astrology / compatibility project
If any of you would be interested in volunteering as a participant in a research project I am
doing on the use of astrological information to determine potential for compatibility please
send me a note. I would greatly appreciate your help. The "workload" on your end is very
minimal, consisting of providing me with your birth date, time and location; your Myers - Briggs
personality test results, and interacting with people having specific birth-dates; and reporting
back the results on your interactions via a series of questions and short answers.

2007: Year of the Pig!! New merch... And new member.
Hello,

I have just joined this community .
If you want to know a bit more about me, just visit my profile: I am an artist.
I actually have started a line of merchandise featuring the Pig ( the Pig being particularly important for me since I am of this sign) and thought of posting a link to it, since it may be of interest for members of this community. So here it is:

2007: Year of the Pig!!

I hope this is appropriate to post this here ( I didn't see anything against it in the userinfo page).
Thank you and I hope you enjoy it

All the best,

Nathalie.

Year of the Metal Boar here (intro post)
Hello everyone out there. I see the community isn't exactly hopping, but I wanted to join anyway. I became interested in Chinese zodiac a long time ago. In the western zodiac I am a libra and I know it sounds sort of dumb, but I was sort of jaded because MY signs was the only inanimate sign in the zodiac and when I discovered there was another one I was very interested, and genuinely felt the Chinese zodiac was a lot more thourough. It isn't just the day and month that matters, but everything down to the minute and even where you were born. It's a lot more complicated, which makes me feel it is more personalized. I was born in 1971 in Frankfurt Germany, and always on the look out for other boars and even better if they're metal boars (no offense to you other kinds of boars out there of course). I forget if I became interested in collecting pigs/boars before or after I discovred the Chinese zodiac, but I am a very picky collector, not just ANY boar figure or peice of jewelry will do. It has to be up to standards AND on top of that, be small enough not to take up too much space. I currently bought a tiny metal boar (I think it's made of pewter, even though it's called a brass boar in the discription) off ebay, and can't wait to put him next to my other very small collection. It's my way of honoring the boar. So anyway, hello to you all (passes around cookies and milk)

Another One for the Bunch
Mornin' all. I'm a relative newbie to chinese astrology, and don't really know all the in's and out's to this year, month, hour information. I always believed that was just fill-in tidbits about the animal - y'know, "So-and-so was born September 20, his blood type is AB+," etc.

Can anyone explain to me what the correlations between year, month, and hour mean? I'm a Water Monkey, in the Tiger month and in the Tiger hour.

Much obliged.

Year of the Dog - 2006
From: "The Complete Book of Chinese Horoscopes" by Lori Reid
CHINESE HOROSCOPE - YEAR 2006

The Year of the Dog: 29 Jan. 2006 - 17 Feb. 2007
Environmental issues and humanitarian schemes come to the forefront in Dog years. Idealism, a key Dog concept, opens the way for grand philanthropic gestures. Conservation, animal welfare, and civil liberties all come under the aegis of the Year of the Dog. Politically, governments should review their defence budgets and give greater priority to internal security. On the domestic front, the sign of the Dog is linked to property, and we are advised to look after our personal effects and to upgrade our burglar alarm systems. The focus in the year is on family life. Marriage in the Year of the Dog brings happiness and good fortune.

Months and Hours
I have a book that gives a chart of the animals that go with each month and hour. I've listed them below since it seems to be something harder to find info on.

RAT - December - 11pm - 1am
OX - January - 1am - 3am
TIGER - February - 3am - 5am
HARE - March - 5am - 7am
DRAGON - April - 7am - 9am
SNAKE - May - 9am - 11am
HORSE - June - 11am - 1pm
GOAT - July - 1pm - 3pm
MONKEY - August - 3pm - 5pm
ROOSTER - September - 5pm - 7pm
DOG - October - 7pm - 9pm
PIG - November - 9pm - 11pm

The book calls the animal for the month your inner self and the hour your secret self. Since the animal for your year is your outer self, each succeeding animal gets closer to your true self (who you really are beneath it all). The interpretations for the animals it gives for each is basically the same except for looking at the characteristics in a more personal and a less outward way.

Feel free to disagree with any of this. At least the chart should be accurate. :)

Greetings
I am new here. Western: I a Sagittarius w/ a Taurus moon and Capricorn Aquarius rising; Eastern: I was born in the year of the Fire Dragon, and am a snake ascendant. I am not entirely new to Chinese astrology. I do know enough to know that the signs are calculated by the year, solar, and the ascendant is by the hour. As far as my chinese moon goes, I have no idea, but would like to know. My time of birth is 10: 52 a.m. 12.4.76. Should anyone care to guess, feel free to do so.

I refuse to believe this place is completely dead.
Is there any particular reason the hour you were born is considered more importaint than the month?

I don't think I ever introduced myself. I'm an earth dragon rooster horse. (year, hour, month) I think...June is the horse month, right?

Hi.
I'm new here and my name is Sakami. I was born in the year of the Ox. That is all I really know. Are there any good resources that anyone can point me to. I'd like to try to do my own analysis, but I really don't know where to begin or how. Thank you for any help in advance.

Hi there! New member here.

I'm a fire Tiger and I was born in the hour of the Snake. I heard somewhere that the sign of the Tiger has something to do with wood, and I always thought it was bad for me to have fire and wood mixed together for some reason.

Does anyone know about finding out the balance of elements in yourself judging by the different aspects of you birth sign?

Also, does anyone know of a good source of information on The hour of birth mixed with the Year of birth?
Any info would be marvellous!

♥Nice to meet you all!♥

Hi
Hullo. :) I'm new here (duh). I've recently become interested in Chinese Astrology, and would like to learn more about it.

I'm a negative metal sheep, by the way.

Two questions:

1. When figuring out ones day and hour element/sign, are you supposed to convert the time to the hour it was in China or use the hour of your geographical area? For example, I was born either 12:50 or 1:50 EST on May 10th. This would be 02:50 to 03:50 on May 11th in China. It matters significantly - the difference between being born on the day of the Soil Sheep in the hour of the Metal Horse or the day of the Metal Monkey in the hour of the Soil Tiger.
2. What does it mean to have an overabundance of Fire in ones make-up? Especially if one has no water to counter-act it? This is apparently the case with me and I've yet to get a diffinitive answer.

[ EDIT ] For clarification, as amazing as it may sound, China really does only have one time zone: GMT+8 ]

Fire scorpio/rabbit
Hey I'm new to this community--I'm a fire scorpio rabbit and I'm wondering if that's a good(?) combination--it seems kind've contradicting to me. scorpio vs. rabbit --venom vs swtness.lol I think I would understand the fire/scorpio part.

Oh yeah, and I think my hour sign is the tiger. (3:17 am?)

Hello. Just joined. I was hoping for some information. I was born in September 1976, which makes me a Virgoan Fire Dragon. Is this a good or bad combination? !

~Year of the Green Rooster~
Gung hay fat choy!! =^0^= *hops around in circles*
Happy New Years! Tis the year of the Rooster! Whee! 2005!
I hope your rooms are clean, and your debts are paid. xD Remember to sweep out the back door, not the front! Keep your windows open all night to let the luck in!
Though the tradition is to keep your doors open, I live in the 21st century where creepy people walk in the front door if it's open too long. @_@;;;

Heavens bless and good luck through out the rest of the year. <3

fàn tài suì (fan4 tai4 sui4)
Hi all,

My Mother-in-Law called me from Taiwan last night and said that she and my Brother-in-Law, M, were both fàn tài suì in the upcoming year of the Wood Rooster. I am to go to the local Buddhist Temple sometime between the Lunar New Year (February 9, 2005) and the 15th day of the new year (February 23, 2005) to get ān tài suì done for them.

I didn't want to get into it on the phone with her because it was a long distance call and she was in a hurry. But I'm really curious about what fàn tài suì is and how it works.

I vaguely know that it's "bad luck" in your fàn tài suì year; that you should not go to funerals or tomb/grave sites(?) if you're not especially close to the deceased or if you can at all help it. Many people will get ān tài suì done for protection. I think there are also certain zodiac signs (carvings, charms) that you should have around you for protection and there are certain signs that you should avoid. It's always felt irreverent to me when people wear their own signs or random zodiac charms.

Please let me know if I have misunderstood anything. And please add to my list of Dos and Don'ts.

I also can't see a pattern in when fàn tài suì occurs. My </a></b></a>husband and I are both Wood Tigers (1974). The year of the Earth Tiger (1998) was apparently a fān tāi suì year for us. My Brother-in-Law M is an Earth Horse (1978) and was fàn tài suì in the year of the Water Horse (2002). M, and another Earth Horse cousin, had to turn their backs when my husband's grandmother's casket was closed and again as she was being buried. M's girlfriend who is also an Earth Horse was asked not to attend the funeral since she was sort of at odds with Grandma while she was alive anyway.

So, I thought I had it figured out that it was in your 24th year. But now I'm confused as to why the year of the Wood Rooster (2005) is also a fàn tài suì year for an Earth Horse as well... O_o

Questions (updated with answers that I have found along the way):

  1. Can anyone show me what the exact characters are? => 犯太歲

  2. What is the English translation for fàn tài suì? => No translation available; "inauspicious year" is the closest.

  3. How do you figure out what year is/will be your fàn tài suì? => It's complicated to actually figure out and it's related to the 12-sign/60-year cycle. Every 12 years, the year of your birth sign is a Main Inauspicious 犯太歲 Year. For 2005, the year of the Wood Rooster, inauspicious signs include the Rooster, the Hare, the Dog and the Rat.

  4. How do you figure out what zodiac signs will protect you? By the same token, how do you figure out what zodiac signs you should avoid? => Complex calculations; I still don't know.

  5. URLs to sites that explain it in English would be much appreciated.
