9:26 pm - Hiberno-English

I am an undergraduate linguistics student at McGill University, and I'm looking for participants for a study on Irish English (Hiberno-English). You can see the survey here. It only takes a few minutes to fill out and you can have fun laughing at my bad poetry! The only requirement is that you grew up in (or are growing up) in Ireland. Thanks for your help!

4:04 pm - license plate?
|

feachador
|
So, I'm buying a Mini Cooper this weekend, and it's got a Euro plate on the front. Ga doesn't require front plates, so I can put anything I want on there. I found a site where I can get an Irish Europlate, that says whatever I want, but I can't think of anything I want it to *say*. I was thinking something fun and driving like, in Gaelic. Any suggestions?
Thanks!
Oh, here's the car, in case you're curious.

I don't want this to get into a debate over the politics associated with the phrase but I was wondering if the phrase Tiocfaidh ár lá would be different in Gaidhlig?
Thanks in advance.

10:39 am - Help with a translation for a Harry Potter fanfic?
|

almond_joyz
|
Hi, I'm writing a Harry Potter fanfiction and Seamus Finnigan slips into his native tongue. I need someone to translate two sentences for me. I had a friend who was going to do it for me, but he hasn't got back to me and I need to have this done by Friday. Sentence one... "You'll get Splinched for sure, Harry. I don't think Ginny will appreciate you losing her favourite bits, if you know what I mean." Sentence two... "I bet I can go home and get back here before he does." I realize that Splinched is a word that JKRowling made up, so you can leave it as such. My friend was going to translate it for idiom and gist using an Ulster dialect but I'll take whatever I can get at this point. Thank you!

Greetings,
I was playing an online game with some friends last night and one of them received a message from another player that he couldn't understand. It took me a bit, but I recognized it as Irish Gaelic. Once upon a time I studied Gaeilge, but that was quite a long time ago. The message was as follows:
Dia dhuit is cen chaoi a bhfuil tu? Is deas an rud e fhail amach go bhfuil duine eile on eireann ag imirt an chluiche seo...a reidh leis an troid!.
I recognize the first line as, more or less, "Greetings, how are you?"
The rest I muddled thru with online dictionaries as well as my old book from self study lessons which I still own. I am thoroughly frustrated now, and hopefully you guys can lend a hand.
My best efforts leave me with something about "the nice thing to find out is that another Irish person is playing this game..." and something about being "ready for the fight".
Am I close?? ^_^ I hope someone can help. I would love to know how far off the mark I am, LOL.
Thanks in advance!

Hi all,
I am making another stab at learning Irish -- tried back in high school (on my own) but failed miserably -- but alas, my Irish dictionary is back in Lethbridge and my mother refuses to send it (or my box of art that I needed to apply to art school, which I now can not *grumble*). And I'm arse with learning other languages so it's going slow!!!
In the meantime, I am wondering if someone could please translate the following for me into the language:
Death awaits the bird with the broken wing, who no one could love.
Much appreciated if someone could!

Dia dhuit! Conas ata tu? Bhi me ag scriobh ursceal teideal Black Laces. Ta se ar an amazon.com here

It's written in English, but there is a bit of gaelige in it!
Noel O’Donoghue is a gaelic footballer with a bright future ahead of him; he’s engaged to a beautiful woman, playing football for his county and has a stake in his father’s hotel to look forward to. But when Sean Roughty returns from Dublin, an old childhood friendship is rekindled and Noel finds himself developing dangerous feelings for Sean. When Noel’s teammate, the boorish Hog Hickey, decides to launch a drink-induced, homophobic attack on Sean Roughty, his perfect life of popularity and promise quickly dissolves into one of alienation and small town paranoia.

11:19 am - Dictionary question
|

cresida
|
I have a rather simple (I hope) question about a dictionary for a beginner. I'm about to start an Irish course (my first), and I'm looking for an affordable English-Irish/Irish-English pocket dictionary. Right now I'm considering either the Collins Gem Irish Dictionary or the Irish-English/English-Irish Easy Reference Dictionary by the Educational Company of Ireland.
The biggest reason I'm asking is because I'm going to have to order online, as none of the booksellers near me carry an English-Irish/Irish-English dictionary. Therefore, as I can't inspect them myself, I was hoping that someone else may have had occasion to use one of these, and can make recommendations for or against.
Thanks in advance!

Hallo!
I'm currently learning Scots gaelic with Sabhal Mor Ostaig on their distance learning course (a great course if anyone's interested). And was wondering if there are any gaelic learners in Manchester or Stockport? I have discovered a Comunn Na Gaidhlig night in Gatley on a Tuesday night and wanted to spread the word as it seems to be quite poorly publicised. I am planning to go for the first time in a couple of weeks if anyone wants to come.
