Stories of Mountain Life 43: The Day I Waited for Mother

    < This series is
a fictional story based on a family that actually lived in a mountain village after the war. >

That was before Yuki-chan started elementary school.
Her younger brother, Bun-chan, had not been born yet.

By the time the spring rice planting was finished,
the rice harvested last autumn was running low,
and they had to go to the store to buy more rice.

However, the modest general store in this village did not stock rice.

There was no choice but to walk along the mountain path to buy it far away.
It was a difficult task, leaving early in the morning and returning in the evening carrying heavy rice on one's back.
Back when there were no forest roads for cars, that was the only way.

    Usually, Father would go.
But Father, a carpenter, was very busy with a job building a new house.

So, it was decided that Mother would go instead.

This family had no grandfather or grandmother.
Since it was a life of just the three of them,
Father took little Yuki-chan to his workplace.

    At Father's workplace,
Yuki-chan quietly watched Father use the plane.

When Father would plane a thick piece of wood with a 'whoosh',
thin, fluffy wood shavings, looking just like bonito flakes,
would dance into the air and spread out at their feet.

The fragrant scent of cedar and cypress, and the 'whoosh, whoosh' sound Father made,
felt just like a lullaby to Yuki-chan.

At noon, they sat on a thick log
and ate a large bento and a small bento side by side.

Having worked hard until evening, the two of them,
at Father's words, 'Mother should be coming home soon,'
tidied up and went to the bridge with the mailbox to meet Mother.

The bridge that Yuki-chan didn't usually cross and the road beyond it stretched into the twilight.
Mother would come home along that road!

    Yuki-chan couldn't wait,
looking up at Father's face and jumping up and down.

But even as it grew dark, Mother was nowhere to be seen.
    'Father...'
    'Yeah, she's a bit late.'

As the darkness deepened, the sound of the water grew louder.

    'Mother... Mother!'
    Yuki-chan finally started to cry.

    'Stop sniffling!'
    Father barked.
Yuki-chan swallowed her tears with a hiccup.

All around, only the sound of the water continued.

Father was also a little anxious.
Mother had gone to Manchuria during the war to support the pioneer groups, but
she was someone who had returned safely just before the end of the war.
Because it was Mother, Father kept telling himself that nothing unusual would happen, that she would be fine.

Even the sound of the water seemed to darken, and a moment passed.

    That was when it happened.
Beyond the bridge, in the shadow of the distant mountains, a faint, flickering light could be seen.

    “Hey!”
Father cupped his hands to his mouth and called out loudly.

    “Hey!”
After a short pause, Mother’s voice came back in reply.
The light of a small flashlight appeared and disappeared as it drew closer.

Father took Yuki-chan by the hand, crossed the bridge, and went to meet Mother.
