Most payment gateway comparisons are written for a business taking its first hundred orders. The criteria are predictable: setup fee, transaction rate, how quickly you can get a plugin working on Shopify.
None of that survives contact with scale. Once a business is processing lakhs of transactions a month, the gateway stops being a checkout widget and becomes a piece of infrastructure sitting between the customer and the general ledger and the ledger itself is now enormous: UPI alone processed 106.36 billion transactions worth ₹143.34 trillion in H1 2025, per the Worldline India Digital Payments Report (October 2025), with its monthly run rate already topping 20 billion transactions by August 2025, according to IANS, and across every digital payment rail combined UPI, cards, net banking and wallets India logged 22.17 billion transactions for the full FY2024-25 year, according to MarkNtel Advisors. At that volume, the gateway determines how much working capital is trapped in transit, how clean the transaction data arriving in your warehouse is, how many engineering hours go into reconciliation every month, and how exposed the business is when the RBI updates a framework.
This comparison evaluates ten Indian payment gateways against the criteria that matter at volume, in an industry Mordor Intelligence projects will keep expanding to $4.01 billion by 2031 at an 11.66% CAGR. Each entry is scoped to the situation where that provider is the strongest fit in a market this specialized, the honest answer to “which is best” is almost always “for what”. Read the numbering as ten profiles, not a league table.

What to Look for in a Payment Gateway at Scale
Before the list, it is worth being precise about which variables shift.
Payment Throughput and Performance During Traffic Spikes
At low volume, every gateway looks reliable. The differences appear during a flash sale or a festive spike, when queue depth, retry logic and rate limits determine whether a 10x traffic burst converts or times out. The relevant question is not published uptime but what happens in the 0.01% whether failures degrade gracefully or cascade.
Total Payment Cost Beyond MDR
A 0.15% difference in MDR on ₹50 crore (~$6M) of annual GMV is ₹7.5 lakh a year, recurring, and that gap is real money on the table: enterprise-negotiated rates reported in December 2025 ranged from 1.5-1.8% at Razorpay to 1.4-1.7% at Cashfree and 1.3-1.6% at PayU, per Arcenik Technologies, well below any provider’s published headline rate yet few businesses ever push a negotiation that far. Compressing the settlement cycle by one day on the same volume releases roughly ₹13.7 lakh of working capital but that is a one-time balance-sheet release, worth perhaps ₹1.6-3 lakh a year once you apply a cost of capital. The two levers are the same order of magnitude at this scale, and which one dominates depends entirely on how fast your business recycles cash. Teams tend to negotiate the rate hard and never model the float at all, which is how the smaller number ends up getting all the attention.
Settlement and Reconciliation Data Quality
This is the criterion most underweighted in vendor selection and the one that generates the most downstream engineering cost. Does the settlement report carry a stable identifier that joins cleanly to the order in your OMS? Are refunds, chargebacks, adjustments and fees itemized at transaction grain, or netted at batch level? Is there a webhook for settlement events, or does someone download a CSV every morning?
A gateway with a slightly worse rate and a well-modeled settlement API is usually cheaper in total cost of ownership than the reverse and the difference compounds, because payment data is rarely consumed only by finance. It feeds revenue reporting, cohort analysis, fraud models and forecasting. A provider that emits clean, event-grain data is effectively contributing a well-formed source table to your warehouse. A provider that emits netted daily CSVs is contributing a permanent transformation job and a recurring reconciliation headcount.
Payment Success Rate and Intelligent Routing
At scale, a two-point improvement in payment success rate is worth more than any fee negotiation, and UPI is where most of that volume now sits: having already captured 63.85% of overall payment gateway transaction share in 2025, per Mordor Intelligence, UPI volumes hit 22.35 billion in April 2026, up 25% from 17.89 billion a year earlier, per India’s Department of Financial Services and ETBFSI (May 2026). That improvement comes from retry logic, issuer-level routing, network tokenization and intelligent fallback between UPI, cards and net banking. Providers differ substantially here, and the differences are hard to see before a live pilot.
RBI Compliance and Payment Aggregator Authorizations
The provider needs to hold the right RBI authorization for what you are doing, a payment aggregator licence for domestic collections, and a separate PA-CB authorization for cross-border. By January 2026, 19 entities had been fully authorized as cross-border payment aggregators. Because the RBI does not maintain a single always-current public list for PA-CB, verify status directly with the provider and against the RBI’s payment systems pages rather than trusting a marketing page.

Rates are published headline rates for standard plans, indicative only, and they shift often enough to date-stamp: as of August 2026, standard domestic TDR sat at roughly 2% for Razorpay and CCAvenue, 1.99% for Paytm, 1.95% for Easebuzz and 1.75-1.95% for Cashfree, per 10θ (Xθ). Promotional rates are common and change frequently, and enterprise pricing at volume is negotiated and typically differs materially. Verify current terms directly with each provider.
1. Cashfree Payments
Cashfree’s differentiation sits on the money-movement side rather than the checkout surface. Instant settlement moves funds to the merchant account within minutes rather than on the standard next-day cycle, which changes the working capital arithmetic for businesses reinvesting quickly into inventory or performance marketing.
On cross-border, it was the first Indian entity to receive the RBI’s PA-CB authorization, in July 2024 roughly 17 months ahead of Razorpay and supports 140+ currencies across 170+ markets. That matters for Indian SaaS companies, exporters and marketplaces collecting internationally, where the alternative is usually a slower and less well-documented banking route. Cashfree publishes 99.99% uptime and reports serving over a million businesses.
Its one-click checkout, built on the Zecpe acquisition, bundles address prefill, RTO risk scoring and fraud checks. For D2C brands where return-to-origin rather than conversion is the dominant margin leak, that is a more directly relevant lever than checkout speed. That same automation instinct extended into agentic commerce on August 25, 2026, when Cashfree announced Relay, an AI-agent payments product, per LoansJagat a signal that the roadmap is moving beyond checkout optimization toward letting AI agents initiate and manage payments directly.
On cost structure, Cashfree currently runs a festive offer of 0% platform fee for new sign-ups on sales up to ₹20 lakh a month, with a dedicated account manager included and activation in minutes rather than days. As of August 2026, standard pricing settles at 1.95%, though high-volume sellers are quoted a 1.75-1.95% domestic TDR band, per 10θ (Xθ), and Codevibe puts the annual maintenance charge at roughly ₹4,999 a year once a merchant moves off the promotional tier a real recurring line item to model against a fee-free intro period. Settlement has compressed too: alongside the standard T+1 cycle, Cashfree’s August 2026 campaign offers instant settlement from as little as 15 minutes at the 1.95% fee tier, per Growwwtech. For a business at the volumes this article is about, the promotional tier will be exhausted quickly, so model the standard rate and the AMC together but it does remove the cost of running a parallel pilot, which is the practical use for it here.
The trade-offs worth modeling: instant settlement is a paid add-on rather than a default, so it earns its keep only where the margin absorbs the fee or the freed capital genuinely compounds for a business turning inventory quickly; both conditions usually hold, but the calculation should be run rather than assumed. International card rates also sit meaningfully above domestic, as they do across the market, so a cross-border-heavy book will not see the domestic headline rate.
2. Razorpay
Razorpay has the good surrounding product surface of any Indian provider: payment links, subscriptions, smart collect, a neobanking layer, capital products and, since August 18, 2026, Vulcan an AI payments model trained on 4 billion transactions, per LoansJagat and that breadth shows up in the numbers it held roughly 21% of the overall Indian payment gateway market in March 2026, ahead of PayU’s 17%, Cashfree’s 13% and CCAvenue’s 12%, per Tanushka Singh’s analysis on LinkedIn, and led broker-related payment volume specifically with close to a 40% share in April 2026, per UPIbroker.
As of August 2026, standard pricing is roughly 2% plus GST for domestic cards, UPI, net banking and wallets, per Codevibe, with premium instruments such as EMI, corporate cards and Amex priced higher. There is no setup fee and no annual maintenance charge on standard plans.
The trade-off is the general one that applies to any consolidation decision: concentrating several products with a single vendor deepens switching costs. Worth planning an exit path at contract stage rather than after.
3. PayU
PayU has the deepest bank tie-ups for no-cost and low-cost EMI of the providers here. For categories with high average order values electronics, furniture, education, travel EMI availability is frequently the single largest determinant of conversion, and that coverage is difficult to match. Standard pricing runs 2% on domestic cards and 3% on international, with lower rates available above ₹50 lakh in monthly volume, as payments consultant Rajesh R. Nair noted in April 2026. It received RBI approval to operate as an online, offline and cross-border payment aggregator in November 2025.
One general note for dispute-heavy categories: chargeback handling fees vary widely across providers, are usually negotiated rather than published, and are worth modeling explicitly against your historical dispute rate before signing.
4. BillDesk
BillDesk is effectively the default rail for utility, insurance and recurring bill payments in India, processing over 4 billion transactions annually. Its value is the accumulated depth of biller and bank integrations, which a newer provider cannot replicate quickly. It also holds PA-CB authorization.
Its integration model predates current SDK conventions, so budget for a longer integration than a contemporary aggregator would require. For a modern D2C checkout, other providers on this list are a closer fit.
5. CCAvenue
Operating since 2001, CCAvenue supports 200+ payment options and 27+ currencies. For businesses serving segments that use less common instruments regional net banking, niche wallets, specific EMI providers the breadth is genuinely useful.
Its reporting layer reflects an earlier generation of design conventions, which is worth checking against your analytics team’s requirements if they plan to build on exported data.
6. Paytm Payment Gateway
Paytm’s advantage is the combination of a consumer wallet holding meaningful balances with a payment gateway in one stack, reducing friction for customers already inside an acceptance network that has scaled fast industry-wide UPI merchant touchpoints grew from roughly 30 million in 2022 to approximately 180 million by April 2026, a six-fold increase, per The Platinum Capital’s analysis of NPCI data (May 2026), a surge that tracks the broader digital payments boom: India’s Ministry of Finance put total digital payment volume at 22.17 billion transactions for FY2024-25 alone. Paytm Payments Services Limited received final payment aggregator authorization in November 2025 and clearance for offline and cross-border payment aggregation the following month, giving it a full authorization set.
7. PhonePe Payment Gateway
PhonePe holds the largest UPI app share in India, in the region of 46-47% by monthly NPCI data, and its payment gateway leverages a consumer footprint built on acceptance infrastructure that itself expanded sharply India reached 11.2 million PoS terminals and 6.72 million Bharat QR deployments in H1 2025, per Worldline India (October 2025). That concentration matters strategically given UPI alone accounted for 63.85% of overall payment gateway transaction share in 2025, according to Mordor Intelligence, so PhonePe’s dominance inside UPI translates directly into gateway-level reach.
Its strength is concentrated in UPI. Evaluate non-UPI coverage against your own instrument mix in practice this makes it a strong secondary provider in a multi-PSP setup more often than a sole one.
How to Evaluate a Payment Gateway Before Scaling
Vendor decks will not answer the questions that matter. A four-week pilot on live traffic should measure:
Payment success rate by instrument and issuer, not blended: A blended number hides the fact that one provider is strong on UPI and weak on a specific issuer’s cards, which is exactly the information routing decisions require.
Settlement report joinability: Take one day of settlement data and attempt to reconcile it against your order management system without manual intervention. The proportion that matches automatically is a direct proxy for the ops headcount this provider will cost you annually.
Behavior under a synthetic spike: Push 5x your peak through the sandbox and observe whether errors are typed and retryable or generic.
Refund and chargeback latency: measured end to end. Refund speed is a customer support cost and a review-score input, not just a finance metric.
Webhook reliability: Count duplicates and out-of-order deliveries over the pilot window. Both are normal; what matters is whether the provider documents them clearly enough for you to build idempotency correctly.
Build a Payment Data Architecture That Scales
Whichever provider you choose, the payments data eventually has to land somewhere it can be joined to orders, customers, refunds and marketing spend. That is where most of the recurring cost actually sits.
The pattern that holds up at scale is to treat each provider’s settlement and webhook streams as source-grain tables, land them raw, and model the reconciliation logic in the warehouse rather than in application code so that adding a second acquirer means adding a source, not rewriting a pipeline.
