What is a community? What do you think of when you hear the word "community?"
To live together, co-exist, to "put up with each other?" Most people think of the word community and think of their neighbors, their town, or local living area. There is, however, more than one meaning to any given word in the English language.
Lets look the word up in the dictionary, shall we?
Noun: Community
1. A group of people living in a particular local area
2.
A group of people having ethnic or cultural or religious characteristics in common3. Common ownership
4. A group of nations having common interests
5.
Agreement as to goals6. The body of people in a learned occupation
7. A district where people live; occupied primarily by private residences
Adjective: Community
1.
Affecting the people or community as a whole2. Belonging to and maintained by and for the local community
To be in a community is more than simply living with other people in a city or town. It's sharing your ideas, your dreams and aspirations, accepting the differing opinions of your neighbors and learning, despite what you find uncommon in yourselves, to understand each other. It's giving support to the one who needs consoling, defending the little guy from the town bully, rallying together with your friends and family when morale needs bolstering. It's standing together. We are one body. We are as one person. We are one mind. When one is harmed, we all are harmed. When one is lost, we all feel the pain of that loss. We yearn above all to help others in the community to feel more complete, because in doing so it helps ourselves become complete as a community. As a whole.
Stand together. Apart we will fall. When we share what we have, we find we have more. When we give in generosity, we find that we have also received something, a goodness in our hearts that nothing in this world could replace. Love and kindness. Well-being to all.
The word "community" would not exist without the word "unity." Divided and alone there can be no community. We depend on each other to exist. We need each and every one of you to feel the same, for if in say, a village, the farmer suddenly said he would no longer work, none would have food, and if the taylor said that they would no longer make clothes, all would be naked, and if the neighbor said that they would no longer care if they who lived beside them died, then none would know love....
Stand tall and proud to say "We live for each other."
