Looking for a recommendation...
Does anyone know of a local PS3 repair place, that's not too expensive?  Ours broke down for the third time now, and we're sick to death of dealing with the mail-in center.  Any recommendations?  Other than going all Office-Space on it in a field, that is.

Poets needed for homeless benefit!
My daughter has started a poetry slam event to benefit the homeless in Santa Cruz - but due to a number of recent cancellations, the event is now badly needing new poets to come share their work. If interested, please visit our event page at http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=218169384911766

We need at least 10 more people confirmed to read by the end of this week, or we may need to cancel the event - and we really don't want to do that! If you know of any writers who might be interested in reading a poem at this, please pass this on. Thanks so much!

Poetry fundraiser
My daughter (a fifth grader) came up with an idea for a youth poetry slam to raise money for the River Street Shelter, called "Poetry for Protection". We're having it the first Saturday of November, at the Ugly Mug. We've got the place, the PA, the flyers...but we need a LOT more young poets from this area (grade school to high school) to come read some poetry at it! If anyone is interested, please check out this link or message me for more info. Here's a link to the event page for it on FB too:

HELP SAVE THE SANTA CRUZ LIBRARIES!
If you love libraries. Your presence is needed.
Come to the Central branch downtown Santa Cruz at 6PM Monday 10/3.
There will be a JPB meeting concerning the cutting of staff, hours, materials and other related concerns that will affect the public.
The public voted in a 1/4 cent tax increase for the Public Libraries. If the Libraries are lead into Privatization, where does that 1/4 cent tax go??
Don't let your public  libraries become a thing of the past!

Petition to Protect the Ohlone Burial Site
http://www.change.org/petitions/city-of-santa-cruz-protect-the-ohlone-village-and-burial-site-at-branciforte-creek

Please sign it and share it with others.

We implore the City of Santa Cruz to honor the wishes of Ohlone descendant Ann Marie Sayers by taking action to permanently protect the ancient village and burial site on the Knoll at Branciforte Creek (5 Isbel Dr.) KB Home currently plans to build seven homes, driveways and a new road within the known 6,000 year old cultural and archaeological site. Out of respect for the original people of this land, the sacredness of a burial ground, and the rich cultural and historical value of the area, we ask that you not allow any more digging or construction to occur on the Knoll. Thank you.

free TMBG, anyone?
For one lucky fellow They Might Be Giants fans in Santa Cruz, I've got a spare pre-paid ticket for tomorrows show (one of our friends had to cancel last minute, and all the folks I know who wanted to go already have tix.). Not scalping or anything, just giving it away free to the first one who comments on my LJ. The show is at the Rio on Friday night. Anyone up for it?

Looking for fellow Geek-parents (or kid-friendly geeks)
We're a couple of thirty-something geeky parents, looking to start a family-friendly game night once a week, with like-minded folks. We have loads of board & card games like Flux, Chez Geek, Zombies, Uno, Wise or Otherwise, etc., and are willing to try any ones you might want to bring along. Our kids (6 & 9) also like games, so you can bring the kids along if you think they'll be interested. Once we got enough people together, we'd meet at a public venue (restaurant, etc.) until we got comfortable enough to host games at our house (sorry if that sounds over-cautious, but it's our standard practice with first-time meetings w/folks from LJ and such). If interested, friend me on LJ or send me a pm - thanks!

Family Reunion place?
I'm trying to figure out where to set up a family reunion. About 35-45 people of all ages. Won't all stay at the same place but a good 50%+ will. We'd like a hotel or cabin 'resort' that has a meeting space / conference room available for the group.
Does not have to be in Santa Cruz - lower SLV, Capitola, Aptos/Soquel ok.

The Commission for the Prevention of Violence Against Women, in partnership with Take Back Santa Cruz and Noel Murphy, invites you to participate in a vigil for Nichole Schrock on Friday, January 8 at Ocean Street and Broadway Avenue.

E-mail from Noel Murphy and Take Back Santa Cruz with information:

Nikki Schrock was shot and killed last Friday while working at the 7-11 on Broadway.

As a single parent she left behind a 2 year old daughter.  Her daughter will have to say that is where my mommy was murdered.  We would like for her to be able to say that is where the community gathered to honor her life.

Come join us for a one hour meditative candlelight vigil.  Friday January the 8th in front of the 7-11 on the corner of Broadway and Ocean from 6-7.

We will be filling the space with positive reflective energy.  We are going to band as a community to remember and reflect.  We encourage people to invision a Santa Cruz safe for every member of our community.  Together we will remember Nikki and create unity.

This vigil has been properly permitted by the city of Santa Cruz and supported by the Commission for the Prevention of Violence Against Women.

Homeless Deaths, The Sentinel, and The City Council
"The concern is that by providing food and clothing downtown, they might be enabling the street population to continue activities that are not beneficial to the city and to the store owners and residents in the area."
--Editorial in the Santa Cruz Sentinel, December 23, 2009
www.santacruzsentinel.com/local...054161

In 2009 homeless deaths in Santa Cruz reached an all time high of 47, compared to 20 in 2008. In light of these statistics, does it not make sense to provide assistance to people where they are most likely to congregate?

If you can, please take an extra interest in the issue of homelessness in Santa Cruz, people are dying at a drastic rate.
Thanks to Homeless United for Friendship and Freedom for the stats.

No thanks (as usual) to the Santa Cruz Sentinel, Ryan Coonerty, and Don Lane.

Partner Yoga?
Hello. My significant other and I just recently moved up to the Santa Cruz area. We were interested in finding a partner yoga class to join. Are there any such classes or yoga centers available? Please let me know the name, title, and/or location of any such places of interest. Thank you very much.

Horchata
Where can I buy a carton of Horchata in this town? I've tried Safeway and Trader Joe's with no luck. There's a taqueria every two blocks and yet no grocer sells horchata. This is madness.
