I’ve installed Shield Security on a few websites I maintain and have noticed slower site load speeds. I’ve tested with GTmetrix and when the plugin is enabled, I’m getting C ratings vs when I deactivate it, the ratings go up to B or A.

Is this common for this plugin?

    Hi,

These automated testing system have a purpose, but they’re not definitive – you need to examine their reports to see why they give a certain grade.

With GTMetrix it’s likely due to the AJAX call that Shield makes for its antibot system. This doesn’t impact the actual site loading, but they factor it into their scores. Again, that’s up to them, and it’s down to the user to examine the reports.

The question is – does Shield actually slow down your site? Do you notice a slowdown?

Thanks for the reply Paul. Here’s the strange thing, I’ve been running Shield on a few other sites for a couple of years and never noticed any site speed issues but recently I decided to add it to about 4 more sites over the past week and I have noticed while it doesn’t seem to slow down the frontend from what I can visually see, it has significantly slowed down the admin side of all sites that I use it with lately. When I temporarily deactivate it, the admin side speeds up to normal loading again. When reactivated, the admin slows down.

Are there any additional configurations within the plugin that may help?
