Rest Easy My Lady

After a month long series of deteriorations and rallying, my gorgeous, beautiful, adored girl lost her battle. The seizures, most likely brought on by the tumour causing liver failure and toxins being released into her system, became more frequent and damaging and her recovery time longer. She had a good day on Saturday, she was bright and had an appetite. On Sunday morning she had a major seizure that incapacitated her and it was clear that she had resolved to give up and it was time to say goodbye to her. Her pulmonary system had weakened to the point of collapse and she was struggling to breathe.

We were with her at the end, held her, comforted her and she passed painlessly surrounded by great love and affection.

Her loss is a grief like nothing I have ever experienced. My home is empty, silent, lifeless. The sounds of her existing defined my life. The warmth of her presence brought me great comfort in dark times. Her love, companionship and friendship and gentle nature a constant soothing source of happiness. She was like no other and I can scarcely express how much I miss her or quantify the gaping hole in my soul. I am very grateful for the privilege of having been along with her on her journey, of having earned her love and the joy she brought to my life. I miss you so much my friend.

Decade of blogging.

It did didn't it? My livejournal just turned ten this week. Least I think it did.

8 Years ago in Mexico...

Saturday 06-10-2001 - Rosarito, Mexico

It's $10 into Papas & Beers, ladies are free (not that kind of free, the Dublin Event Guide kind of free) and the drink is the cheapest so far. We've comparatively shopped. The place next door has the drink, ladies and bungee jumping for free. But the prospect of some beered-up fratboy swinging pendulously over our heads, singing "HEEEEEYYYYYYAAAYYBABY", being sick and trailing ever decreasing circles of stringy donkeypuke in some vomit voodoo just didn't prove incentive enough for us. Little did I know.

Papas and Beers looks like they bought the remains of the set for the Flintstones movie and strung a few Christmas lights over it. The bouncers are, to be blunt, f*cking scary. Noras newest novelty cigarettes smell not unlike mariajuana and attract the unwanted attention of the circling brutes masquerading as security. So far so strange. The main focus of attention is a beer spattered gym mattress, that is pretty unremarkable in itself except for the giant mechanical bull protruding from its centre. It is controlled by a dodgy looking bloke who must be named Chico, who never smiles and looks like the circus ran away on him. He is merciless. Various Americans in advanced states of intoxication test their manhood for all of 10 seconds before being hurled or hurling. But that is merely the entree.

From nowhere, a hugely muscular person of indeterminate gender steps out of the crowd and in one leap, is aboard the bull. From where I stand, it's extremely difficult to discern which sex it belongs to and I'm five feet away. It has huge beefjoints for calves, straining to get away from the body they're not sure they belong to. As Nora comments "God, that person's really ripped". Or as Clive James would have it, he/she "looks like a walnut in a condom". It manages with some grace to remain on the bull despite Chicos ever more frenetic attempts to buck the rider. And to the crowds delight and Chicos disdain, a silicone sculpture of a breast is revealed. It must be plastic surgery.

The whole crowd seems uneasy. Isi turns her head in disgust. I think it's one of the most bizarrely compelling sights I've ever seen - not one for the grandchildren but one for the pub at 3am in the morning. With no mean display of skill, it manages to slide its bikini briefs aside and starts to "fiddle" with itself, shall we say, and smell the results while maintaining perfect poise on a big mechanical bull. Fascinating. This wasn't on the menu last time I checked. This final act of dubious virtue seems to rile Chico to action and with one deft flick of the controls, He-Woman is catapulted onto the mat. It hasn't had enough though and decides to simulate sex with the bull. Around about now the novelty wears off, the tequila kicks in and Isi and Nora help me home as I sing Jeff Buckley very badly at the top of my lungs.

Weird, weird evening.

I've seen that first one before.

The second one is new to me. I laughed, and then I felt bad because it's kind of mean to make fun of people who are too stupid to realise they are being made fun…

The real Ellen is definitely a more tolerable character.
