Could Sea of Thieves Be Playable Forever? Help Preserve Sea of Thieves - Offline Single Player, Peer-to-Peer, or Server Hosting
My proposal is very simple.

We already have Custom Seas. I propose to implement an offline single player mode, or a peer-to-peer option, so Sea of Thieves can remain playable forever, instead of relying on centralized servers which can eventually be shut down due to costs.

I proposed it in the official Sea of Thieves forums which the game developers read. If you want to support this idea, please reply there as well to support it. https://www.seaofthieves.com/community/forums/topic/185338/offline-game-mode-for-sea-of-thieves/ If that thread does not get any new reply for more than 30 days (since the last reply), it gets locked and no further replies are allowed (rules of that forum).

Why would developers, after working years in a game they love, not want it to live on by being playable forever? Why would player fans, after playing their favorite game for years, not want it to be playable forever? Would you rather prefer a game you like to be playable for some years or to remain playable forever?

I use the term "offline mode" (player-hosted, peer-to-peer, or complete offline) as in opposition to "always-online" (requiring centralized servers that can be shut down due to costs). When I mention offline mode, I'm proposing either offline mode or peer-to-peer option, so the game does not need to rely on central servers to be played, but rather to have the option to be player-hosted, offline, or peer-to-peer, so it can be played forever.

Sea of Thieves is a game that currently relies on Microsoft's Azure servers to run. Servers cost money to be maintained, and companies sometimes decide to shut down servers to cut costs.

As a big time fan of Sea of Thieves, I worry about the day it could no longer be playable due to shutdown of servers. Instead, I would like and prefer it to be playable forever, so I can play it until the day I die and so other people can get to experience it too, if they want, even if they play it years down the line. I ask you to help me increase the chances of preserving this game.

I created a proposal to Rare developers in the official Sea of Thieves forum, which the developers of the game regularly read and consider as a feedback source.

It has been done before:

Ubisoft released an offline mode for The Crew 2 in 2025, 7 years after the game was originally released (2018).

Supertrick released an offline mode for Let It Die (2018) in 2026, 8 years after launch. Let It Die was a live-service game and now has an offline mode. The original game was free-to-play, and the offline edition is sold as a premium game.

Gran Turismo Sport, developed by Polyphony Digital, a console-only game, was released in 2017, and received an offline mode patch in 2024, allowing players to play it forever.

Splitgate, developed by 1047 Games, launched in 2019 as a live-service, server-based multiplayer game. It switched to peer-to-peer connection in 2025 after closure of servers.

Wayfinder, developed by Airship Syndicate, launched as an MMO and received an offline mode. It can even be played in 3-player co-op now. They are even beta-testing mods on the game now, after it has gone fully into offline mode.

If they did what developers used to in the old days this would never be an issue, let us host our own servers... Most games back in the day came with the server side in the box so you werre just a double clickaway from hosting your own forever.
That's a good idea for when the game is about to shut down, but for now as long as people keeps buying or playing it they won't see it as a priority.
For it to happen you'll have to convince everybody not to comment or vote or whatever but to actually take action and just stop playing the game all at once.
I'm not sure I'd call 3,100 people on PC, as playing. Seems like they have lost their touch and should just let us host our own servers or actually have servers that allow people to completely progress out of public servers,
I agree though, when they go to end their time with this game, a locally hosted option would keep this game from dying and disappear from the ethos.

thats 3.1k STEAM users. what about Microsoft Store version?
why should people just progress on a server with zero risk. risk vs reward is what SoT is all about.
Unpopular opinion and i know some people might randomly add me to drop insults at me which i don't care and i consider it fun:

Games used to be about beating challenges, not erasing them from existance. There are already many games about collecting rewards without doing nothing, like clicker games and some games where you just walk around collecting fruits. They're single player and nobody can steal your fruits.

But yes this game definitely must allow players to host their own servers, but only when they're about to shut down.

But again most game devs won't care about that, that's why it's always best to avoid buying live service games, to teach game devs people are tired of them randomly shutting down basically deleting the game people paid for and their invested hours, including all the money they used to support them by buying cosmetics or monthly sub or whatever it has.

You gotta make then change not the devs as they don't care about text that doesn't harms their business, only your choices of not paying them anymore.

It also costs money to make such an offline mode and if you didn't notice yet, companies on this planet do not give a :crosscannons: what players want, but what costs less and just running it online until it's not profitable anymore to then shut it down entirely costs less.
There is no one that cares if you would like to play it offline afterwards or not, it is JUST about GETTING MORE AND MORE AND MORE "MONEY" and unless your hiding several hundred millions under your idea, it's not gonna happen even if 10 million people like it.

Oh and remind me what happened when that stopkillinggames stuff met system logic in the eu.
Developer Funcom recently announced[duneawakening.com] that AAA open world survival craft game Dune: Awakening will receive a full single player mode, which includes the entirety of the game (the whole game world, and all gameplay mechanics). The game was multiplayer-only at launch (and during more than one year). They also mentioned on the game reddit that it will additionally receive an offline mode. Currently, players need to be online to play the single player mode, but it will also receive an offline option for those who want it.

An interesting detail is that the game's multiplayer mode supports up to 40 players at the same time on its "Hagga Basin" location and hundreds of players on its "Deep Desert" location. This could summon the argument that "due to the number of players in those regions, it would not be possible to allow a single player or offline version which includes such parts of the game", and nevertheless, it was possible as well. The game was initially described by the company[duneawakening.com]] as having "large-scale multiplayer", "many typical MMO features - including the massively multiplayer aspect" and being "not single-player" (originally), and yet, such a mode was still possible (but took some time to be made, which is reasonable).

This is another case of an AAA game receiving an offline single player patch developed by its company.
They need to do this, but still want to squeeze the last dollar off their few remaining customers.

Once they are gone, they should make this single player for 99% of the people who prefer it, add some NPC crew, make it into a DLC and charge $20 . They'll make tons of money converting this to a single player game unless they wait too long and another pirate game comes along and does it better

Your "NPC crew" dlc will be as popular as the "Immerse Gamepack Sea of Thieves" and will most likely generate just as much money. ^^

Converting a multiplayer pvpve game into a single player with a 20€ npc crew pack is about the biggest self destruction since marathon entered production.. with the difference that it will most likely generate even less income for the company with it being more profitable to just shutdown the servers when the income is to low :laughing_yeti: .
Not to mention that the claim of the alternative or even rivaling game is something that people said for years and years. Sadly i can't see Atlas, Skull and Bones, Windrose or anything in production coming even remotely close to SoT, and these are not even the prime days of SoT anymore.

Also we shouldn't forget there is apperently a SoT movie in production which could cause new players to enter or old players returning. Okay fair point, i also don't have any faith in rare left that they'll manage a good set of updates or even a Grand Maritime Union introduction before the movie releases but let's not worry about the state of the game, the last updates, the chronic missing of marks and the trainwreck that is the lore's evolution over the past few years.
Yes, I'd support that! Never been in favour of games that are dependent on internet only, just to run, gives the game very limited access. It's bad enough when servers shut down, but the worst case scenarios are when EMP strikes happen, which has happened before. Sea of Thieves would be in serious trouble if something like that happened, added to that, the problem with the server shutdowns too, which is why I'll always consider 'online only' to be a very poor mechanic to any game.

Dune had a big revival introducing single-player only mode. There is a market for this already as evident by Safer Seas. Believe me they would've have introduced SS if the multiplayer/pvp was going strong.. They just want to squeeze the last remaining funds off the few remaining playing before introducing a true single-player experience, and I dont blame them. I give it a year or two until they give us the offline/SP experience many here have wanted.

What your saying sounds like copium and no i don't believe you. If there were such great market potential microsoft would kick the doors of rare's HQ in and order them to do it or microsoft would search for a studio that can make it happen.
And safer seas only exists because of the constant whining of people that don't understand how pvpve works and rares altruistic attempt of making these people happy. ^^
Maybe the devs realized pve mains aren't good for making money.
