Motivation

--tokenizer-backend fastokens cannot serve DeepSeek-V4.1 with the fastokens version SGLang currently allows, and the official images do not ship fastokens at all.

The current pin breaks DeepSeek-V4.1. The fastokens extra is pinned to >=0.1.1,<0.2.0, so installs resolve to 0.1.2. That release has two bugs:

  • It counts vocab_size as base vocab plus added tokens. Added tokens whose ids sit inside the base vocab are counted twice.
  • decode raises on unknown ids. HF tokenizers returns "".

The DeepSeek-V4.1 tokenizer has 128000 BPE tokens and 1283 added tokens. Three of the added tokens use ids 0-2. So with the fastokens backend, len(tokenizer) is 129283 instead of 129280. At model init, the engram token map (build_compressed_token_map) decodes every id in range(len(tokenizer)). It fails on id 129280:

ValueError: decode error: unknown token ID: 129280

Both bugs are fixed upstream in fastokens 0.3.2 (crusoecloud/fastokens#55, crusoecloud/fastokens#65).

fastokens is not in the image. The extra is only pulled in by test, not by all. The Docker images install .[all], so a deployment has to pip install fastokens at startup before it can use the backend. The Rust frontends already link fastokens through dynamo-tokenizers.

Why it matters. The chat endpoint re-encodes the whole conversation on every turn. For agentic traces that is 300k-600k tokens per request. HF tokenizers encodes on one thread at about 1.8 us/token on Grace, so encoding takes about 0.6 s. That time is on the TTFT path and it blocks the API server event loop.

Modifications

  • python/pyproject.toml: require fastokens>=0.3.2 (lower bound only, like most dependencies here).
  • python/pyproject.toml: add sglang[fastokens] to the all extra, so images built from .[all] include it. The default --tokenizer-backend stays huggingface.

Accuracy Tests

All checks use the DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash tokenizer with fastokens 0.3.2 and 0.3.3, patched into transformers the same way --tokenizer-backend fastokens does it.

  • len(tokenizer) is 129280, the same as HF. Decoding id 129280 returns "".
  • Decoding each id in range(len(tokenizer)) one at a time, as the engram map does, gives the same text as HF for every id.
  • Encoding rendered DeepSeek-V4.1 agentic chat prompts of 55k, 340k and 557k tokens gives ids identical to HF.
  • End to end: GB300 TP4 DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash starts with --tokenizer-backend fastokens and fastokens 0.3.2. Model init, including the engram map, completes, and AgentX warmup and measured requests run without errors. With 0.1.2 the same launch fails at init with the error above.
  • The existing test_hf_transformers_fastokens.py uses fastokens._compat._TokenizerShim and patch_transformers. Both are still present in 0.3.2 and 0.3.3.

Speed Tests and Profiling

Encode time (DeepSeek-V4.1 tokenizer, rendered agentic chat prompts, single call, CPU):

prompt tokens HF tokenizers fastokens 0.3.2
55k 0.044 s 0.004 s
340k 0.320 s 0.017 s
557k 0.498 s 0.029 s

Serving. GB300 TP4, DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash, DSpark speculative decoding, AgentX coding traces at concurrency 1, 30-minute measured window. Same image and flags; the only difference is --tokenizer-backend (fastokens 0.3.2 installed).

huggingface fastokens
TTFT p50 0.811 s 0.289 s
TTFT p90 1.490 s 1.398 s
completed requests 197 202
failed requests 0 0
TPOT p50 1.574 ms 1.573 ms
server prefix cache hit rate 0.961 0.960

Decode speed is unchanged. The remaining TTFT is prefill compute (about 0.23 s).

Latest PR Test (Base): 🚫 Run #38200234622
Latest PR Test (Extra): ❌ Run #38200234581
Latest PR Test (AMD ROCm 10): ✅ Run #38200234720

Root cause: the fastokens extra was pinned to <0.2.0 when the backend was
added, so installs resolve to 0.1.2. That release counts vocab_size as base
vocab plus added tokens, double-counting added tokens whose ids sit inside the
base vocab, and raises on unknown ids in decode. DeepSeek-V4.1 has three such
tokens (ids 0-2), so with --tokenizer-backend fastokens len(tokenizer) is
129283 instead of 129280, and the engram token map built at model init calls
decode on id 129280 and fails with "unknown token ID: 129280". The extra is
also not part of "all", so the official images do not contain fastokens.

Fix: require fastokens>=0.3.2, the first release with both fixes
(crusoecloud/fastokens#55, sgl-project#65), and add sglang[fastokens] to the all extra.
The default tokenizer backend stays huggingface.

Validation: on the DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash tokenizer, fastokens 0.3.2 and 0.3.3
report len 129280, decode id 129280 to "", and match HF decode on every id;
encodes of 50k-560k token agentic prompts match HF exactly. GB300 TP4
AgentX c1 with fastokens on the chat encode path: TTFT p50 0.81 s -> 0.29 s.

Picks up the latest main to refresh CI after unrelated failures: a flaky test (https://github.com/sgl-project/sglang/actions/runs/37786460812/job/113351588646) and a GitHub API 502 in a health check (https://github.com/sgl-project/sglang/actions/runs/37786460812/job/113415779613).

[by Claude Code] I've started babysitting the NVIDIA CI of this PR. I'll check it every 30 minutes until all NV pipelines pass. If a relevant job fails, I may rerun it, merge the latest main into this branch, push a small test-only fix, or post a note here.

Anyone can stop me at any time: just post a comment asking me to stop (for example, stop babysitting). I'll stop at my next check, within 30 minutes, and take no further action on this PR.

This change is important for perf. TTFT, mean: 498 → 125 ms at concurrency 4, 501 → 112 ms at 8, 738 → 244 ms at 16. Total throughput +6.5% at concurrency 4. cc @Oasis-Git

DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash on 4×GB300 (TP4/EP4, DSpark), AgentX(393 traces, about 186K input tokens per turn on average). The only change between the two runs is --tokenizer-backend fastokens (fastokens 0.3.3); each run is a full 1-hour window.

[by Claude Code] The relevant CI failure (https://github.com/sgl-project/sglang/actions/runs/38193715150/job/114634289012) is not caused by this PR. It is a known breakage on main, tracked in #43746. Proposed fix: #43747. CI for this PR is blocked until that is fixed.

* Bump GB300 DSV4.1 Flash SGLang to the 20261013 nightly with fastokens

The 20261013 nightly ships fastokens 0.3.2 (sgl-project/sglang#43104).
The chat endpoint re-encodes the whole 300K-600K-token conversation each
turn; HF tokenizers spends about 0.6 s of TTFT on it on Grace, fastokens

1.38 to 0.28 s, 7,314 to 7,850 tok/s/GPU; TP2 c32 183.1 to 190.9 P90
tok/s/user; DEP2 c128 81.6 to 86.6 P90 at the same throughput.

* Add a DEP2 c160 point to GB300 DSV4.1 Flash SGLang AgentX

Same settings as DEP2 c128. A local one-hour run on the 20261012 image
without fastokens gave 301,770 tok/s/GPU at 82.4 tok/s/user P90, against
278,104 at 84.2 for c128 in the same setup.

* TP4 c1: admit one request and run decoder SWA bounded replay

A subagent request that arrives during a decode now waits instead of
stalling that decode with its prefill. Local one-hour runs on the 20261013
image with fastokens: 625.1 to 654.4 tok/s/user P90 at 7,848 tok/s/GPU,
TTFT p50/p90 0.24/0.28 to 0.23/0.27 s; p99 0.97 to 1.13 s.

* Move to the 20261014 nightly and run bounded replay at DEP2

The 20261014 image allows decoder SWA bounded replay with DP attention
(sgl-project/sglang#43812). Local one-hour DEP2 c128 runs with fastokens:
271,676 tok/s/GPU at 86.6 P90 (20261013) to 280,752 at 88.5 (20261014) to
283,868 at 91.3 with bounded replay; TTFT p90 3.43 to 2.62 s.

* Add DEP2 c160 with the HuggingFace tokenizer

At c160, fastokens admits short subagent prefills faster and
shortest-prefill-first then holds back long main-agent turns. Local
one-hour c160 runs: 258,332 tok/s/GPU at 85.8 P90 with fastokens
(20261013) against 296,603 at 79.2 (20261012) and 287,471 at 78.2
(20261013) with the HuggingFace tokenizer.

* Run DEP2 c160 with a prefill-decode interval of 8

* Correct the fastokens version in the changelog entry [skip-sweep]

The 20261014 image ships fastokens 0.3.4; sgl-project/sglang#43104 only
sets the fastokens>=0.3.2 floor. Wording only: the recipe, master config

* [XPU] Fix FP8 KV cache support for ModelOpt quantized models (e.g. Llama-3.3-70B-FP8)

* [XPU] Add MXFP4 W4A16 MoE inference support for Intel Xe2 (GPT-OSS)

Enable MXFP4 quantized inference on XPU using the native Xe2 SYCL
fused_experts kernel (sgl-kernel-xpu PR#184).

- quantization/__init__.py: register mxfp4 quantization method for XPU
- quantization/fp4_utils.py: broaden flashinfer import exception to avoid
  crash on XPU where flashinfer is unavailable
- quantization/mxfp4.py:
  - align intermediate size to 64 for XPU (create_weights)
  - skip CPU dequant on XPU; leave weights as packed uint8 in VRAM
    (process_weights_after_loading)
  - add XPU dispatch in apply(): call sgl_kernel.fused_experts with
    use_mxfp4_w4a16=True; convert UE8M0 uint8 scales to float32 via
    exp2(uint8 - 127); default gemm1_alpha=1.702 / gemm1_limit=7.0 to
    select activation_type=2 (ACT_SWIGLU_GPT_OSS, interleaved weight
    layout required by GPT-OSS MXFP4 checkpoints)
- models/gpt_oss.py: replace hardcoded .cuda() with .to(get_device())
  in weight loading to support XPU

* [XPU] Improvement for fp4 and fp8

 Optimize FP8 KV cache: lazy mirror buffer to avoid full cast per step
 Fix MXFP4 MoE: read activation/gemm1 params from model config instead of GPT-OSS hardcoded values

* Remove WA for FP8 KV cache

* Add analyze support for XPU

* [Intel][XPU] Allow mamba extra_buffer radix cache strategy on XPU (#9)
