For any fans of the band Thursday, take a break for a few hours tomorrow (Wednesday) night when they play at Jillian's. This is pretty cool: The last time the New Jersey band played at such a small venue in Vegas was back about 2001 or 2002 at the now-long-defunct Tremorz on Maryland Parkway. Since then, the band signed to a major label (Island), and its last three appearances in Sin City have been at packed-to-the-girders shows at the House of Blues and on one of the main stages when the Warped Tour blew into town.
But in support of the recently released compilation of live, rare and unreleased tracks, the CD/DVD "Kill the House Lights"--a temporary return to indie label Victory Records--Thursday is playing small club gigs, such as the El Rey in Los Angeles and our own arcade-turned-music venue, Jillian's. For fans of the band, it's pretty exciting: A chance to see the now-sextet up-close-and-sweaty, just like the old days.
If you're even a passing fan of Thursday, I recommend checking out this inexpensive ($16 I think) and intimate show. Portugal the Man and Circle Takes the Square open the show, and it all starts at 6 p.m. at 450 Fremont St., right there on the corner of Las Vegas Boulevard.
Oh ... I found this on the Thursday news site. It's probably far too late for anyone who is interested to enter, but I'll repost it for fun anyway. Good for the kids: Everyone that's out in Vegas we are doing a fun contest where you can win a change to race some cars with us at the arcade at Jillian's before the show on 11/14. Here's all you need to do to enter the contest: Please send an email to JilliansVegas@gmail.com by tomorrow night, 11/13/07 by 11:59pm and tell us why we should pick you! Be sure to include your full name, and contact number. Winner will be notified by 12pm on 11/14/07. Thanks so much and can't wait to see you at the show!

11:01 pm - Article: Nevada governor accidentally posts Outlook password

WTF? DOH!
http://www.politechbot.com/2007/07/20/whoops-nevada-governor/
In what could be a whopping security hole, Nevada has posted the password to the gubernatorial e-mail account on its official state Web site. It appears in a Microsoft Word file giving step-by-step instructions on how aides should send out the governor's weekly e-mail updates, which has, as a second file shows, 13,105 subscribers.
The Outlook username is, by the way, "governor" and the password is "kennyc". We should note at this point that the former Nevada governor, a Republican, is Kenny C. Guinn, which hardly says much about password security.

Here comes the Raelians!

George Knapp, Chief Investigative Reporter I-Team: Alien Nation, Raelians Moving Headquarters to Las Vegas
You've heard the old cliche that Las Vegas has more churches per capita than any other city in America? Maybe it's true, maybe it isn't, but we're about to get another one.
The Raelians are unlike any other religion in the world since they do not believe in God at all. But it's their other beliefs that are more likely to raise hackles among other faiths.
It's just a coincidence that Raelians rhymes with aliens, but it's telling. Although they've been called a cult, they are far removed from any religious cult you've ever heard of. ( Read more...Collapse )

In case anyone believes Racket is all about porn and tattoos, well, you're right.
But, just to throw people off, we're bringing art to Las Vegas too. Art and booze. Art and booze and music. Our Crime on Canvas series starts this Friday, April 6, at our own gallery space next to Brass Lounge, inside the giant pint glass at the corner of Fremont Street and Las Vegas Blvd. So. Want reasons to swing by there on First Friday?
1. Art by renowned NYC street artists J Strickland and Chris Yormick 2. Free liquor thanks to "Open Bar" 3. Live music 4. Funky DJs 5. Um, Racket, duh.
Check the fliers posted here, or check www.racketonline.com for more info.
We love you!

Unsecured networks open door for hackers, spies
By Airman 1st Class Andrew Dumboski 99th Air Base Wing Public Affairs 1/3/2007
NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. (AFPN) -- With wireless technology, consumers can easily network their computers within their household and access the Internet through any of their computers.
Consumers can sit in a lawn chair on their back porch and catch up on their e-mail and news, even do some online banking. But with this newfound convenience lies a new danger.
