| Wine Country Sojourn |

Has anyone here toured the wine country in Burgundy, France? We've rented a cottage in Beaune over a long weekend for next month and want to know which wineries to hit while we are there. The teetotaling in-laws are also coming (mostly for babysitting purposes.) Besides walking and biking, does anyone know of other baby friendly activities they can engage themselves with while their son and I get hammered?

I have a friend who is Puerto Rican who is planning a trip to Poland. While I know it might not be as bad as the former Soviet Union, how scary a time will it be with all racism up and down the Eastern Bloc? I will forward all suggestions and ideas to her. She would also love ideas on where to eat in Poland, what to see, etc. Thanks! I know it's been quiet here, but i know there are some people who have been to Czech Republic and other eastern European places. It would be interesting to hear your experiences to pass on to her.

| Ecuador slash Latin America |
[06 Jan 2005|09:02pm] |
Hey, anyone been to Latin America at all, or specifically Ecuador, or anywhere in Central America even. Im trying to go to Ecuador for two months this summer and yah, I know its beautiful and all, but are there abnormallly high racial tensions between like mestizos, whites, and blacks? I read in a book about racism in Latin America that they're pretty high in brasil and dominican republic, so much so that 95 percent of students in the studies pointed out that they noticed it, which i thought was high, considering high schoolers are usually too stupid to realise racism exists, yah so i was wondering if thats pretty much what i could expect in ecuador, too.
thanks, anyfing helps.

What is everyone doing for NYE in their cities? Anyone traveling somewhere else?
Last year we were in Berlin, which was great, and cold, but great. I love Berlin and there is SO MUCH to do and see.
This year we had an opportunity to go to Warsaw with friends, and I have never been so that would have been awesome, but we couldnt really afford it. So we're kind of stuck in Amsterdam with nowhere to go (well, there are some choices but nothing to be too excited about).

Student Universe is having some great roundtrip flight deals until March next year. Of course, the deals are for certain days, blah de blah. But these prices are phenomenal.
Sample Student Airfares Washington - New York $99 New York - Boston $99 Chicago - Washington $148 Los Angeles - New York $212 Boston - San Juan $283 New York - Osaka $605 Seattle - Melbourne $1248 New York - London $181 Washington - London $192 Boston - London $192 Washington - Amsterdam $209 Minneapolis - Paris $262 Portland, Oregon - Frankfurt $346 San Francisco - Zurich $356 Pittsburgh - New York $99 Minneapolis - Chicago $135 Indianapolis - Washington $137 Seattle - New York $212 Charlotte - San Francisco $238 Washington - Honolulu $548 I bought my ticket from them when i went to Amsterdam this summer and it was $400 cheaper than the usual bargain flight shops. Their service is really excellent and the hassle isn't really there. Of course you'll need proof that you are either student or faculty. But regardless, it's great. :)

My name is Tab. I'm 21. I've lived in Japan, and I hop over the border to Mexico every now and then. It always amuses me when travel guides say to wear khakis and nice shirts so you don't attract too much attention when traveling, but, well, that tip is trumped by the fact that up until recently, I had locs down my back, besides just being black.
I was definitely a fond target for searches and drug-sniffing dogs (when I was arriving) at Tokyo International.
All in all, while I got some stares and some joking about my hair, I felt at ease with general interaction.
I want to go to Amsterdam to visit my uncle, and branch out to some major European travel from there. I also want to take a freighter trip somewhere.
Favorite place: A back alley yakkitori stand in Yokosuka. You eat as much as want, and you put your sticks in a little cubby. Once you're done, you give your sticks to the vendor, and he charges you something like 50 yen per stick. Great when traipsinig around town.
There's also a shrine in Asakusa, an older section of Tokyo, that has tons and tons of pigeons that like to attack schoolgirls and anyone with food.
And a little grill stand up on Mt. Fuji, at the 5th station. The corn is 500 yen per ear, but great.
How are all of you at acquiring languages?

Hey everyone.
Thought I'd say hello. I'm Carmen, 20/f, half black half puerto-rican.
These are the places (outside of the US) that I've traveled to: London, Puerto Rico, and Italy (Rome, Florence, Venice).
I did not really experience any problems on any of these trips. In a month I will be leaving to study in Prague for 4 months, followed by a month of traveling to Bosnia, Spain, Nice, Paris, and Amsterdam (tentative plans). I am a bit anxious about living in Central Europe because I hear they often stare at people of color. Not in a bad way, just in an interested way. I am taking a Central European Film class and the culture really interests me, so different from America.
Anyone been to Prague or other parts of Central Europe?

Wow, I'm so glad that you started this community. I hope many people join so that we can have the full benefit of others' experiences. Because on more than a few occasions, a white person will come back from somewhere, usually in Europe and sometimes in Asia, and remark to me about "how friendly everyone is!" and I'm always left to wonder really, do you think they'd be so friendly to me? Anyway, best of luck on your community. I hope it helps a lot of people. un beso.

Thanks for joining. As a sort of ice-breaker:
Pick any city or place you've visited. Choose a very nostalgic spot in that place that you think someone should visit. Say why. (Mind you, the spot can be a grassy area under a bridge or a section of the Louvre...)
Mine: In Kyoto there's this narrow marketplace downtown tucked away between the tall buildings of the shopping district and it's around a 100 meters long. What makes it so awesome is the fact that there a stained glass roof over it spanning the length of the market coloring the area soft orange and red and giving it a cozy aura. You'll mainly find housewives there buying wares and bargaining for the best prices in shitaki mushrooms and live octopus.
so yeah. SHARE!
