In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and medicinal cooking (known as “Yakuzen” in Japanese), understanding “Qi, Blood, and Body Fluids” is essential!
Even a basic understanding of these three elements can greatly deepen your knowledge of Yakuzen.

Today, let’s begin with the first one—
What is “Qi”?

“Qi” (pronounced “chee”) is an invisible life force or energy that flows throughout the body.
Though you can’t see it, Qi plays a vital role in keeping us healthy and energized.

For example:
• If you’re feeling low or unmotivated → You may be lacking Qi.
• If you get tired easily or have lingering swelling → Qi might not be flowing smoothly.

Qi helps power our bodies, keeps us warm from the inside, supports thinking and mental clarity, and protects us from illnesses like colds and other infections.

⸻

So, what does Qi do in the body?

Qi has several important functions:
• It gives your body energy and vitality.
• It helps digest and absorb food properly, delivering nutrients to your organs and cells.
• It warms the body from the inside.
• It defends the body from harmful outside influences like bacteria and viruses.

⸻

What happens when Qi is low?

When your Qi is lacking, you may start to experience symptoms like:
• Feeling tired all the time
• Always feeling sleepy
• Catching colds easily
• Digestive issues or stomach discomfort

In other words, your body can’t perform at its best when it doesn’t have enough Qi.

⸻

How does Yakuzen help support Qi?

In medicinal cooking, we support and boost Qi with:
• Nourishing meals and warm soups
• Foods that replenish Qi, such as rice, cabbage, yam, and chicken
• Foods that help Qi flow more smoothly, like soba (buckwheat noodles), mandarin oranges, and yuzu citrus

By including these ingredients, Yakuzen helps restore Qi flow and balance, supporting your overall well-being.

⸻

Think of it this way…

Qi is like electricity flowing through your body.
Without electricity, trains don’t run, and TVs won’t turn on—right?

In the same way, without Qi, the body’s “switches” won’t turn on.
Qi is the essential energy that keeps us feeling alive, healthy, and vibrant every day.
