Tesla's sports car

The Tesla Roadster was the American automaker’s first vehicle program.

During its first production run between 2008 and 2012, it motivated automakers to launch several of their own electric vehicle program – virtually starting an electric vehicle revolution.

In 2017, Tesla unveiled a new generation of the electric sports car to enter production in 2020. Here are all the details.

Are Tesla’s claims for its new ‘flying’ Roadster real, or is it just full of cold gas?

Tesla has finally re-unveiled its next-generation Roadster, originally unveiled in quite different form back in 2017. So since I did a technical breakdown of how it would work last time, I thought I’d give a quick update with what we know about the new version.

(Update: Now that various media videos are out showing a tour of the car, we’re updating this article with answers to some of the questions that were not answered in the product demo).

Tesla is unveiling the new Roadster for real this time, promise

Tesla Roadster unveiling

Tesla says it will finally stream its next-generation Roadster event this Thursday, October 15, at 7:55 pm Central, two weeks after it was supposed to happen.

It’s the latest date in a long list of them. Tesla first showed the Roadster in November 2017 and promised production in 2020. Nearly nine years later, it hasn’t delivered a single one.

Tesla patents ‘Electric Fan Car’ with 4 ducted fans ahead of Roadster reveal

Tesla fan car patent

Tesla was just granted a patent for an “Electric Fan Car,” a system that uses four electric ducted fans in the rear diffuser to suck the car down to the road at any speed. The car in the drawings is a Model S, which Tesla stopped building in April.

It’s Tesla’s second fan car patent in just over a year, and it arrives two weeks before the company’s latest attempt at a Roadster demo.

Tesla’s two week notice, Volvo’s autonomous milestone, and fun with LEGO

On today’s completely predictable episode of Quick Charge, Tesla CEO Elon Musk says the weather looks like it’ll be too rough to show off his new “flying” Roadster 2.0 on October 1st, so he’s pushing the reveal back another two weeks – but after 9 years of moving goal posts and broken promises, what’s a few more weeks?

Update 9/28: Tesla has since confirmed that it’s rescheduling the Roadster event to October 15, citing “severe conditions predicted.” We have more on the two-week delay here.

Tesla is warning guests invited to its October 1 Roadster event that the long-delayed demo could get pushed back again, and this time it’s the weather.

In an email to invitees, Tesla says the event “must be held outdoors” and may need to be rescheduled. And the forecast for central Texas on Thursday calls for an 82% chance of rain, with thunderstorms.

Tesla Roadster wing

A new Tesla patent application describes a two-piece active rear wing that hides flush in the bodywork and can produce up to 700 kg of downforce once deployed. The car in the drawings looks a lot like the next-generation Tesla Roadster.

The USPTO published the filing on September 24, a week before the Roadster unveiling Tesla has scheduled for October 1 in Texas.

Tesla’s new Roadster teaser hints at a ‘Cyber’ redesign it doesn’t need

Concept render of a Cyber-style Tesla Roadster with Roadster badging, rear view

Tesla will finally unveil its new Roadster on October 1, more than eight years after it first showed the car in 2017. And a teaser this weekend suggests the production version is getting Tesla’s “Cyber” design treatment.

The teaser shows SpaceX cold gas thrusters firing out the back, and Elon Musk has promised “radical design changes.” But the Roadster never needed a redesign. It needed to ship.

Ex-Tesla president: Roadster delay is about getting closer to SpaceX ahead of merger

A former Tesla president says the endlessly delayed next-generation Roadster is being held up by SpaceX “hovering” technology — and that the project is really about pulling Tesla and SpaceX closer together.

Jon McNeill, Tesla’s president from 2015 to 2018 and now co-founder of VistaShares and CEO of DVx Ventures, made the comments as Tesla preps a long-promised Roadster demo nearly nine years after the car was first unveiled.

Tesla design chief says new Roadster coming ‘very soon’ — sure

Tesla Roadster

Tesla’s chief designer says the new Roadster is coming “very soon.” We are talking about the same car Tesla revealed in 2017 and promised to build by 2020.

Franz von Holzhausen said it on the latest episode of Jay Leno’s Garage. When Leno pressed him on it, he doubled down: “very soon.” Leno’s deadpan reply, “10 years… just shy of 10 years,” said the rest.

Musk says Tesla to ‘open source’ Model S and X, but prior release makes us skeptical

New Tesla Model S and Model X price

Elon Musk says Tesla plans to “open source” the Model S and Model X, and he’s pointing to the original Roadster as the template.

The problem is Tesla’s Roadster release amounted to eight files on GitHub plus five document packages behind a login, with no open-source license attached to any of it.
