i got a calling in church a while ago. as primary secretary. i basically keep track of all the children. well, on paper anyway. it used to be easy-peasy. keywords: used to be. that is, before our ward basically devoured the majority of another ward. we went from having about 30 kids in primary (only like 15 showed up on a regular basis) to having over 60! and the kicker: all of the kids we inherited from the other ward are active, show up faithfully (ha!) every sunday; sun, rain, sleet or snow, these kids are there in their seats sunday morning. awesome, i know. at least for our ward. not so awesome for the other ward; because we took all of the "active" kids, they are left with the "less-than-active" kids. sorry, 2nd ward. we have beefed up the numbers and now have to adjust. or try to. gone are the days of only one primary: we now have to hold junior and senior primary! gone are the days of 3 kids to a class and only 4 classes: we now have one class with 12 kids and 8 different classes! gone are the days of wondering what to do with that hour of free time while the kids were in class: we now are going to be busy busy BUSY! *phew! i'm getting tired just thinking about all i have to do before sunday.
wish me luck.
oh, and does anyone know where i can find colored folders? staples maybe? or office max? help!

missing
something about the holiday season makes me really miss my family. i miss not getting to celebrate with them and renew our traditions. i miss not seeing them open their presents and parade around in a christmas fashion show featuring all their new garb. i miss seeing my mom's fat christmas tree all decorated with ornaments from our childhood. (not ones we made, mind you, because we have about as much craftiness as a box of mac and cheese.) i miss my mom. i miss my dad. i miss my sisters and their husbands and children. i miss my aunt lana. and tristan. and andy (even though he once pile-drived my head into the concrete garage floor; i cannot remember if this was before or after i doused his eyes with pottery barn home spray). i miss it all. the good, the bad and even the ugly (which i was after the pile-driver).
i'm so happy santa will be bringing us an indiana christmas next year.
right, santa? right?
you betcha!

eating disorder
subtitle : finn loves french fries (the subject of schiz' email to me with the following pictures)
this lovely saturday afternoon, we met up with our beloved schiz and the lancy family. (finn's best buddy, johnnycakes, is huh-UGE btw. we hadn't seen him in forever, and he is now the size of a 4yr old, i swear.) anyway, schizzy (that lucky lady) got to sit next to finn. and it's a good thing too. just ask morgan about my territorial nature when it comes to french fries, and you'll know why i say that. better yet, allow me to show you schiz' documentation of what happened once lunch arrived at our table...

okay, i had to make this really big so you get the full effect. french fry in mouth and reaching for more, while poor john, politely eating his singular fry, wonders how he can have a friend with such disgusting eating habits.
i wish we (and by "we" i mean schiz) would have taken a picture when we were leaving of what the floor under the highchair looked like. john's was littered with two, maybe three french fries; finn's was like a soggy half-eaten french fry graveyard. sad. yet so very funny.
he freaking kiped ALL of schiz' fries. it's a good thing she loves him like she does, or he could have ended up on the floor with all his slobbered-up scraps.
question of the day #19
would you still be my friend if i told you i ate spaghetti o's for dinner friday night? no? you wouldn't? then, no, i didn't. because what 27yr old would eat spaghetti o's for dinner? i mean seriously.

since lancy asked so very nicely...
it’s actually a little tedious to do, esp since blogger doesn’t want you to have anything but their orange B. but, once you understand what you’re doing, it’s a piece o’ cake.
1. create your own google site – you have to have this page to “host” your favicon (your own little icon)
2. create or generate your favicon – i think i went to www.tools.dynamicdrive.com/favicon/ and used a screenshot of the V in my blog header as my favicon, but you can just as easily have the site generate one for you; just follow the instructions the site gives you; save your favicon somewhere easy for you to find (like your desktop) and make sure it is saved as “favicon.ico” (if it’s saved as anything else, it won’t work)
3. upload your favicon to your google site – from your site’s main page go to MORE ACTIONS : MANAGE SITE : ATTACHMENTS : UPLOAD; it has to say “top level” in the upload box for your favicon to upload correctly
4. edit your blog’s html (from LAYOUT on your dashboard) – follow the instructions* found @ www.tutzone.org/2009/06/how-to-add-favicon-to-blog.html (blogger REALLY doesn’t want you to know this, or it would have let me just type in what you’re supposed to do or at least used the hyperlink for this site and the dynamic drive site)
5. preview before saving – this way, you know whether it worked
6. save – and say good-bye to the blogger B!
and that, my friends, is that. It sounds way more involved that it is. i promise.
*i copied and pasted BELOW where it says “head” in the layout/edit html, and it worked fine

did you notice anything different here? well, not down here. up there. in your address bar. see it? see? there should be a cute red V right there before all the http stuff. NOW do you see it? i changed it from the boring blogger B to my very own cute red V. man, i am so tech-savvy i can hardly stand it.

and the award goes to...
...me! for having put up with an unnamed company's bs for the last 5yrs. there really is an award for it, i promise. i even got to go online and pick out what exactly i wanted to commemorate not really working for them anymore. i chose 3 t-fal pans. hey, it was either those or a brass desk clock, and i do not enjoy brass nor do i own a desk on which to place a brass desk clock. hopefully mor will be able to put those pans to good use.
...and mor! for being the "mentor of the year." every year since he began working at his current place of employment, i've told him he's deserved this award. and i don't just say it because i'm the wife and i'm supposed to say it; he really does make a difference in the lives of the boys with whom he works. (he found out this week that the boys' parents were asked who they felt had powerfully influenced their sons' lives; mor was the only non-owner/therapist listed.) he's a stud, my hubs. i'm glad others recognize his studliness too.
...and finn! for being the gosh-darnedest cutest baby ever made my humans (inside-ish joke from a mor-and-mike-lau movie production). but honestly, he is. everyday, mor or i comment on it. he really is beautiful. even if his hair has grown over his ears again already.
there you have it, folks. this family is full of awesomeness!

we love you, aunt ric ric.

question of the day #17
how is it that i got a flu shot back in sept, yet i've still managed to get the flu TWICE since then? riddle me that.
the short list
to begin, i've made a tough decision: i'm going to have to boycott the wall family holiday celebrations for a while. the last two times i've attended their festivities, i've thoroughly enjoyed the company and of course the delicious food; however i have NOT enjoyed the 2days of after-party illness i've experienced. so, wall family, i bid your thanksgiving extravaganzas adieu (at least for the time being).
that being said, this year i am thankful for...
...my husband, in all of his holiday hairyness
...my bebe, in all of his slobbery, chubby goodness
...my penelope jones, in all of her stinky smelliness
...my big sister, who traveled like a million miles just to spend the day with me (or so i like to think)
...my biggest sister, who would have traveled like a million miles just to spend the day with me
...my mom, who is really the most amazing person in the world (my sisters and i took a vote, so it's official)
...my dad, who would do/say/give anything for any of his girls
...snuggles and smooches from some of my favorite kids in the world
...steady jobs and paychecks
...warm houses (or ughpts as the case might be)
...my calling in primary (even if the pres is a bit, dare i say?, crazy)
...healthy bodies (present time excluded)
...happy babies
i know i don't say it enough, but i am very thankful for all of these things and people. so, thank you, things and people, for being such a wonderful part of my life. thank you, thank you, thank you.

i love my baby
esp today. i didn't have to get out of bed until almost 9AM! let me type that again: NINE. A. M. i'm sure he was awake before then, but he was quiet as a little church mouse just jabbering softly to himself and chewing on his blankie. now let's see if we can make this a routine. cross your fingers.

help wanted
i want to get finn a fun interactive toy for christmas. (my little deer friend, sadly, does not fall into this category. no matter how hard i tried to convince myself he did.) i've had my eye on the vtech touch and learn musical bee and the leapfrog my puppy pal scout. the bee has a sound sensor (if your baby starts crying in the middle of the night, the bee kicks on and plays lullabies-whoa!), BUUUT the puppy is customizable (you enter your child's info so the puppy can sing to them using their name-whoa!). i'm leaning towards the puppy because it has a boy voice, BUUUT i like the idea that the bee can turn on automatically. sooo...
...which one do i choose? or is there a better one out there?

i was just perusing le internet in an attempt to find christmas gifts for the wee one, when i stumbled upon this...
um, seriously kohls? i don't even know what to say about this, so i'll stop here.

you shot me! you shot me right in the...
thigh! (not exactly the quote from austin powers, but you know.) finn had his 6month checkup today. he's a chubby goose (18lbs on the money) and a bit longer than we were expecting (27 1/4in; seeing as how he seems to take after mor on the long torso/short legs bit). our dr's office has been out of the regular flu vaccine since august (what?!), so mor convinced me to have finn get the h1n1, along with all of his other vaccines. it's a good thing i trust my husband, because when finn got the h1n1 shot, he was very VERY unhappy with us. he's been doing well since; sleeping lots and enjoying his chance to comfort eat (who doesn't enjoy that?).

baby to boy
finn got a haircut today. his hair has never been this short; it was longer than this when he was born for goodness' sakes! but, man, he sure is cute. even with all that cereal on his face.

what a weird world
1. a very dark-skinned black woman running through the kohl's parking lot yelling at a very large white man chasing her to "stop following me!" they eventually copped a squat under one of the little trees to enjoy a smoke together. i'm not sure whether they resumed their activities after said smoke because i was too busy practically throwing finn into the car to get away from them.
2. a 7-legged tarantula at the bean museum. charlotte didn't realize rosie was missing a leg until one of the little boys so delicately pointed it out to her and everyone else within a half-mile radius: "ONE OF HER LEGS FELLED OFF!" which, to be fair to the kid, it had. courtney (a boy, weird) said that rosie's leg fell off last week when she molted. i liked it better when i thought she'd eaten it off, kinda like that guy who had to saw off his own hand. remember him?
3. the liger, also at the bean museum. (if you've never been there, you should go. like, yesterday.) i still am not sure whether i believe shasta was ever really alive even if she is taxidermied and on prominent display at the main entrance. after all, the hogle zoo doesn't have the best reputation where their animals are concerned. (i think i've said this before, but i'm saying it again: last time we were there, a sign on the black bear enclosure said that after trying to eat one of the zookeepers' gloves, it had choked and died. way to go, hogle zoo.)
4. my house being cleaner than it has been since we moved in. disregarding the eat-in part of the kitchen of course. how do people keep that clean anyway? it has always eluded me.

dear finn
i love everything about you:
your wispy yet thick auburn hair
your blue-no-green-no-hazel almond eyes
your long eyelashes
your pointy chin
your full kissable lips
your chubby cheeks
your softer-than-baby-soft skin and perfect complexion
your warm hands and stinky feet
your roly-poly thighs
i love the way you giggle when i pick you up from your nap, every single time without fail.
i love how you smile with your eyes and laugh from deep in your belly.
i love that you always put your hands in your mouth after you take a big bite of cereal.
i love how you kick and splash all the water out of the bathtub.
i love the way you listen so intently when you "talk" to grandma connie on the phone. (she loves that, too.)
i love how you watch penny and that you don't care when she pushes her slobbery bear against you; i love that you'll love her someday as much as she loves you today.
i love when you fall asleep nursing and sigh long, contented sighs in your sleep.
i love how your breath smells.
i love that i get to spend all day, everyday with you.
i love being your mother.
i love you.
happy six months, finners.

i've been wanting to change the font on this here blog for a long time, but i couldn't figure out how. well, unless i wanted to use one of the generic fonts blogger so kindly supplies, which i didn't. and then i saw on a blog design website that i could copy and paste a new font into my blog layout for free. however, the fonts this website provided were not what i was looking for either. as i looked at the hieroglyphics that are html code, i realized how i could change their html code into the html code of the font i wanted. genius! so, i present to you my new font: skia. love it!

christmas came early
we found the most-coveted toy around (a fisher-price jumperoo) for $45; that's less than half what they usually cost. it has proven itself in the few short days we've had it. finn loves it. he gets to kick his little chubby legs to his heart's content, and the more he kicks, the more the lights flash and the music plays. he thinks it is the coolest thing in the world. next to bathtime, of course. he squeals with delight every time he sees me or mor watching him. basking in the spotlight already. to indulge him even further, here are some pics of finners enjoying the jumperoo.
bright-eyed and bushy-tailed
guess what i was doing at 5:30a this morning. give up? pretending to be asleep, hoping that my baby would follow suit. did he? you ask. no, of course he didn't. so what did we do? you ask. well, we certainly didn't put him in his papasan in the bathroom with a loop of white noise playing on the computer and close the door. no, siree, we didn't. okay, maybe we did. but guess what. he fell right to sleep until 7:30a, waking me up just in time to see the bullet express infomercial. that kid of mine, how did he know i would rather watch early-morning infomercials than get extra sleep?

agh! my eye!
i inherited many wonderful things from my mother, one of which is her (flawless) complexion. to go along with this smooth skin came skintags. i know, it's gross. and sometimes painful. i could deal with them when they showed up on my neck (a favorite dwelling for these little nuisances), but then i got one on my eyelid. at first, it didn't bother me. i mean, i don't remember NOT having it; it's always just kind of been there. i never thought of having it removed until a dr from my old office proposed i let him do just that, remove it. i was 8mo pregnant at the time, so there were more pressing matters on my mind (and bladder). then, i had finn and quit working and lost my insurance. i was going to be okay with it. i didn't really have another option than to be okay with it. until...mor asked me if it was getting bigger. and it was. bigger and uncomfortable. i crossed my fingers in hopes that i'd made a good enough impression and called this miracle-working dr to beg him to remove it today. he obliged and didn't even make me pay him in treats or diet coke. a set of tweezers, a verrry sharp scalpel, several gauze pads and a few drops of silver nitrate, and i was good as new. or will be soon.

oh yeah, i also got my flu and tb shots, gratis. thank you, ihc. so glad i decided to stay on your payroll. now let's hope i'm still on their good side when christmas bonus time rolls around.

facebook friday
i did it. i joined facebook. hipocrisy, i can hear you say. i know, i know. but, trust me; i'm not in it to stalk anyone. (i can do that on here, der.) i don't know exactly why i gave in. i just know this: i will not be one of those people who has to update their status every 30sec (isn't that what twitter is for?) or adds people simply because they are a friend of a friend of a friend or spends hours browsing through newly-updated friends' profiles and photo albums. i vow, here and now, that i will only check in on the fb on friday mornings. now, if you'll excuse me, i have to go ignore several friend requests.

this girl, whose blog i read...
i've found myself using this phrase WAY more often than is healthy. and then, after i've read "this girl's" blog once, i want to read it again. and again. aaand again. the downside is that i cannot always remember where i found "this girl's" blog, so i've created a solution to my problem: a link list on my blog. copy and paste the address and "this girl's" blog is as good as...um...i don't know, but at least this way i don't have to rely on my sometimes unreliable internet history list to direct me back. ta-da. i know. you're jealous you didn't think of it first.
for those of you who aren't so hot at putting two and two together, "this girl's" blog is under this girl, whose blog i read... down to the right. you're welcome.

did you know there is a unicycle gang in our neighborhood? because there is. if you can call 3 very lanky, awkward mexican teens riding unicycles a gang. which i think you can.

wicable
since quitting my job and losing our insurance, mor and i decided to take full advantage of the advantages of being poor in america. first, we got medicaid. (only for finn; mor makes too much money for us to qualify. boo.) second, i got on wic. "i feel no personal shame or guilt"* because once mor's done with school, we'll be putting a lot more back into society that we ever took. the beauty of wic is that it pays for most of our monthly supply of milk and juice and all of our monthly supply of cheese, peanut butter, bread, eggs, cereal etc. (i say "most" because we go through more than 6gallons of milk and 64oz of juice a month. what? i'm a growing girl.) however, wic does have its downfalls. while i was at target today, i picked up a 20oz loaf of bread and reduced fat colby-jack cheese. i am only allowed to have 16oz of bread and regular colby-jack cheese. poor rhonda didn't know any better, so she kept trying to ring up that bread and cheese with a very confused look on her face. and then andy or anthony the asian manager (who is about 20yrs rhonda's junior) came over and told her very sternly that she hadn't checked the weight of the bread or the fat content of the cheese and that is why they were coming up as "not wicable." as he walked away to pick up the correct bread and cheese, she just shrugged her shoulders and said "doesn't all bread weigh the same?" apparently not, rhonda. apparently not. that sara lee makes her bread a whole 4oz heavier than wonder. when it came time to ring up my $10 worth of fresh fruit, i just threw up my hands and said i'd pay for it myself. along with my muffin mix and granola bars (both of which are "not wicable.")
also while i was waiting for andy/anthony to return with my "wicable" items, the little boy behind me asked if i wouldn't mind taking his trash please. sure, kid. since you've had to wait on my sorry a for choosing the unwicables, anything.
*name that partial movie quote. i'll give you a hint: it ends with "but i could lose my job on security grounds."

toon in
being that finn has started waking up at the butt-crack of dawn the last few days, i have taken to watching the early-morning cartoons. sadly, they are nothing like i remember from when i was little. i think the worst one (or at least one of the worst ones) is sid the science kid. and i feel blasphemous for even saying that (let alone believing it) because it has my beloved jim henson's name attached to it. it isn't sid that i think is stupid; it's his friend jerold. first of all, who named the poor pink retarded kid jerold? you should be fired. secondly, why does jerold talk like he's retarded. in today's episode, they were discussing weather and weatherpeople and weather-related, um, things, and whenever jerold would (try to) say the word "meteorologist," it was like the part in "billy madison": "t-t-today, junior!" except it was "m-m-me-motoreolo-mertolo-meteorologist." i couldn't change the channel fast enough. and this show is on pbs? what are you teaching my child? how to have a speech impediment? sheesh.

labor day, revisited
over labor day, matty and erica and their brood came into town. (i like to think it was just to see me and mine.) we had a lot of fun while they were here. i actually got out of the house and did something physical: a hike to stewart falls. if i had known it was going to be hours-long, i probably would have opted out. i'm glad now that i didn't, but i was the most complainiest (that includes our party of 3 very vocal youngsters and 2 pretty spry 60ers). allow me to place blame on someone else for my complaints though: when i asked mor what i should wear, he said "pants, definitely pants." um, bad choice. and the tall cotton socks weren't a big help either. nor was the carrying of a sleepy, sweaty baby. by the time we reached the falls, i was ready to tap out. no thanks, i'll just wait here for the next shuttle. what? there isn't a shuttle? that's okay. i'll still wait here for it.

towards the beginning, only minimal complaining had commenced

we're following the leader, the leader, the leader

big kid coop and the falls

mor and finners and the falls

someone told my dear, sweet sister you are supposed to aim for the hip when taking pictures...bad idea here (although it does allow you to see my rolled-up jeans and tall socks)
morals of the story: i thoroughly enjoy nature, mostly from the confines of my car or my home (thank you, natgeo); and the next time this girl goes on any outdoor excursion, she will be doing some calisthenics beforehand.

morals of the story: i thoroughly enjoy nature, mostly from the confines of my car or my home (thank you, natgeo); and the next time this girl goes on any outdoor excursion, she will be doing some calisthenics beforehand.

flashback
we found out last labor day that our little finners was coming. i left the pregnancy test on the counter in the bathroom, so mor was sure not to miss it when he got home from work. (he goes directly to the loo whenever he gets home from anywhere. do not pass go; do not collect $200.) it all seems very surreal now that it was as simple as that. one day i'm just an innocent bystander, the next i'm an expectant mother. it is crazy to think about our lives before finn; what did we do with all that free time before nap times and bath times and bed times? what did we spend all of our money on before diapers and wipes and onesies? what did we talk about before conversations revolved around our little man? i have a feeling i will never remember life before finn. and i've never been more okay with anything.

question of the day #14
Q : how many movies can you watch* in one day before losing your sanity (or what's left of it after packing/moving/unpacking all with a baby and a dog while your husband works ridiculous hours) and all sense of time?
A : 4; after movie #5, giselle isn't the only one talking to woodland creatures or imagining ways to make dresses out of drapery panels
* i use this term loosely, as i did actually clean, unpack, do laundry and feed my baby as the movies ("clue," "shag," "enchanted," "bedknobs and broomsticks" and "nancy drew" in case you needed to know) were playing.

coming soon
pictures and a post about our new digs. quickly, for some reason, now that we're partially unpacked and moved in, the shag and linoleum aren't as bad as i thought. they're starting to grow on me.
just like the mold.

question of the day #13
overheard at target this evening
5yr old little boy to father: but i want it! why can't i have it? why won't you buy it for me?
father to 5yr old: because it's a snuggy.
father (sarcastically) to me when he hears me giggle: whose kid is that?

all god's creatures
this week, i've watched 5 bees fly to their death. and i didn't feel one bit bad about it. except for the last one, who just kept stepping all over his little fallen comrades.

alone with my thoughts
to take my mind off having to move next week, i decided to give the blog a bit of a facelift. just some minor color changes and new header (courtesy of wordle). but now that that's finished and the wee one is sleeping, i'm left to thoughts of moving. at first, i was really distraught about leaving the home where we've lived for two and a half years. i love this house and have done my best to make it our home. then, i was really distraught that not only do i have to leave my home, i have to move into an apt. do you know how hard it is to make an apt homey? practically impossible, i tell you. THEN, i was really distraught that we might not get to take our penny-girl with us. she's been one of my best friends for the last almost 3yrs. esp now that mor has to be gone so much during the day for work and school. (and you can call me crazy, sisters, but until you have a pet of your own, i'll just brush it off.)* and THEN, i was really distraught that we actually have to MOVE. do you know what all that entails? too much: packing, cleaning, organizing, unpacking, more cleaning, reorganizing etc. and THEN, i realized that we have an entire week to move from our house to our ughpt (ugh + apt, der); our ughpt is almost the same size as our house; there is a yard and covered parking and a small storage unit and washer/dryer hookups; it's closer to work and school for mor and target and costco for me (yea!); it's going to save us close to $400/mo, which, with me not working, $400 might as well be $4000.
huh.
i guess being left to my thoughts isn't such a bad thing afterall.
*no worries, our current landlord talked our future landlord into letting us keep penny. hooray for travis! and thanks, mom, for being a willing adoptive parent.

finn goes swimming
we tried this out a few times a couple of weeks ago, but the water was just too cold (for me, mostly). while we were in ca for hill and james' wedding, we thought we'd try again. it was a success. if finn had gills (ha!), he would have stayed in the pool all. day. long. now we just have to work on his tan.

the small swimmies came up to under the poor kid's armpips

finners and mommers

look out, si swimsuit edition!

our little gilligan

all done and all dry
