You may have heard recently about the controversy surrounding the US use of white phosphorus munitions during the attack upon Fallujah in Oct. 2004. Specifically, there were video and reports indicating that white phosphorus attacks were responsible for the deaths of numerous civilians during the attack on the city. The U.S. State Department, which previously denied the offensive use of white phosphorus in Fallujah, recently admitted to its use when confronted by undeniable evidence to the contrary, but contends that its use was fully legal and consistant with the Geneva Convention, although that is a matter of contention, even within the Army's own guidelines.
So, here's where you come in... I need a copy of a document archived on the Stanford campus, written during World War II, which specifically states that "the use of White Phosphorus Bombs as anti-personnel weapons . . . is a contravention of the Geneva Conventions."
I need a Stanford student to go to the Hoover Institution Library and Archives and obtain a copy of the document as described on this website, which is a part of the Daniel Lerner (Psychological Warfare) papers in the Manuscript Division, Hoover Institution on War, Revolution, and Peace, Stanford University, California: Box 35: "SHAEF, Other Branches".
By obtaining the document, you will help to shape the debate over the use of a weapon as potentially lethal and indiscriminate as white phosphorus against mixed civilian/military targets in the future. I would, in turn, pass it on to numerous journalists, organizations, and independent writers who could help to make this argument.
Would any of you be willing to help with this project? |

"Male superiority, social snobbery and the laws of Parliament are nothing to the whims of fairies."
When the fairy Iolanthe (Ming Zhu, Stanford) dared to love a mere mortal, she broke one of the fairies' most fundamental laws and was banished. Now pardoned after 25 years, she assists her grown son Strephon (Brian Stuhan, Stanford), a shepherd, who loves Phyllis (Marina Orzano, Los Altos), a ward of the Court of Chancery. But the Lord Chancellor (Rick Bogart, Palo Alto) and half of the House of Peers love Phyllis too. To gain the upper hand in this romantic struggle, the fairies decree that the House of Lords will in the future be filled by competitive examination. Find out what happens when mistaken identities, a horde of angry fairies, and a well placed "spell" have their effect on Parliamentary politics, and how love (and some subtle legal cleverness) can overcome all barriers.
Tickets are available by phone at 650/725-ARTS (725-2787) or in person from the Stanford Ticket Office inside Tresidder Memorial Union on campus. Ticket prices are General $15, Senior $10, Student $8.
Our web site
http://www.stanford.edu/group/savoyards/
has directions, a map, and more information about "Iolanthe".
The show is awesome & definitely worth your time! It's a little bit slow to start, but once the House of Peers makes their entrance, it really picks up :). |

i went out to the Stanford vs. BYU football game tonight and wanted to let you know that although our mascot is unfortunately still a tree, our football team has been KILLIN!!
now i'm doing this survey not only because I'm pulsing with school pride, but... well because itz 4 am and what else really is there to do. it feels like everyone besides us has started school and is off and running on their new lives. my friends are having an unbearably good time. it doesn't get truly depressing until i look around and see the stacks of books I still need to read. man, Genesis is the kicker.
name: Rachel Yong location: Pacifica, CA birth date: April 21, 1986 reason for LJ username: i don't have reasons for very much. I think it vaguely reminded me of astroturf, which makes me laugh. AIM sn: hotpinkatom reason for AIM sn: I was obsessed with naming my daughter "atom" -i really don;t remember where the hot pink came from. music that will most likely be blaring from your dorm room: longwave, cheap trick, mase, jimmy eat world, madonna, rooney, vast, elefant, badly drawn boy, and can't forget the twista! on that note, favorite song: "Lose Ya" by Pete Yorn or "Lost Cause" by Beck, although I can't really handle any of his other songs when you got your acceptance letter, the first words out of your mouth were: "mom, ok no excuses this time, this mail was CLEARLY for mee..." i got home and the envelope was like ripped to shreds. this woman...I can't even handle her reading the backs of my postcards, and she goes and opens my admissions envelope. pffff. favorite part of admit weekend: i could only make it for about half a day. first choice IHUM: SLE (i'm still wondering why I did that) ProMa(Prospective Major/minor): so far i've been putting Medieval Studies and Petroleum Engineering. i'm kind of afraid to say "SIKE!" to my advisor's face... what makes you most nervous/excited/anxious about the farm: does everyone really wear a helmet? |
