Underwhumped

Oh, Sports Night, a lovely fandom that has been largely abandoned due to the passage of time. Nevertheless, it's managed to produce some good h/c.

Recommender's Note: Pretty much the same as what I said for the fic above. Pretty classic h/c, in a fandom where classic h/c is rare.

Bones is another fandom I constantly expect to produce more h/c than it does. Possibly the light tone of the show keeps it more towards the comedy/romance side of things? I don't know. In any case, thus far I've only been able to come up with one. There are all of two bookmarks tagged "bones" and "h/c" on del.icio.us. This one I've never seen actually tagged as h/c, but there is whump towards the end.

Servare Vita [HIGHLY RECOMMENDED]

Recommender's Note: Novel length, and the whump doesn't come until the end. Totally worth reading, though.

NCIS is something of a borderline fandom; it's not huge, but there's a fair amount of fic out there. A good section of this fic is h/c focusing on either Dinozzo or Gibbs. However, for whatever reason, this fic is often not labeled as h/c, and can thus be a little difficult to track down. I have a soft spot for hurt!Tony, and had to do a fair amount of work in order to track it down - I think that qualifies it. Even though Tony!whump is to some extent canonical.

Since there is a fair amount out there, I'm focusing this post on stories which deal in some way with the second season episode "SWAK" - though some of them are post-eps, some missing scenes, and some take place years later.

Recommender's Note: Not classical hurt/comfort, in that the whump is minor and in the background. What we do get, though, that makes me classify it as h/c, is a physically vulnerable Tony, and a protective Gibbs. Which is enough for me.

Recommender's Note: This is a rather dark story, but serves as a nice contrast to all those h/c stories where the hurt immediately disappears in face of the comfort. There is both hurt and comfort in this story, but the hurt never magically disappears; instead, it is slowly worked through and recovered from.

Precious Things HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Recommender's Note: My only wish is that it was a little longer.

Chuck is a lovely new television show, half-comedy, half-drama. It is, IMO, perfectly suited for hurt/comfort - and yet I have unfortunately only managed to dig up one such fic. This is most likely due to the small size of the fandom so far; hopefully we will see more in the future.

Bedbugs [HIGHLY RECOMMENDED]

Recommender's Note: This isn't pure h/c - in fact, I'd classify it more as romance than anything else. But an injury (and the reaction to this injury) serves as a catalyst for a significant part of the action, so I think it's close enough to count.

Excerpt: The worst of it comes as they're getting Chuck into the ambulance, while Casey's standing there covered in Chuck's blood from helping the kid hold his damn guts in until the EMTs could get to him, and he hears Sarah tell Chuck she loves him.

Psych is one of those lovely, small fandoms that I stumbled upon completely by accident and fell in love with. I was very surprised to find, when turning to fic, that the predominant focus seems to be on Shawn/Lassiter - I had expected it to be Shawn/Gus. Personally, I favor Shawn/Gus, preferably with Gus being whumped. Unfortunately, the latter is quite hard to find, and thus I come with only two recs.
