The 2012 FAMILY and garden

Well the news is out, we are expecting another sweet baby just after the first of the year.  That’s right, we will soon be a family of Nine…whoa, I still can’t wrap my head around that!  I definitely know divine intervention has been helping to grow this family, because I am not much of a planner; but I am so excited for our spontaneous little baby (he/she will fit right in to our lifestyle).

Just to get a bit of family history down, I will try to post some pictures of the past year and a half, along with some notes as to what we have done.  Starting from the most recent… we had a pretty busy summer.   We went on a Road trip to Grants Pass, Oregon to visit cousins, and along the way we stopped at Lassen Volcanic National Park, The Redwoods National Forest, took a run down the Rouge River (cliff jumping, tree swinging, and white water) along with some beach time, and good old fashioned family car fighting time to make the memories. WE HAD A BLAST!  Also this summer we bought an old, retro green, pop-out camp trailer (1978 Apache Ranger) to make camping a little more bearable with our spontaneous weekend decisions.  We’ve been down to Great Basin National Park, where we picked fruit off the trees in Fruita, and where we got a flat tire. We also made it up to Crystal Hot Springs in Honeyville, where we sat in the most mineral rich hot springs in the United States.  There, we almost took home a free kitten after seeing a sign we saw off the road, but sadly the kitty could not be found.  We also tented a few days off Timpanookee Road. We’ve gone on some fun hikes during our trips that I am happily surprised some of our younger kiddos, and even our older kiddos were able to finish due to the length and steepness of many of them.  We definitely have hardy troopers in this family, each one of them. We also got a Family Annual Zoo Pass, since it was cheaper than paying for one family entrance fee, and we’ve really enjoyed seeing the animals throughout the different seasons.

School started for four out of our six, and we’ve been busy balancing schedules.  We have P and B at home doing virtual school this year, and K and C at public brick and mortar school doing the good ol’ standard. So far we’ve been able to make it work, but I’m always a bit frazzled when I have a kindergartener that chops up the day, especially the year when I have another baby.

P was just ordained to the Aaronic Priesthood (this was also the year he broke his elbow), and K will be getting baptized in a few weeks (he is the only one who plays the piano).  I am so proud of them, and each one of my children, and for the path they are choosing to follow.  Life is so wonderful when we have knowledge and truth to help us on our journey. I feel so grateful to be their mother and to see them grow into such unique and amazing individuals. B is showing more and more independence and responsibility each day, I forget he is two years younger than P. C is learning scholastic skills so fast, I’m amazed how quickly she is learning to read. T’s personality is really starting to shine through, she has such a sense of humor but yet she’s so feminine; and Little G, what a character.  He, reminds me so much of his dad it’s eerie. Our little boy is so rough and tough on the outside, but he is such a softy on the in it makes my heart melt.

And now for the pictures…

From a Running Man, to IRONMAN!

That is what Garrek did a short while ago.  He ran the 50K Buffalo Run on Antelope Island,I had a baby, than he ran, among other things, in the St. George IRONMAN triathlon (2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride, 26.2 mile run).  He is such a great example to our family by trying to stay healthy, yet being a great husband, father, and provider.  He once said he wanted to show our kids that they could do ANYTHING; and he has shown them by getting his doctorate, running marathons and other long distance races, and now he is an IRONMAN!

Everyone needs a four year old sister

Last night when I was cleaning up after FHE, I told everyone to go and get ready for bed.  After I had been cleaning up a bit I stopped to listen to the usual boy sounds coming from downstairs, you know the knocking and thump thump sounds that indicate a good chase was going on, so I went back to work.  I then thought… where are the girls?  I didn’t hear anything coming from their corner of the house, so I went to investigate.  All was quiet until I turned the corner and saw some hair on the bathroom floor.

120  Before I even saw who’s it was, and what the damage was, I started laughing, then I heard two little giggles join in with my laughter.  Yep, Clara decided to give Talia and herself a haircut.  She said she finished Talia’s haircut, but didn’t finish hers because she changed her mind.  I took them out of the bathroom to show Daddy, but he didn’t think it was very funny, and couldn’t understand why I was still laughing.  There is something about dad’s and their daughters hair that I guess I just don’t understand, I just had to keep reminding him it will grow back.  We had them go to bed all choppy, and I took them to get it straightened out this morning.

123 127 130 132 135 137 141The hairdressers had a good laugh, and said they hadn’t seen that drastic of a chop for a while.  They couldn’t completely fix the girls hair, but I think they did the best they could.  Good thing our girls are already so cute, I don’t know if just anyone could get away with their current hairstyles.

146 154 155 157 159 Clara’s style is still long with lots of layers, and Talia’s, well, I guess she is sporting the Dorothy Hamill look.  You may also wonder why Talia has such a fat lip in the photos; well, Clara smacked her in the face with a swing yesterday (by accident).  Don’t you just love four year old sisters, they definitely leave an “impression”.

So life goes on…

Who knew I would be so bad at blogging?  Well, I could probably be the one to give anyone a heads up.  In my world of “if only” I would be the best blogger, keeping a great record of my family experiences, showing the cutest of pictures, and being the most intriguing writer to be read in the blog world.  But my “if only” world doesn’t exist, and I am a horrible blogger; but I won’t let that stop me from doing a sometimes update, because, quite frankly, I just want to do it.  Oh, and we now have more family and friends that decided they didn’t want to stay local anymore, so the updates may be a little bit more appreciated since they aren’t here to see us grow.

Well, a quick spill of the recent happenings:

Our Wonder Brig turned 8, and for most of you, that means he was baptized.  Yeah Brig!

We had an enormous harvest, and I mean BIG.  I hate to admit that I didn’t preserve as much as I wanted, but what I thought has gone to waste, my sweet honey just reminds me, has gone back into the ground to help make next year even better.  At least we had the bounty of freshness all summer long.  So long sweet candy tomatoes, see you next year!

We have another baby coming too, so please be understanding when you come over and see my house in disarray .  Well, now at least I have an excuse, and yes, I am going to use it for all it’s worth.  Truly, we are very excited for this little one, but I can’t believe I am soon to be momma of 6…whaaat?  It’s funny what things you learn along the path of life; all the dreams I had as a kid somehow don’t make the list anymore, and all the new dreams I’m making are coming true.  I sure was a naive one.

Well, here are some snaps of some things and any things.  I always carried a little camera with me, but probably for 6 months now, the batteries were dead, and I just never changed them.  So if we ever got a photo of something worth taking a photo of, it was by mere chance; yes, we have another camera that sometimes gets remembered.  So here they are:

Some backyard pictures, This is the Place Heritage Park, Top of Utah Marathon, Brig’s birthday (yes, I made the cake), and some of my family tree at the Utah State Fair.

Oh so bountiful…

I have been mentioning to many that I would post a bit on Bountiful Baskets (a food co-op) that I think is absolutely awesome.  I will just say, if this co-op is in your area, take advantage of it.  The cost for the main purchase is $15 per basket (worth about $30-$40), and the optional $7.50 for the Italian or Mexican packages , and $10 for the bread bag ($2.00 per loaf), which is 100% natural, no odd ingredients.  We have been doing this co-op for a couple of months now, and I have saved so much grocery money, because all I buy when I go to Smith’s is dairy and occasional meat (we grow rabbits, remember).  Once our garden harvest is more productive we will probably not use it as often, but right now it is perfect for us.  Here are a few pictures to show you the bounty.  Let me know if you’d like more details.

Moab in May…and other stuff

Yes, it has been half a year since I’ve updated, but I’ve been busy; this family life stuff really takes up a lot of free time.  So much has happened…oh where to start…Well, I’ll just do what I can, and hope I get a few things of interest posted.  To start off, we had an awesome trip to MOAB…yes, our annual tradition happened in May.  WE HAD A BLAST!  This year we rented an RV to help with our family fun, and fun it was.   We decided not to camp because the weather was so rainy, and I just wasn’t in the spirit of taking the tent (yes, I wimped out).  We’ve tent camped more than I can count, we needed a new adventure full of crazy RV moments.  We now have memories that include using a toilet in a bouncing, swaying, not so easy to do, closet; a brief night of the throw-ups for no reason we could think of, and a peeped on bunk that no one needs to know about (I wanted our cleaning deposit back).  Aside from those short set backs, the rest of the trip was as perfect as a family could hope for.  We went to the usual Powerhouse Dam; and what’s a visit there without the usual someone falling in.  This year it was Kurt.  He has no idea how it happened, he was being so careful, just like I told him to be.

We also did the walk downtown and let everyone pick their yearly Moab t-shirt.  We had lots of picnics (much easier in an RV), played tons in the sand, and visited Arches (I love that park).  Here are a few more picks of the trip.

Garrek ran the Salt Lake City Marathon in April, and both he and I ran the Utah Valley Marathon 2 Saturdays ago, in the pouring rain.  It was so fun to run a race with him, it technically was the second race we ran together.  When I ran the Riverton 1/2 marathon a couple of months ago, he signed up the night before so he could pace me to finish at my goal pace, what a guy;)   Now we just need to decide if we are going to run the Deseret News Marathon on Pioneer Day.  I don’t know how many more I can train for, it’s quite time consuming.  I’ve been lucky to find a great friend and running partner who helps me get the runs in before the sun comes up…thanks DG!  She also ran the UVM and qualified for Boston, for the 4th time!

We finally got a trampoline, after 2 years of promises, and the kids have almost already got our money’s worth out of it.  It is such a great energy release for the older ones, and a perfect baby pen for Talia.  We’ve had lots of fun jumping with and without sprinklers, laying on it looking at cloud shapes, and everything in between.  The only thing left, that I can think of, is sleeping out…maybe this weekend.
