Devon, historically known as Devonshire, is a ceremonial and historic county in south-west England, United Kingdom, bordered by Cornwall to the west, Somerset and Dorset to the east, and the Bristol Channel and English Channel to the north and south respectively. It covers an area of approximately 6,700 km² and is one of the largest counties in England. Devon has a highly varied landscape, including long and contrasting coastlines, rolling farmland, deep river valleys, and two major upland areas: Dartmoor and Exmoor. Major rivers include the Exe, Teign, Torridge, and Tamar, the latter forming much of the boundary with Cornwall.
Geologically, Devon is exceptionally diverse and lends its name to the Devonian Period, first recognised from rock sequences exposed within the county. Devon exposes a complex assemblage of Devonian marine sedimentary rocks, including limestones, sandstones, and slates, which were folded and faulted during the Variscan orogeny. These rocks are intruded by granitic bodies, most notably the Dartmoor Granite, which is associated with extensive contact metamorphism and mineralisation. Younger Carboniferous, Permian, and Triassic sedimentary rocks occur particularly in eastern Devon, while Quaternary deposits are widespread along river valleys and coastal margins.
Devon has a long and important mineral and mining heritage, historically centred on tin, copper, lead, and arsenic, especially in association with the Dartmoor and wider Cornubian granites. The county is also internationally significant for china clay (kaolin) and ball clay, particularly in the Bovey Basin, which remain economically important. Quarrying of limestone, slate, and granite has been widespread and has strongly influenced local building traditions. Metal mining in Devon extended into the 21st century at the Hemerdon Mine (also known as the Drakelands Mine), a large hard-rock tungsten deposit with associated tin mineralisation near Plymouth, which produced commercially until 2018. Hemerdon represents one of the most recent examples of large-scale metal mining in England.
Administratively, Devon is divided into district councils and unitary authorities, with Exeter traditionally regarded as the county town and historic administrative centre. The historic name Devonshire remains in use in ceremonial and cultural contexts. Devon has a strong regional identity shaped by its moorlands, maritime setting, and long association with mining, agriculture, and trade. Its geology has played a fundamental role in shaping its landscapes, economy, and its enduring importance in the development of geological science.

However, von Knorring, O. and Condliffe, E. (1984): On the occurrence of niobium-tantalum and other rare-element minerals in the Meldon aplite, Devonshire. Mineralogical Magazine 48, 443-448, states "Beryllonite occurs in whitish grains some 2 mm across and is mostly enclosed in elbaite with some lepidolite and quartz. It is fibrous and silky in appearance and is closely associated with pollucite, orthoclase, petalite, and lepidolite."

| ⓘ Evansite ? Formula: Al3(PO4)(OH)6 · 6H2O Habit: Amorphous. Colour: Milk white to creamy white, also various light to mid browns when stained by 'limonite' Description: Many fracture surfaces in the Wavellite-rich mudstones are coated with a milky-white, amorphous material, often stained with 'limonite'. No crystalline structure has been observed in this material to date. Some fractures completely infilled with this material.
Placement on the outside of wavellite balls places formation late in the mineralisation of the site.
While still wet, the texture is somewhat greasy and reminiscent of fungal growth, but on drying, a fine, earthy texture is revealed, with a hardness of around 2.5 - 3
Tentative identification requires further investigation. References: |

Geochronology
Mineralization age: Phanerozoic : 341 Ma to 58.7 ± 1.6 MaImportant note: This table is based only on rock and mineral ages recorded on mindat.org for this locality and is not necessarily a complete representation of the geochronology, but does give an indication of possible mineralization events relevant to this locality. As more age information is added this table may expand in the future. A break in the table simply indicates a lack of data entered here, not necessarily a break in the geologic sequence. Grey background entries are from different, related, localities.
