
SPEAR 1 [NearSpace Launch]
SPEAR-1 (Space Power and Energy Advanced Recon) is an in-space development and test spacecraft being developed by NearSpace Launch (NSL) for the U.S. Department of Defense. The mission is funded and managed by the Operational Energy Prototyping Fund (OEPF), with the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) responsible for execution and technical oversight provided by the U.S. Space Force's Space Systems Command (SSC).
The spacecraft is intended to accelerate the maturation of technologies for national security applications. Its payloads and systems will support in-orbit testing of advanced power systems, communications technologies, space domain awareness capabilities and resilient spacecraft architectures. The mission provides an orbital testbed for technologies transitioning from research and development toward operational deployment.
SPEAR-1 is based on NSL's TROOP (Train Rapid on Orbit Payloads) platform. TROOP is a modular spacecraft platform designed for rapid integration and on-orbit testing of payloads and subsystems. The platform provides the electrical power system, battery, flight computer, communications system and other flight components, allowing mission-specific payloads to be integrated without requiring development of a complete spacecraft bus.
The spacecraft uses NSL's EyeStar S4 communications system for command, telemetry and payload data transmission. NSL also provides a payload emulator for pre-launch interface and integration testing. The company's flight heritage includes more than 1,000 systems and subsystems operating in orbit, as well as the Black Box mission-assurance system and EyeStar satellite radios.
SPEAR-1 is being developed by NearSpace Launch in cooperation with OEPF, NRL and SSC as an in-space technology demonstration mission for U.S. national security applications.
