 | 11:21 am - URGENT Isaac needs a home by the end of the week!! Chicago area Hey everyone, me again, with yet another dog from my school that needs a home. This is Isaac.

He's been in our program since March. Is currently being treated for heartworm. His original foster home could no longer keep him and is now back at the school's kennel. Isaac does NOT do well in a kennel environment and needs a home to at the very least be fostered at. Due to his issues in the kennel and his heartworm positive status he will be euthanized if he does not receive a home by the end of this week. If you have any further questions ask me or contact my school. Contact information should be on their adoption page.
Again we're in the Chicago area. Sorry for the cross-posting

Hey i was wondering if anyone has or knows where i can get a "punish the deed not the breed" bracelet? I am desperately trying to tack down the orange one i bought for a fun raiser (i think) and its in my home somewhere but i was thinking of possible finding one like it or nicer.
Two years later, Penelope Loulinski the "foster dog" who came to be stabbed, purple, emaciated and small dog aggressive is a resident. she is an ESA dog and gets along fine with little dogs after training and conditioning. We are slowly on our way to service status. I wish i had named her poundcake..sigh Current Mood: calm

But Merlin, my chow-X just had his ninth birthday (more or less - when exactly it is is a mystery), and that happened to coincide with a really great picture.

Happy Birthday, darlin'. You've come a long way in those 9 years. Puppy Pic.
And, to keep things on topic: I think after 9 years we can safely say that my inlaws and mother, who thought he was going to eat my then toddlers, were wrong.

 | 02:45 pm - Lennox I thought I had posted this *months* ago, but I guess I hadn't. This was brought to my attention over the summer by a friend on a dog forum who went through a similar ordeal (but was able to have her pet returned).
Lennox was seized from his home in Belfast on May 19th for being a "pitbull type" which is illegal according to the DDA. Lennox is a loving family dog who is microchipped, DNA registered, neutered, insured, etc who's had no problems in the past.

 | 10:47 am - We're in a bit of a mess... Hi all….
We are in a really big financial mess right now. I don’t really want to get into the details, but the bottom line is this. My checking account is in the hole, and I have one day of cat food left, and one day of dog food left.
Jeff’s next pay doesn’t come until the 1st.
You see our problem. This is the first time anything like this has ever happened to us. It really sucks. I hate feeling so stuck.
To get us through I’m offering custom plaques for sale. Example:

I can make you a plaque with any dog breed silhouette and I can put whatever writing you want it only limited by the font size and available space.
For $25.00
I only need to sell 2 of these to get us through till next week. I have a paypal account.
Please comment if interested.
Thank you, ~Jen & family.
ETA: This is a piece of wood slightly larger than a standard sheet of paper. For $12 I can make a smaller one about the size of a 5x7.

 | 04:37 pm - Question! So, I go to a few conventions a year. Thus far, I haven't had the option to go to one in an area that has BSL. Honestly, I haven't wanted to either.
Today however, I was told that I should go to a convention in one of the worst BSL areas(Denver), and actually do a panel to speak against breed bans and educate. I replied, saying that I felt guilty to this day about even buying a burger there while passing through with friends. The person came back saying that the value of what I have to say is more valuable than a bit of money that would go back into the economy and government there.
So I come to you asking....
Should I? If I do everything to cut back the possibility of spending money, shall I go into one of the hearts of the beast and speak to my peers?
Also, if I do, what points should I make, what articles should I research?

 | 04:18 pm - Hello all... longtime member, first time poster. So, I've been a member of this community for a long long while. I've always been a big supporter of the whole "ban the deed, not the breed" ideal. After a long time of searching and consideration, my boyfriend and I decided to go through a local group called Hugabull based out of Vancouver, BC, and find a new addition to our family. After meeting some of their dogs and falling in love (with every one of them of couse!) we decided we wanted to bring Kane into our family. He is the perfect dog, in-house, his only problem is reactivity when he sees other dogs (he just wants to meet EVERYONE!). Obviously his original owner did not socialize him enough. He has no history of aggression, but he just gets SO excited when he sees other dogs, and to some people (with their tiny purse dogs), 50lbs of muscle lunging towards them can be a bit intimidating, even if its only because he wants to say HI!!! We're already seeing progress with him, and hope that in a few months time we will see a whole 'nother side to him. I have never met a dog so adamant about being under the covers as this guy.
(theres a decent amount of pictures under the cut, when it gets nicer out I hope to get some of him outside... but living on Vancouver Island... we're prone to a LOT of rain)

i snapped this shot of jagr the other morning when he, jade and i were coming inside from our morning walk. he waited in the doorway of the garage while i wrapped up the long leashes. he is so photogenic...
picked up a new collar for him when we began our rally class two weeks ago. previously, he wore a burnt-orange-colored hamilton collar, and i loved it! it was such a unique color, and it looked awesome on him. it was almost the exact same color as his rust markings. so pretty. we stopped at petsmart before our first class and i knew i wanted to get another hamilton collar - they are so sturdy and the hardware is really nice, too. i immediately spotted this silvery-blue color and loved it! it looks so nice on him. he's so handsome. :)

 | 07:53 pm - help a dog this Christmas Hello, pit bull fans! I come with a Christmas surprise. His name is Cornelius.
Cornelius was found yesterday evening, Christmas Eve, in fact. He was loose in the middle of a busy road and covered in gasoline and demodex mange. Naturally, we pulled over and picked him up. He is now clean and comfortable in my utility room.
Unfortunately for Cornelius, we are renters and our landlord does not allow pit bulls. This pretty much means that if we do not find a rescue for him to go to before our landlord finds out, we will be forced to take him to animal control. We don't really want to do this. Can you help? Do you know of anyone who can?
Cornelius is located in Orlando, Florida, but we are willing to travel pretty far to make sure he's safe, even set up an out of state transport. He's a very friendly, enthusiastic boy. He doesn't appear to be terribly reactive towards dogs and cats, but he has only seen them while out on walks. All he wants to do is snuggle and play with squeaky toys. He looks to be about 8 months old and is unaltered.
Here are some pictures. Be warned, the demodex covers his entire body. He seems in good spirits in spite of how itchy and uncomfortable he is!( look under here for an itchy dogCollapse )
this will be cross posted, so sorry if you see it more than once. Feel free to post his story wherever you please

 | 08:15 pm - Myrlhin
After a four-month-long battle with lymphoma (cancer), Myrl has been put to sleep.
He had been doing very well, tolerating chemotherapy better than we hoped, but we all knew that this day was inevitable. His health had been slowly declining ever since the cancer moved from his lymph system and into his bone marrow. He was living on borrowed time.
Last night walking became exceedingly difficult and sometime in the wee morning hours the light and life left his eyes. He left us at 8:50a HST this morning, surrounded by his loved ones and his favourite vet.
I post this not to share my sadness, but to share his life. He was a wonderful companion; intelligent, loving, gentle, full of joy and fun. He was a great student; always willing to learn and eager to please. He was also a fantastic teacher, teaching me more about dogs in his seven years on this earth than any other single being.

 | 03:07 pm - Shelter Under Water Kentucky has not had good luck in the past year with weather. We had both a devastating wind storm and ice storm in the past 12 months and just yesterday we had record breaking rainfall. Much of Louisville was flooded-- including our metro animal shelter.
My sister used to work for Metro and when she realized how much flooding was happening she rushed out to help the evacuation effort. I'll link the 2 news articles I've found but basically they were overwhelmed and understaffed in this giant move. At least 10 kittens died and one dog. Now they've begun the task of re-identifying the animals and cleaning up the shelter. If you can any money that you can donate to our shelter, please do. This was a tragedy that no one expected-- we're normally in a drought this time of year!

 | 05:42 pm - Pitbull Thrown Off Bridge I'm ashamed to say that this actually happened in my home town. Thank God there were firefighters near by and good people in Joe's Crab Shack.
A day after plummeting 80 feet from the Clark Memorial Bridge into the Ohio River, “Sunny” the pit bull showed no signs of distress Monday apart from a swollen belly.
A white Chevy Malibu had stopped on the bridge in the southbound lanes, moments before Sunny's plunge, said Kelsey Westbrook, the Joe's Crab Shack server who took in the pooch and named her.
Sunny's enlarged belly and protuberant nipples suggest she recently gave birth, she added.
"A person threw her over,” the University of Louisville senior said, “I guess somebody used her to breed and didn't want to take care of her anymore.”
Workers at Joe's Crab Shack were still talking Monday about the smacking sound Sunny made when she belly flopped onto the water after 4 p.m.
“It sounded like something hitting a wall,” restaurant server Bradley Cooper, 22, said of the noise that turned heads. “It was very, very loud.”

 | 12:43 pm Well my friends, its that time of year again. Blogathon time! What is blogathon you ask? Its a twenty-four hour fundraiser where I stay up all day and night, blogging every half hour as proof and my friends and family sponsor me by donating to my favorite charity. For more information about the actual event check out www.blogathon.org . This year, as in past years, I have chosen to blog on the behalf of Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. Best Friends is a private no-kill shelter located in rural Utah. They specialize in second chances for animals with severe health and behavioral problems. They rehabilitate animals that other people and shelters had deemed irreparable or those animals that simply ran out of time at other rescues. In recent years they have received much media attention due to their involvement in the rehabilitation of the Michael Vick pitbulls as well as their television show on the National Geographic channel. For further information about Best Friend Animal Sanctuary, including their mission statement, please visit www.bestfriends.org . To sponsor me follow this link -> http://www.blogathon.org/pledge.php?blogid=57 . It will take you to a sign up page , where you sign up to be a sponsor (takes less that 30 seconds) and then it will redirect you to my page where you can then make a pledge. After I have completed the blogathon, an email will be sent with directions on how to donate directly to Best Friends, via check or credit card that way you are assured your donation is making it to our furry friends.
Anyone who sponsors me for $10+ dollars will be put into a raffle to win one of three amazon.com gift certificates!

 | 12:55 pm - Car seat cover So, for those of you with dogs that, for some reason, leave 90% of their already very minimal fur on the backseat of your car, have you finally invested in a car seat cover?
We have a lease vehicle that we're trying to keep pretty clean in case we decide not to buy it at the end of the lease. My car is mostly the animal transport because it's owned, but we're taking my girlfriend's car (the lease car) on vacation this summer because it's bigger so we want to get a seat cover so the dog doesn't get it filthy.
Suggestions?

 | 04:00 pm - Hi.
Hi, my name is Sarah, and I joined this club because I have been frusterated by breedists for years. My favorite kind of dog, the Pit Bull Terrier has been banned in Denver where I live. (http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/4467849/detail.html)
Also, on a different note, my Austrailian Cattle Dog has been the center of a rarer kind of breedism that makes people believe that all ACD's are unfriendly, angry, and antisocial. I don't know if this is just in my area, but everyone here who doesn't know Elwood loudly makes their opinions known that they really dislike him being there. ( Read more...Collapse )

 | 03:09 pm - A Dog's Purpose My sis emailed me this, and I thought you guys might also enjoy reading it:
A Dog's Purpose (from a 6-year old).
Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolf hound named Belker. The dog's owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and their little boy Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle.
I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.
As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience.
The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away.
The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker's Death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives. Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, 'I know why.'
Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation.
He said, 'People are born so that they can learn how to live a good Life -- like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?' The Six-year-old continued, 'Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long.'
Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly.
Remember, if a dog was the teacher you would learn things like:
When loved ones come home, always run to greet them. Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride. Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure Ecstasy.. Take naps. Current Mood: tired

 | 11:29 am - New survey indicates most dogs don't bite I've been saying this for years: Most dogs don't bite and when they do it's generally not severe. Dog bites are just not a statistically significant safety hazard.
Well, now there's some statistical evidence supporting this claim. The Coalition for Living Safely with Dogs has produced data from a year-long survey on dog bites in Colorado. I've been eagerly awaiting the results of this survey and now it's finally available.
The survey included 17 regions of Colorado and covered 50% of the human and dog population in the state.
The results include: - more than 100 breeds bit during the study period - but only 1 out of 350 dogs bit (<1/3 of 1%) - most of the bites were minor - most victims are children, particularly young males, left alone with dogs - the dogs were often running loose, male and between the ages of 1-4.
The survey includes breed information and, quite frankly, the results aren't surprising. Labs topped out as the number 1 biters followed by pit bulls, german shepherds and rottweilers. All four are very popular breeds of dogs.
Still the take home point is simple: Most dogs don't bite. Breed is irrelevant in dog bites - it's a red herring to the real problem of ignorance.
Reducing dog bites can be achieved through proper child-dog supervision, education on how to interrupt a dog fight (how most adults were bitten), and education on how to keep a dog properly contained (running loose increases the likelihood of an agonistic encounter between dog and human).
Dog bites will not disappear - that is the result of welcoming toothy predatory animals into our homes. But they can be reduced through common sense practices. Our dogs should be set up for success, not failure.

 | 09:16 am - Toledo Blade says "Oust Skeldon" This made my day! Tom Skeldon has been the most vocal anti pitbull crusader since the mid 80's. He is responsible for the Ohio statewide BSL and responsible for the massacre of thousands of pit bulls across the country.
The Toledo Blade calls for the ousting of Tom Skeldon
*New dog warden needed*
AS THE recent killing of a Point Place family pet makes perfectly clear, the first recommendation from the committee formed to suggest ways to improve the Lucas County dog warden's office must be a change at the top.
It is time for Tom Skeldon to go.
The Feb. 10 death by tranquilizer dart of Princess, a 10-pound Pomeranian-beagle mix that had gotten loose from its home, gave the county's dog warden a chance to show remorse, sympathy, understanding, and flexibility. Instead, after a cursory "sorry," he dug in his heels and blindly defended his department's policies.
It is through such policies, particularly a narrowly envisioned crusade against pit bulls, that Mr. Skeldon has developed a reputation as an uncaring zealot.
Enough.
Whatever he may have been 22 years ago when he became the county's chief dog officer after his uncle, Democratic icon and former county commissioner Ned Skeldon, put in a good word for him, Mr. Skeldon has lost his way and we have become convinced that it is too late now to teach an old dog warden new tricks. It appears that Mr. Skeldon has come to view his job as an entitlement rather than a public trust. He seeks (and gets) fee increases with little justification or explanation, making dog license fees in Lucas County the highest in the state. Worse, he has engaged in what looks very much like an indiscriminate pogrom against pit bull breeds, reinforcing the impression that he believes that killing problem dogs is always the best solution.
He has become so keen on protecting the public from vicious dogs - actual or perceived - that he has forgotten the equally important charge of protecting dogs, leading to a shoot-first, ask-questions-later attitude that results in tragedies such as the incident in Point Place.
In addition, he hasn't done enough to reunite lost dogs with their owners and to find families for abandoned or stray dogs. That is not likely to change under the current regime, which seems to lack what we feel is appropriate respect for the community of animal owners.
Mr. Skeldon serves at the pleasure of the county commissioners, one of whom, Tina Skeldon Wosniak, is his first cousin. Nepotism may have made Mr. Skeldon dog warden 22 years ago. It should not allow him survive the growing number of critics justifiably snapping at his heels.
