In the Star Wars universe, the Jedi are a religious group who use a mysterious energy known as The Force to do good.

A Jedi's typical weapon is the lightsaber, a sword-like weapon that uses an energy blade.

The Jedi try to lead a good and virtuous life in order to best serve others. They often act as peacekeepers, defending the peace across the galaxy.

The Jedi's primary enemy are the Sith, an evil group of Force users who use their power for selfish reasons, by giving into the Dark Side of the Force.

Notable Jedi

There are many notable Jedi in the Star Wars universe.

  • Anakin Skywalker, the foretold "Chosen One" and prophecised savior of the Jedi, who would later succumb to the lure of the Dark Side of the Force. He would go on to turn on his Sith Master and return to the Light Side before dying to his injuries.
  • Obi-Wan Kenobi, a wise Jedi master who played an important role in the events of the Clone Wars. After the fall of the Jedi Order and the rise of the Galactic Empire, Obi-Wan went into hiding in order to watch over Luke Skywalker.
  • Luke Skywalker, the son of Anakin Skywalker and an important figure in the revival of the Jedi Order. Luke would go on to destroy two of the Galactic Empire's weapons of mass destruction and aid in its downfall.
  • Yoda, an old mysterious wise Jedi master about whom not much is known. He taught many Jedi the ways of their Order. When the Galactic Empire rose to power, he lived in exile on the planet Dagobah, where he would later train Luke Skywalker.
  • Mace Windu, a former member of the Jedi council who was distrusting of Anakin Skywalker and his supposed "prophecy". He had an aggressive combat style and later died during the fall of the Jedi Order at the hands of Darth Sidious.
  • Qui-Gon Jinn, a former member of the Jedi council who was deeply connected to the Force, similar to Yoda. He discovered Anakin Skywalker and his potential but would later die at the hands of Darth Maul. He would be avenged when his apprentice, Obi-Wan Kenobi, defeated Maul in lightsaber combat.
  • Ahsoka Tano, a young warrior who was also Anakin Skywalker's apprentice. She fought through the Clone Wars alongside many notable Jedi and later walked away from the Jedi traditions to forge her own path, following the end of the Clone Wars.

The Jedi Order is composed of many ranks.

  • Younglings are the youngest of all Jedi. They are typically children adopted by a Jedi member in order to be taught their ways. They often train with less powerful lightsabers.
  • Padawans are typically teenagers or young adults who successfully complete their training as a youngling. They are assigned as assistants to Knights or Masters for battle experience.
  • Knights are Jedi who complete the Jedi trials, an exam taken when a Padawan reaches the end of their training. They are often deployed in times of conflict.
  • Masters are Knights who demonstrate immense wisdom and a deep connection to the Force, as well as training a Padawan to the rank of Knight. Jedi Masters are often assigned a role on the Jedi Council, but this is not always the case.
  • High Council Members are prestigious Jedi who serve on the Jedi Council, overseeing all conflict and decisions undertaken by the Order.
  • Grand Master is the highest possible rank any Jedi can achieve. They have demonstrated a significant connection to the Force and prove themselves worthy of recognition. It is typically assigned to one Jedi only at a time, the most notable of which being Yoda.

Equipment

[change | change source]

A Jedi's primary tool is their lightsaber, a powerful sword-like device that uses a mineral known as a Kyber Crystal to power a blade that is made of energy. A lightsaber is very powerful, and can even cauterize (close through extreme heat) a wound sustained by a swing of it.

Lifestyle

[change | change source]

In Jedi culture, a life of peace and mental strength is important for all. It allows the Jedi to maintain their status as powerful peacekeepers across the Galaxy.

The Jedi strictly forbid emotional attachment or romantic involvement as to not interfere with their duties. However, the Jedi are not required to be strictly sexually celibate.[1]
