Greetings By now, we have a few weeks of practice under way in our “2k2” season. If you are new to the program, you might just be asking yourself right now, “what the heck did I get myself into?!” I can assure you, it’s still gonna get a little bit crazier, but you can trust me on this, it will be worth it. With the ongoing renovation, there are always going to be unexpected little surprises; such as sewer lines being tunneled through the middle of our practice field. But there are definitely some perks. For instance, Dr. Rubeis didn’t want the pit dads to have to repel the Himalayan dirt mounds each night to plug in the lights (even though Mr. Baratta offered to do it in his Subaru) so he bought us new lights that don’t require the mile long extension cord; Thanx Doc. And since the old staff parking lot has been obliterated, Dr. Rubeis once again came forward to give us a fully lined all weather field in the parking lot behind our beloved K-mart/music building. Speaking of K-mart, how ‘bout that garage door? Each night at 5:50 is like being in Pampolona. Rookie Parents If the kids are still not quite sure of what’s hittin’ them, and they’re around three hours a night, you guys gotta be feeling absolutely clueless. Well don’t worry, help is on its way. On Tuesday night 8/14, “Big” Phil Hudson and his veteran band parent posse are going to hold a special informative get together for all of you in the band room at 7:00pm. This will be a sort of crash course in what to expect: from everyday rehearsals and carpooling, to each performance, including the trip, and leading up to of course, the championship weekend. * Band Camp As a reminder band camp runs Monday 8/12 thru Friday 8/16. There are morning sessions which run 9-noon, as well as evening sessions which run 6-9pm. Usually, mother nature likes to run the weather gamut during this week so be prepared to be baked, drenched frozen and rebaked. Attendance is mandatory, except of course for summer school finals which all participating students need to notify me as well as their individual instructors ahead of time. “Wildcat” Preview Our 2nd annual event will be taking place on Saturday 8/24. The band will practice at noon for about three hours, and then we will present the 2k2 “w” m b for the first time, performing the full show(give or take a drill set or two) in full uniform! This is a truly exciting event. Following the performance will be a barbecue featuring a whopping 6 food lines! Compared to last year, we should move you all through like a fully automated Mitsubishi plant. Presale tix are available at the booster booth in the front K-mart lot during rehearsals for $5. Besides the barbecue, there will be at least 4 volleyball nets for some friendly little athletic competition. Drake, you’re dead meat on court #1!!! * Candy Sale This fundraiser is well under way. Always turn $ in to the Parkers (not me) at the end of Tues. & Thurs. nites. And again, each box has 52 bars, so for each $52 you turn in, half goes towards your trip assessment. This will run as long as there is candy to be sold. “Wildcards” By time you receive this, the “Wildcard” sale should have begun. The community likes these cards; they expect you to be coming around, so get to it. Turn in orders and the $6 per card at the beginning of each rehearsal to Mrs. Menzel and she will have the actual cards for you to pick up by the end of that same rehearsal, it’s like magic! 1st Annual Band Director’s Bake Off I am most pleased to announce that we will be holding a season long baking contest. The medium will be Dutch Apple Pie. All are encouraged to participate, as I believe this will make us a much better band. Valuable prizes will be awarded (as far as you know).
