are, because there is always room for improvement.

More competition. [Aug. 17th, 2005|08:49 pm]

Hello, I'm another perfectionist joining the community.

I used to be so obsessed with being perfect that I hated every fiber of my being--I still can't look into my own eyes in the mirror without setting my blood boiling--and I was never happy with even being the best, I had to be my best.

My perfectioinism ruined my motivation to do anything for fear that I wouldn't be number one, so in essence, I became a zero. After sinking into a depression, being beaten, I was tired of being a victim of my own goals. I began re-evaluate myself. Instead of reaching my goal in one giant leap, I took that stairs. Against my conscience I took the lowest step at an easy pace. Once I mounted that goal I went for the next a little faster, then the next.

Now that I take my perfectionism one step at a time, it is a gift, not a curse. I can finally reach my goals and shrug it off if I trip on the way.

My advice is to take your goals one step at a time. You will get there just as fast. No sprinter reaches the finish line in one step, okay?

Anyway, hello everyone! I'm a graduate with his sights set on being a cognitive psychologist. Right now I'm preparing to head to college for two years ecperience and then head into the Navy to serve as a counsiler. First I need to earn my darn driver's lisence, I graduated a year early because I took the GED, it's a bit akward for me but oh well. Life is akward. ^_^

Help me, I'm a Perfectionist :\

All my life I have been plagued with procrastination and a fear of responsability & failure. I just thought I was lazy untill I started self harming to avoid finishing projects. I've dropped out of college twice and left two jobs because of this. I want to achieve things, but my subconscious stops me from doing them.

Right now I am at a stage in my life where I don't know what I want, and can't even trust myself to decide. I get an idea, but then I change my mind, leaving me back at square one. I was diagnosed with depression a few months back, been on happy pills since, and I am on the waiting list to see a psychologist.. Maybe then I'll get some help >_<

I'm also fed up with the world. I make up fantasy worlds in my head as a way to escape this one, and thats starting to get a little drastic too. I know humans aren't perfect or anything, but man, I hate this planet so much o_O;;

I have a book of beating Perfection, but since reading it, I haven't been able to force myself to do anything about it. I do seem to suffer from most aspects of Perfection at one time or another.

It's so frustrating and makes me feel even more useless.

I am Dawn, a 33 year old perfectionist. I strive to be perfect in everything I do, well except cleaning. I have no problem not wanting to dust LOl. I am not a happy person, in fact, I would say that I am a miserable person who looks at the negative in everything. I need to focus on what is important but I don't really know what is important to me.

Here are my goals :)

1. Get the house completely clean. I’m going to push myself to the limit. All day clean, clean, clean until It’s finished.

2.When I’m satisfied with the house, get into a healthy lifestyle. Exercise 30 minutes a day, eat less, drink more water, take my pills. Start working on my GED, and make sure to maintain house. Oh, and make sure I use that scar stuff to make my arms look better.

3. Get new clothes when I reach my goal weight since I’ll be smaller.

4. Take my GED, take a driving course (AND PASS THIS TIME)

5. Get a job :)

6. Buy a car.

7. Look into veterinary college.
