So the other day I found myself at Bed Bath and Beyond, innocently shopping for jersey-knit sheets, and quite possibly, a purple bath towel, when I came across something..
A photograph, found in the "patriotic art" section of the store, a place that seemed to me like Old Glory threw up and was selling for $19.98.
Now ever since September 11th, patriotic crap has been selling like chocolate at fat camp. And you must display this crap in order to prove that you a) Love this country with every fiber of your being b) Show your support for the rescue workers without actually lifting a finger or making a contribution c) Love Jesus And most importantly... d) Are not a terrorist You must decorate your office, home, and especially your eco-friendly, gas-guzzling SUV (you've got to support the war somehow, did you think those Iraqi civilians died for nothing? Burn those expendable fossil fuels with pride!) with American flags (made in China) and red, white, and blue paraphernalia. And, as a bonus, once you have proved to the entire freeway that you are indeed, a true American, take your new found liberty-and drive like a jackass! Come on, go 85 on the I-95, 45 in a school zone, blinkers are for pussies! Even drive on the wrong side of the road; go on, you're sure ain't a terrorist!
Anyway, back to my escapade at Bed & Bath.
So along with the usual patriotic crap, there were the usual prints of New York City, and faux-artsy type prints of flowers. This photograph was of three women, young enough to be called "girls" all blonde and leggy and smiling. Sitting side-by-side, holding up a sign that said "We will not marry for the duration unless we marry a SERVICEMAN".
Apparently, this was some type of WWII propaganda intending to make people stop and think "Aw, how cute". Girls doing their part, helping the war effort. Perhaps the best message this photo sends is that a woman's place in the US Military is prone. What better way to service your country that by becoming a serviceman's domestic slave? What better way that by having his favorite meal and slippers ready for him when he comes home, and afterwards, spreading your legs for 15 minutes so he can fuck you. Maybe you'll even hum "God Bless America" to yourself while he does it. Now what could be more patriotic than that?
But hey, why stop there? You know what we women are really here for. That's right-baby making machines! Make your country proud. Pop out a few blonde kids-just make sure they're boys (he doesn't want daughters) and strait (he doesn't want faggots!) We're going to need more of them to fight more pointless wars! (Forecast: Oil prices rising, President's approval rating dropping...Outcome? WAR! But don't worry, it will be thousands of miles away in a small country that most of Americans cannot locate on a map! And we'll spend billions of taxpayer dollars......daily!)
Not only is being a baby-factory the most rewarding, natural (and damn PATRIOTIC) thing you could do with your life, but you will be richly rewarded by good old W! That's right ladies, $400 per kid, per year! Just overlook the floundering economy please, and don't question government policy! Those documents MUST stay secret, Al-Qaida and Iraq are linked we SWEAR! Just don't ask us for any proof, because it's, um, top secret. Oh, and we're nearly, almost, mostly, just about certain that Iraq, France, Afghanistan, North Korea, Cuba, your grandmother, Paraguay, Canada, and your dog currently posses Weapons of Mass Destruction. Now take your $400, shut up, and punch out a few more kids. Uncle Sam's counting on you!
If Bush starts handing out medals to women who have 3 kids, and houses to those who have 9, I'm moving to Canada.
Oh, and now that we don't need a warrant, we'll be tapping your phone lines and surveying your homes. Hope you don't mind! Remember-Big Brother, err, Uncle Sam is watching!
I guess I should write this all now when it's still legal.

[sorry if i'm crossposting] [passed on from damnit_janet]
I know that many (if not all) of us are rather annoyed at pResident Dubya at the moment and want to do something to help get gay marriages legalized. I know that some people have written excellent letters, and I've been tossing around that idea myself.
However, I think we need something more... something that will get our point across in a quick, easy, noticable way. Letters are wonderful, and I certainly urge everyone to write to the government officials. However, there is no guarentee that the person will read it, much less act on it.
So, here's my idea...
Have as many people as we can go out and buy a postcard. (Or several) Preferably one that shows a picture of your local area. Address it to the White House, and put, "I support gay marriages!" (or something similar... we can always brainstorm on a catchy slogan later) and then put your name, city, and state. Don't put anything else on there.
You could write one to the pResident, one to the V.P., one to your Govenor, one each to your Congressmen, and so forth.
I'd also suggest having everyone send them during the same week, so we can flood their mailboxes and make it more noticable. Perhaps during National Coming Out week, which is in October. That also gives us a few months to get organized and tell others about the idea.
What does everyone think about this? Do you think it could make an impact? Can we get enough people to participate? It's not exactly a big thing, but it's something and can remind our elected officials just how many supporters are out there.
(Also, I need to give credit to the Pagan Unity Campaign, which is where I got the idea.)
If you like the concept, feel free to post this idea in other communities/journals/message-boards/mailing-lists/whatever.

10:59 am - trip advice (sorry if this is cross posted)

anyone here know of someplace rad that i should swing by on my road trip i'm taking at the end of this month? right now it's looking like a northern route out, southern route back. i'm looking to take 2 - 3 weeks max because my compadre must be home for his suck-job (as in job that sucks)
the east bay is the destination but i'd like to see Chicago, Minneapolis, Cleveland. And we'll probably go to Charleston and maybe New Orleans. This all depends on how we're doing time/money wise. I'm completley open for advice if anyone's got any as far as the journey goes. hostles, ymcas, cheap & decent food \ coffee, shows coming up in the area, places to avoid, etc.
i haven't posted here in a long time but i watch the community, sorry if it seems like i'm leeching off of a valuable feminista resource- figured this'd be a really good place to ask, being that it's 300 odd memebers strong and filled with grrrls that have interests in common with mi self. chutch.
cheers, - leigh

With legal marriage now available to gay and lesbian couples in Ontario and British Columbia — and potentially in Massachusetts too — this is the time for every American who believes in civil rights and marriage equality to speak up. Finding a soul mate and building a life together is an integral part of the American dream. Gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Americans share that dream and just like every American family, they need the responsibilities and privileges that come with marriage. Please say "I DO." Sign this petition - and join the Million for Marriage movement today.

Are you for the legalization of reproductive cloning? Why?
What do you think about abortion in relation to cloning?
Are you opposed to the legalization of abortion? Under what conditions should abortion be legal?
What do you think about cloning in relation to homosexuality, particularly desire to have a child by means other than artificial insemination?

6:26 pm - girl tabs community ?
|

heartshapedcunt
|
I have an idea.
An LJ community dedicated to girl music tablature ONLY. Girl music of guitar, bass, drums, etc.
That way we can put posted tabs in the History for easy access. And people can comment on posts with corrections and questions!
Anyone have an extra LJ code? Anyone want to run this with me? It might get pretty big, lots of content to speak for, so more than one moderator would be ideal!

now for my dilemma...im just hoping that it does not imply false emotional attatchments...
paulette wants matt's screen name. and i don't want to give it to her. i don't want her talking to matt, or anyone else that goes to solebury because i know from experience that they'll become good friends and eventually hang out together without me. this is exactly what happened with paul. i gave her a wrong screen name, and i feel kinda bad, but im afraid that my friends will become her friends. now i feel like a possesive bitch. it's difficult to explain without sounding like i like matt. i guess no matter how you look at it im being a moron. advice, please?

Hi. I just joined this minute. I thought that this might be one of those crafty communities like "how to decorate stuff with safety pins" but this is even better. Anarchy. At my school, as it is at other schools, the administrators COMPLETELY suck. Freaks don't do shit to anybody and get BUSHES (that's right.. SHRUBBERY) thrown at them by jocks and the FREAKS get in trouble. My friend gets her name written all over the stalls for being a slut, and since it was the end of the year the administrators didn't want to bother starting up writing detentions. Oh but get this... SOMEONE tells the drama teacher that I called her a lesbian (which I did NOT do) and they suspend me for 2 days. WHAT THE FUCK EVER.
But here's my real story dealing with the administration.
I have a tent. Yes, a tent. I bought it because I had to do this play where I needed a small tent (Julius Caesar... don't ask.) So I brought it with me to school. Well my friend wanted to put it up during lunch. We sit out in the courtyard, very big concrete space, and NO one colorful sits near us. And I like it like that. So anyways, we're a very ... peaceful group. We don't start shit with anyone. We spend hot days laying with heads in each others' laps, etc. We pitch this small play tent (no spikes or weapons involved, ya know?) in the middle of our little area.
And people immediately start shit with us!
Oh, yes. Rednecks taking flying leaps ONTO our tent.
Miss O'Malley (of course, the girls' volleyball coach) comes over and starts telling us to take it down. So I say "Why? In the rule book, there's nothing against tents. Can you tell me what rule I'm breaking?" "No, I will not and if you don't put that tent down right now you're gonna get suspended." So me and my friends are taking it down and I'm like "Just tell me what rule I'm breaking, PLEASE." I'm being perfectly polite. And she just keeps saying she doesn't have to tell me blah blah blah. So the next day... we put it up again. Miss Olsen (Vice Principal) comes over again. She's nice. She thinks our tent's darling but we just have to keep it down because if we put it up it's DISRESPECT to Miss O'Malley. What about the disrespect against us. She wouldn't even tell us why she didn't like the tent. Well, whatever. We kept it down.
That was a year ago.
Last week of school, I bring the tent back. It's our last full day and the last time we're gonna have lunch together so I wanted it to be memorable. Tent. We put it up. Get 5 of us in there again. Now fucking Mr. Wilson (boys track coach. Notorious for flirting with freshmen. *shudder*) comes over and he's telling us to fold it up. and i'm like "What? It won't blow up. I don't have to hold it up." and he's like Fold it down. and I say "I DON'T HAVE TO HOLD IT DOWN EITHER!" Side Note: I'm having more fun getting in trouble for the fucking tent than actually just sitting in it. So he comes over and tells us to take it down. And I'm like... "What rule am I breaking? Will you tell me?" "If you don't take it down this minute, then you'll get suspended!" I start taking it down. He's walking away and I'm like, "MR. WILSON! HONESTLY! WHAT'S THE PROBLEM WITH MY TENT! DON'T YOU LIKE THE COLOR?"
It just makes me angry that they wouldn't even tell me what the fuck was wrong with a tent. It does no problem to anyone. My poor tent never hurt nobody....
