Is the "old Sega" making a comeback?
It would seem so. First, we have the much-improved Phantasy Star: Ambition of Illuminus, which was just released in Japan, with much more music from Kobayashi-san and more of the art design from PSO. Next, we have a NiGHTS game coming, which will be at least good. While the early screenshots were a bit questionable, the game has come a long way since then. Then, we have news that Samba de Amigo is coming to the Wii. Add to that quirky titles like Seaman 2, and artistic ones like Valkyrie of the Battlefield: Gallian Chronicles, on top of classic franchises like the just-announced Sega Bass Fishing for the Wii, and we begin to notice a pattern. Let's not forget Ryu ga Gotoku: Kenzan!, which is prehaps the best-looking game I've ever seen. On top of this, some of Sega's own representatives have acknowledged that they have not treated the Sonic franchise well and have pledged to do better. Companies don't usually do that. We're also seeing arcade-to-home ports, oh which Sega has historically ported plenty to home consoles, such as Ghost Squad, Virtua Tennis, and Virtua Fighter 5. Of course, AM2 has never put out crap (probably in part because, through all of Sega's transitions, AM2 has been essentially left alone). I find myself once again seeing some consistent quality (and distinctive "Seganess") in Sega's titles. (To be fair, Phantasy Star Universe had plenty of that "Sega" feel; the game was just unfinished).
In any case, I think that things are going in the right direction, finally.
