Ladies,
I cannot tell you how disappointed I am in your efforts to communicate with me. Your choice to procrastinate has consequences.
Thank you to those who were organzied enough to look at your schedules, check the date - April 30, and know that it was not a possibility for you to attend. You did not sign up showing interest in going.
Based on the list of people who did sign up, I proceeded with sending e-mails - 5 to be exact - with your names, giving you several opportunities to respond and tell me you could not go.
But what has happened is a list of 30 students have become 16, and several have waited until today to tell me.
Because of your lack of planning and communication, I have now made arrangements and spent money that did not need to be. Like voting, this is what happens when you do not think your participation makes a difference.
I have a busy life too, and taking an entire day to do this Gospel Fest with you requires sacrifice you cannot appreciate. However, I have shown an immense amount of respect for your sacrifice by communicating with you how much time this endeavor would take. I never expected you to be able to do this. When I saw the interest, I decided to sacrifice my time as well, for you.
Gospel choir has always been an improvisation. We make the best with what we have and roll with it. For you, it's as easy as showing up during break when you're free, but for me it's a lot of work meeting twice a week and planning things like this event. Tomorrow, those of us who go will improvise and do our best, but every once in a while, it would be nice to plan something two months in advance and have it work.
I always viewed Gospel choir as a partnership. But now it feels like I'm doing more work than necessary to keep it going, so . . .
After tomorrow, we will not meet on Thursdays and Fridays for the remainder of the year so you can all be free to do your work, make conferences, and the million other things that keep you from being able to participate. I'm not upset, I'm just depressed and disappointed that it turned out this way. I've got to regroup and find a way to make this work better.
When I asked for your feedback before, you told me - "Rehearse on Thursday and Friday so I can make it." I heard your voice and made the adjustment for you.
However, you only came a few times. And now, your voice is also very clear, but I don't know what to do next.
Thanks to all of you for participating, and sorry for those of you who have been committed to coming every week. I know it has been disappointing this year seeing the numbers go up and down so dramatically. I didn't like it much either.
- Mr. Coleman
