| "Worthless" |

I was at my local Software Etc. towards the end of last week, picking up odds and ends to prepare for the arrival of my PS2. A coworker was looking at the release list and calling out dates for games he knew I was interested in. I asked him when GunValkyrie was due, and the store rep who was ringing up my purchase said "Next week, but it's for the XBox." I was a little irked that he presumed I was dumb enough not to know that, but I let it slide and said "Yeah, I've got an XBox. I've got a GameCube and a PS2 and a Dreamcast, too." To this he responded "Dreamcast. That's worthless." Instead of tearing into him, I just said "Well, every game I have for it is excellent, and I've got somewhere in the neighborhood of fifty games, so it'll hold its own as far as I'm concerned." At that, the other rep chimed in and said "See, I can respect that. I've got about fifty games for it myself, and I love them all."
That, friends, is what it boils down to. I'm glad I have all of the systems I have, but so far, none of them have had the consistent and abundant quality the Dreamcast had. The Sega games are the best things on any of the new platforms, and while there are good non-Sega titles (Rogue Squadron II, Halo, Soul Reaver 2, Project Gotham Racing, a few others), pretty much every game I'm looking forward to now is a Sega title.
That's what it boils down to. People who really like games love Sega. People who got into games because of the hype around the Playstation way back when just don't get it. To their credit, Sony opened up the game market tremendously with the original Playstation, and in the long run, that will lead to games being recognized as an art form, but it also introduced a huge market of gamers who were only in it for the hype. Whatever the game magazines said buy, they bought. Sure, they even bought the Dreamcast, but they let it gather dust as soon as the press started whispering that it might fail. They simply aren't in it for the games, at least not for the substance of the games. And Sega is all about substance.
Eh, this rant has gone on too long already.
