InnoCubE [TU Berlin]

InnoCubE (Innovative CubeSat for Education) is a 3U CubeSat nanosatellite mission with the purpose to demonstrate three new technologies and for education.

The aim of the project is the technology demonstration of two innovative technologies in a small satellite, a CubeSat in 3U+ format. InnoCubE stands for Innovative Cubesat for Education. In addition to the technology demonstration, the education of students in system design and engineering, planning and operation is an integral part of the project. InnoCube is intended to operate in an orbit of 500 to 600 km altitude over its lifetime of at least one year.

The exploitation and demonstration of two technologies, each of which were the overall winners of the InnoSpace Mastersprogram in 2016 and 2017, will be pursued.

  • First is SKITH, a wireless satellite infrastructure, a development of JMU Wrzburg led by Prof. Sergio Montenegro. SKITH replaces conventional cable links with robust, fault-tolerant software that uses the 2.4 Ghz band with up to 19 dBm transmit power.
  • Second is Wall#E, a development of the TU Braunschweig under the direction of Prof. Enrico Stoll and in cooperation with Prof. Kwade from the Institute of Particle Technology. The goal is to integrate energy storage functions into the supporting structures of spacecrafts. In this way, a significant reduction in mass and volume may be achieved while maintaining the same level of performance. In conjunction with the appointment of Prof. Stoll to the TU Berlin, the exploitation of Wall#E and the InnoCube project are continued in Berlin as WallE-2-Space since April 2021.
  • Additionally, another payload is being developed primarily for educational purposes and research. This EPISODE payload consists of a software-defined global navigation satellite system (GNSS) receiver together with a laser retroreflector. In addition to the scientific objectives, the aim is also to increase university competencies. This is to be achieved by a practical, sustainable education of students as well as important technical and scientific publications.
