Capitalism: A Fundraiser
Help raise funds for Sydney's Human Rights Arts and Film Festival (HRAFF - http://www.hraff.org.au) by attending tomorrow night's 7pm screening of Capitalism: A Love Story, the new Michael Moore film.
7pm, Cinema 6 George St Cinemas George St, Sydney
Capitalism: A Love Story, Michael Moore's new documentary, will explore the root causes of the global economic meltdown and take a comical look at the corporate and political shenanigans that culminated in what Moore described as 'the biggest robbery in the history of this country' - the massive transfer of U.S. taxpayer money to private financial institutions.

9:29 pm - Club Pimping: Sutekh
|

First-year Sydney Uni students and returning ones might be interested in joining one of the most active clubs on campus, SUTEKH.
Sutekh is Sydney Uni's geek club - we cover pop culture, gaming (board games, computer & console games, RPGS and tabletops), comics and graphic novels, sci-fi/fantasy, and everything else geeky. So if you like Twilight or nWoD or Left 4 Dead or Magic: The Gathering or WHATEVER, we're the club for you.
Sutekh will be running 5 regular events every week this year: Mondays: free nostalgia screenings of 80s and 90s cartoons Tuesday: video game competitions (Guitar Hero, Brawl etc) in Manning Bar Wednesdays: Beer and Cards - Sutekh members get a free beer or soft drink, and there's cards. Like, 500 and poker, but also Munchkin, Bang, Chez Geek and CCGs Thursdays: free screenings of the cult show Andromeda Fridays: Pizza & Games - Access card holders get a pizza for $4, and there are all sorts of board games and video games.
We also do regular LANs and special movie screenings at Hermann's Bar at Wentworth, and in May we'll be holding a private screening and fan event for Wolverine: Origins.
Check out the Sutekh Forums for more info!

7:14 pm - women's film festival - x-posted
|

overture_
|
Hi all, I'm putting together a film festival to promote women's cinema and video art in reaction to the following:
The film industry shuts out both women filmmakers and audiences. Making just more than half the population, there are huge numbers of women who belong to at least one of these two parties. The problem is not a lack of women who wish to work as filmmakers: the numbers of film school graduates are evenly male and female. Despite this, only 4% of directors are women.
In the history of the Academy Awards, only three women have been nominated for Best Director (none of them have won). Sofia Coppola was the last woman to be nominated, in 2003, for Lost in Translation. Prior to this, Jane Campion was nominated in 1993 for The Piano. The third, and the first woman ever to be nominated, was Lina Wertmüller in 1976 for her film Seven Beauties. There has never been an Academy Award nomination for a woman cinematographer.
http://www.seenandheardfilms.com/
I am VERY EAGER for submissions of all varieties of film - shorts, features, video art, doccos, etc. - please drop me a line at adolphusmaritime@gmail.com and I will send you an application form.
Please consider!

9:54 am - Human Rights Photography Competition
|

hreoc_web
|
http://www.humanrights.gov.au/photo_comp/index.html
To celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Australian Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (HREOC) is holding a photo competition based on the theme - ‘Dignity and justice for all of us’.
We're searching for images that reflect the theme of the competition and provide a unique approach to a human rights subject. For some, the photograph will record a moment that celebrates dignity and justice; for others, it will capture fundamental rights and freedoms being recognised; or it may be an observance of what human rights means to you.
Entry categories - under 18 female, under 18 male, 18 and above.
Great prizes and entry is free.
Entries close 31 October 2008.

Hello everyone! I'm an American interested in studying at U Syd for a Masters of Education. Right now I'm living in Japan doing the JET Program, so I have to wait and apply to start in Feb 2010. Is anyone else out there an international student? I'd like to know the time-line for application and visa nonsense. Also, any general advice would be greatly appreciated :)

9:05 pm - Seeking Volunteer Models / Actors for Animal Rights Advert
|
|
bluebottleau
|
Looking for actors / models in the Western Sydney region for a series of adverts for the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Asia/Pacific), five adverts in total of 45-60 seconds length and one 15-20 minute cinematic short. Know any animal lovers who'd be willing to donate some of their time to save thousands of bears from torture?
They get to be kidnapped, beaten, manhandled, chained to a wall, hosed, surgically mutilated and kept in a TINY cage until they die a horrible death.
Okay, they don't really, but that's what five people will be acting out, and dozens of others will be required for the cage farm scene. Acting or modelling experience is not neccesary, just an avid interest in stopping the horrific treatment of animals on Chinese bear bile farms and a willingness to assist with this project is what's required.
Shooting commences on or around the 1st of June, project completion by 12th of July.
Email us at au-casting@bluebottle.com for a project outline, please include two digital portraits and one full length body shot of yourself if interested.

6:42 pm - Centrelink
|

kittenexploring
|
Any tips for dealing with Centrelink?
I applied for Austudy but it was cancelled because I didn't report before I was even approved and had something to report for. I applied on the 8th February, had a letter on the 1st April to tell me I was approved then another on the 2nd April to tell me it was cancelled for not reporting on the 15th March.
So far their contact number has been engaged every time I've tried it. The online stuff also doesn't work as I need to upgrade my registration. There's a link to upgrade my registration but I can't use it until I upgrade my registration. Tomorrow I have enough time off uni to go to their office (using my last cents to get there, but fortunately I can probably beg money off family).
So, any tips? Access to a time machine would also be helpful.
ETA: In person seems to have worked. Found out that I wouldn't have been able to report even if I had the time machine (capable of travelling to the backdated reality) but they tell me it's sorted now. I'll believe it when I see the money.

If you're coming to O-Week on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday next week, and you're interested in any of the following things:
- sci-fi - fantasy - computer games - console games - horror - RPGS - CCGs - Board games - Pop Culture - Comics & Graphic Novels - Wargaming & miniatures
then you should definitely check out Sutekh, USyd's Sci-fi/Fantasy/Pop-Culture/Gaming society. We're basically the geek club, and we're pretty awesome. We run FOUR regular events every week - screenings of new Doctor Who and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, a free Beer & Cards event on Wednesdays in Manning Bar, and our Pizza & Games nights on Fridays in the Holme building. We also run regular movie screenings, saturday games days, and big events like private premiere night screenings of movies (last year we won an USU award for our opening-night screening of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix).
Our stall is at the Fisher Library corner of the Front Lawns (we're at Stall 68, near the IT society and the Anime society), and we're running an event all three days, all day long on the ground floor of the Manning building, on the couches, with board games, card games, and comics and graphic novels for you to read.
If this sounds like your sort of thing, have a look at our forums or check out our Facebook group.

10:54 am - Timetable Confusion
|

shark_girl
|
Can someone tell me how to work out the timetable? If there are several sessions posted for one subject written as: Mon 16:00 [1 to 12 of sess 1] and Tue 13:00 [1 to 13 of sess 1], Wed 08:00-10:00 [1 to 5, 7 to 11 of sess 1]
does this mean I choose one of these times to attend, or I attend Monday *and* either Tuesday or Wednesday, or I attend all sessions.
Yes, there is great hope for me studying well when I cant even work out the bloody timetable :\
