Went to see National Theater Live screening of Danny Boyle's Frankenstein with a bunch of friends from East Bay. B.C. played the Creature, Johnny Lee Miller -- the Creator (Dr. Fr). The production itself was glorious -- the magical lighting, the stage which, with minimal props, was on fire and submerged in water, and dark, and light, and scrappy and lyrical. Steam-punky tinge, and straight-out period costumes. Scary and sublime. BC's performance -- very physically demanding, yet very nuanced -- was mesmerizing. Those fingers in a canvas egg; leg and hand twitches; inverted palms; mouth gestures. He vaguely reminded me of my grandfather who was born with Cerebral palsy (ДЦП), and of several severely autistic children I've met. His cadence was perfect, his movements -- without a single false note. Not sure how one rehearses that. BC inhibited that role, he was that misshapen, forsaken, horrible creature. Truth be told, I am plain envious of that man -- raw talent, raw dedication, work ethic, artistic genius applied to the max -- he is my age! Yeah. Those 10000 hrs weren't wasted. JLM played a rather flat, shrill, hysterical Creator. Other characters in the play were a bit carboardish, esp. women -- but the text -- love, longing, loneliness, absolute, absurd conviction that there's someone out there just like me, just for me -- and I have a right to that someone -- and the drumming on parental responsibility and parental love and hate -- and life in pursuit of love that's driven by hate and monstrosity -- and also a meditation on brilliance and brilliant reasoning and familiarity with morality and yet complete bestiality in the same human (human?) form -- that was something. ( fangirly under the cut, don't go thereCollapse )Tags: bc, theater

не наизусть, как она часто делает, и не только название или первую строчку, а читает-читает. fox in sox. easy, yeah, butbutbutbut! a long and winding interview with Sherlock S1 & 3 cinematographer, Steve Lawes.. Interesting bits: * his inspiration pool: Kieslowsky & Asian/Korean films. Bingo! * bagira -- he's also the "Death Comes to Pemberley" cinematographer. * He was not on the Sherlock pilot, and wanted to get away from the pilot as much as possible when shooting S1E1; S1E1 is very different, yes, but some things in the pilot I quite liked and was bummed they weren't kept (the last scene, for instance). * Interesting talk on setting up scene before hand: how much time it requires; how stair shots are normally done (not really with stairs). * Sherlock's "point of view" cinematography -- stills bit is interesting (a long paragraph on what SL came up with and how :: first mock-up was on his iPhone). * Stag night: there were about a dozen pubs they shot in, but only four made into the cut. Also, this: "It was very fluid. Them at the bottom of the stairs and them falling down was completely improvised. That happened on the first take."* Also: I’m a great believer that nothing is original. We’re all plagiarists at the end of the day.* Re: lit matchbox (insane French decathlete): It was kind of inspired from that Pulp Fiction idea of you open the briefcase and you get this shiny— you don’t know what’s in there.Tags: sherlock, tv

Обама разрубить гордеев узел не сумел (single payer system was dead on arrival), и поэтому, попытавшись поставить заплатку на продранный и разваливающийся на кусочки свитер, стал ответственным за все свитерное состояние (pardon me my flowery mix of metaphors, if it were in English I could submit it under the "block that metaphor" rubric, surely). Т. Tags: time signatures

Tags: via ljapp
