It's been a time long coming... [Jul. 2nd, 2008|12:17 am]

Wow..it's been over 3 months since I've written on this thing...wow. Loads have happened since the last post. I was laid off at my job, but miraculously found an other one within a couple of days of hearing that I'd be laid off. I really don't know my my old boss has just gone psycho and has been firing people left and right for no reason, but I think this one was a blessing in disguise. As much as I liked the kids and my coworkers, the pay was less than desirable, and the directors had a way of talking down to you, not to you with respect. The new job is at the JSU Child Development Center (more on that in a bit), and so far, things have been like a big breath of fresh air. I love being there, there's a day and night difference between the staff, kids, and environment, and in a good way. My main class is with the group classified as the 2-2 1/2 year olds. Crazy stuff.

Everything is a go for the massage therapy stuff. I've sent my application to the program a few weeks ago, and now I've got to pay for a background check and I've got to get a record of my immunizations sent to the school. I haven't been advised yet, but as soon as everything is taken care of, I'll ask about it.

The JSU CDC has very recently been sold to a private person to use as a daycare. Due to Gov. Riley reducing funding to schools, the university has had to trim the hedges of things it really doesn't see as profitable, so as soon as August 1st, the center will be under new management. Obviously, the staff isn't too happy (loss of benefits, pay reduction, 401(k), etc), so several I've talked to have decided to move on to bigger and better things. I've personally decided to stay (especially since I've just started). I've got an interview on Monday at around 1:15, but I don't think I have anything to worry about since I've got a good bit of experience and have a strong work ethic.

I've really began to get disgusted with myself. I haven't been working out as much as I've used to, I've let myself go, but I guess this is more appropriate for my other weight loss related blog. I had a bad case of heartburn last night, and that's usually a sign that I should get back to work on me.

Thank God today's a 4 day week. I'm going to Knoxville to see my parents for the 4th. The City of Knoxville has a really cool concert/fireworks display in World's Fair Park that I've gone to the past couple of years. I'm looking forward to it.

Giving up on a deam for something totally different [Mar. 30th, 2008|10:37 pm]

[music |Chelsea Lately]

Well, the last couple of weeks or so has really given me a lot of insight on life. About 2 1/2 weeks ago, a certain talk with my boss made me realize that maybe education isn't where I should be. I still love kids, and I love education, but the whole process of trying to get my GPA up for the school of education was really taking too much time, and wasting money as well. I've decided to take a new route- I'm going after massage therapy now. I've always known that I give pretty good massages (not to toot my own horn, so to speak, but I've been told so), but I've never thought about giving it a shot. I guess the thing that got my attention was learning that a parent of one of the kids in my class teaches courses in massage therapy at the local community college.

After much deliberation, I've decided to go for it. I think it's something I'd really like, not to mention that I've heard the money isn't anything to complain about, either. I'll enroll for this coming fall, and hopefully graduate fall of next year, since it's only an 18 month program. Luckily, the classes are at night, so it wouldn't affect work that much. It will mean longer days, as classes don't get out until 10p or 11p. I know that it'll be like running a marathon of responsibility, but I'm ready to give it a shot. As much as I'm eager to begin this new endeavor in my life, I'm ready to put college behind me.

EDIT- I'm not engaged or anything, but I've already decided what I'm going to do for my reception, whether *he* likes it or not. : p

...and time moves on [Feb. 12th, 2008|10:32 pm]

I know it's been a good while since I've posted, so I guess I should, right?

Not a lot has been really noteworthy. Due to some school stuff, I've decided to take some time off from school. I've got some old credits that I have holding me back from any chance of raising my GPA for the College of Education and that limit my financial aid, so I guess I'll just be working until those expire. I know that it'll delay me a good amount of time, but there's nothing I can really do to change or eliminate the screwing up I did when I first started college. In the mean time, I've taken on full time hours at the daycare in the same room I've been in for a while. Things are going well, though it's so weird to see the kids that I started with in the baby room grow up into the bigger kids. I know life happens, but I think that it's just a reminder of how old I'm getting. Working at a daycare will do that to you.

After being incredibly busy with work, school, and life last semester, I've decided to give the whole weight loss thing another try. With me working as much as I was last semester on top of school, it pretty much left me no time to really do anything, fitness-wise. Well, since I'm getting off of work at an earlier hour now, I've decided to see what I can do. Time's been the thing since the days have been shorter. So far, I think I've been back into it for maybe 2-2 1/2 weeks, and I can already feel a difference. My favorite pair of jeans has started to become noticeably loose, and shirts have become a bit looser as well. I know I've lost weight, but I have no idea how much because I don't have access to a scale. I saw a really cool one at the store this evening. It's a Weight Watchers scale that keeps track of weight loss, which I find incredibly cool. It keeps track of weight as well as weight loos, and displays the weight lost since the last weigh in. I almost bought it tonight, but I decided to wait until next week's paycheck to invest in that. Nonetheless, I'll keep on truckin...I think all work out/weight loss progress will now be documented in my blog I started a long while back that hasn't been touched since this past summer, I believe. (bigloser_sarah)

I suppose that's it for now.

kinda weird... [Dec. 15th, 2007|01:29 am]

So, I was in Wal-Mart last night doing some grocery shopping, when I kind of ventured out into the baby section to see what they had (it's also kind of funny to see all of the bottles out there and then saying which kid from my class has that bottle) All was going well looking at the cute things that they had, when I saw a bib with a rather odd saying on it. Now I know bibs today have cute and sometimes sassy sayings on them, but this particular one caught me off guard...

Does anyone else see this as kind of weird or is it just me?

I also had some other thoughts, but I think they're best kept to myself in a paper journal.

...my first holiday project as a teacher! Granted I work in a daycare, but it's still a memorable accomplishment. All ideas and work done by me.

It's just a shame that we'll only get to have it up for a little over 2 weeks.

Those pesky insurance/UPD guys... [Sep. 13th, 2007|10:17 am]

Well, school is now back in session, this being the 3rd week, first full week. Classes are going well, and unlike last semester, I've got a good feeling about the semester. For some reason, Spring semester felt all crappy. I'm not sure why, but it just did. I managed to do well overall. I've got to retake a class, but I might end up doing better the second time around.

I'm attempting Spanish again. It's been over 3 years since I last took a Spanish class, and lately (at least before the semester), I've seen words in regular life that I know that I know, but for the life of me, I couldn't remember. The class I thought I wanted to get back in to was at the same time as one of my other classes, so I decided I'd try to do my best at 201 even though I've been out a while. Taking a 102 level class would have been good at reintroduction, even though I've already passed that level. Well, when I showed up for class, I seemed to be in the same boat as a good majority of my classmates. For now, it's pretty much just basic review...I'm sure we'll get into the more intense stuff later (the stuff I'm learning now is what I learned in 102. I'm sure that this will be a better attempt in this level Spanish since in my last attempt, I got a new teacher who wasn't really liked, and who also seemed too advanced in his teaching than the course level he was supposed to be teaching.

Yesterday was quite an interesting day at work, well at least toward the end. I was helping the mom of one of the kids in my class by bringing out her daughter's car seat. There happened to be one of those child safety seat inspection days sponsored by one of the local insurance agents. On hand were some of the police officers from JSU to help make sure everything was up to par. As we reach the mom's car, one of the insurance agents comes up to us all matter-of-factly, and then asks "Okay, which one of you is the mom?" Obviously, it was rather awkward. I simply replied that I only worked there and was helping the mom bring the car seat out. I'm glad he was just doing the job he was supposed to do, but that was a little overkill.

This weekend- I'll be going to Auburn to the AU-Miss. St. game. I was looking at my calendar this past weekend and decided that it's high time I do something fun and un-school/work related. I haven't been to an AU game in a few years, so it should be a fun time, not to mention, it'll be my first time seeing my sister march in the band, even though this will be her third year marching.

Everything's gonna be okay... [Aug. 9th, 2007|07:22 pm]

[mood |hopefulhopeful]

I'm not bitter anymore. I guess I was having a female day.

Well, today is the first day of school. Not for me, but the first day at the preschool. It's hard to see the kids that were in my class move up. In fact, 4 of the 6 kids I had in the baby room when I started in January are now in the 1's class. As far as my class, we're only going to have 4 kids for now. Only 3 will be this week, and the other one will be starting when JSU starts, since his mom's a student. In all of the preparations we've been doing to get ready, it's given me a small glimpse as to what it's going to be like as a teacher once I get out in the world. I have to say, it's pretty exciting. There's going to be an Open House tonight at work, so the parents can come by and meet the teachers and learn how the classroom operates on a day-by-day basis. I'm pretty sure I'll have to bounce between the 2 rooms I've been working at this summer, which will be pretty crazy.

I've been going to a new church since about the time I moved into the new apartment (late April). My roommate had been going to it, and invited me to go, especially after I told her how unfulfilling my church had been to me. In my opinion, going to church seemed to be routine, and worship seemed to be a stage show instead of a genuine worship time. Maybe it's the new-ish pastor (nice guy, but I'm not too crazy about his sermons), or maybe it's that God has been opening my eyes to this. Maybe it's me, but I really hate church politics. Pretty much ever since I started going to this new church, I've really felt a spiritual jumpstart. Things seem a lot more hopeful. Even though I hate that it's a 30 minute drive to the middle of nowhere to get to this church, it's very much worth it. The past couple of weeks have definitely been times where I've gotten something from the message/worship experience. With everything the way it is this summer, I was finally able to realize something that God was trying to put through this hard head of mine for a little while- "Everything's going to be okay."

I had a small post, but I decided to change it to just a few sentences. I'm having a "Sarah is pissed at the world" week. I really don't want to elaborate on any exclusives. Let's just say the end of August can't come soon enough.

So, I've been away for a while. Without any tv stations in the apartment and no internet as of yet, I feel rather secluded. I've watched the same DVDs multiple times, I've actually pretty much memorized downloaded radio talk show segments. Sad, huh?

Work has been absolutely crazy. I've subbed 4 of the last 5 days this week. I'm sure it would have been all 5 days had I been in town when they needed me. Even though they increased my hours by 2 hours a day for the summer, it still feels like it's not enough, and I know it isn't. That's why I've been relying on the sub jobs. I've been getting a whole lot, pretty much since I'm one of the only subs not taking classes this May/summer, and one of the only ones who can be in at any time, which is an advantage. I know Friday's paycheck will be rather nice compared to my past ones...I've been definitely pulling the hours. I've got to be selective with this check though, since rent's due on the 1st and since my sister and I are going to the Cubs-Braves game in Atlanta on the 9th, this time it's my time to pay. I don't think I'll be too strapped for money, though. As long as I can make it past the 9th, I'll be ok.

I've really been contemplating on a big purchase. Not a house or a new car, but a laptop. I've got a desktop, which is great, but it's rather inconvenient when I want to check email and have access to messengers, my music, pictures, etc. I've been looking around a little bit, but I'm really not sure which to select. I think my budget will be in the ballpark of $850, which I know will really narrow down what I can/can't get.I've seen some nice ones on the Best Buy website, but I'm still undecided as to what I should get. Since the JSU campus and many places around town have wireless internet, it'll be nice to have around when I'm waiting on laundry to finish up or if I'm between classes/work. Does anyone have any suggestions?
