What a great start to the new year! On Saturday, January 2nd, Brendan and I went to
Changing Hands Bookstore in Tempe to see Brandon Mull, Brendan's favorite author! Brandon is the author of some of Brendan's favorite books, the
Fablehaven series, and
The Candy Shop War. He was there to talk about his newest book, a children's picture book called
Pingo. He read the book and had a Q&A section. We are anxiously awaiting
Fablehaven #5, due out in March. And Brandon said he'll have a new, 3 book series, the
Beyonders, starting in 2011.
Brandon was a great author to meet. He answered all of Brendan's questions, and he graciously signed ALL of Brendan's books. While he was signing, he asked Brendan about his BYU hat, how old he was, and what he liked to do! Apparently he was at BYU around the same time I was! I'm just waiting for
my million-dollar story idea to present itself!
We started out with breakfast at Wildflower, next door to Changing Hands. We had time since we arrived pretty early!
While we waited for Brandon to arrive, we read through a book of Mensa IQ and brain stumper questions!

Brendan was in the school Spelling Bee today. He came in third place which means he advances to the next level--the quad-campus Bee next Thursday! He is our Facts Whiz! When I was helping him study for the bee, we came across the word "bezoar." He promptly spelled it and told me it was easy because it's used twice in the Harry Potter books, once in Book 1 and once in Book 6 (or something like that)!
