Lochtegate: what is wrong with this picture?

Alan Abrahamson | Published August 24, 2016

Something is seriously amiss in our cultural — indeed, our moral and ethical — landscape if Ryan Lochte’s next move turns out to be a starring turn on “Dancing with the Stars.”

The producers of DWTS must be themselves dancing with glee over this publicity coup. Everyone loves a train wreck. Who wouldn’t tune in?

Reports emerged Wednesday that Lochte would appear on the show. He was said to have struck a deal to appear on DWTS before Lochtegate — that is, his purported robbery tale and its twists and turns at the just-concluded Rio Games.

Everybody has a right to make a living and, goodness knows, Lochte may be in need of cash flow after four sponsors ditched him on Monday.

( But that’s not the only interest that is crying out here to be served.Collapse )

If he were smart, Lochte ought to get ahead of this story and get himself to rehab. Like Phelps was, he is at a crossroads: trying to figure out who he really is, and what his identity is, or ought to be, when he’s not swimming for Olympic medals.

If he does rehab and can stay clean and sober for a while, then maybe Lochte deserves a shot at something like “Dancing with the Stars.”

Then the narrative changes. Then he becomes a redemption story.

Everyone — again, everyone — makes mistakes. And everyone — this includes Ryan Lochte — deserves a second chance.

What he doesn’t deserve, right now, is the chance to capitalize on bad behavior. That’s just wrong.

Ryan Lochte in talks to join Dancing with the Stars

by Lindsay Kimble / PEOPLE

Ryan Lochte is in talks to join the celebrities competing on season 23 of Dancing with the Stars, a source tells PEOPLE.

While the cast of the latest edition of the reality competition series has yet to be announced and ABC does not comment on casting reports, the source says Lochte may be among the front-runners.

The news comes shortly after Lochte, 32, ignited controversy by fabricating a details about being robbed during his time at the Rio Olympics in August.

“I’ve been thinking about it a lot, because I have a big heart, and I feel like let down a lot of people,” Lochte told PEOPLE on Wednesday. “I feel bad that I have let people down.”

The De-Broing of Ryan Lochte

A conversation with the swimmer about the Olympic Village, downloading Tinder, and shaving every inch of your body.

Ryan Lochte, swimming freakazoid and 11-time Olympic medalist, this week begins the second phase of his quest to Rio, where, at the relatively seasoned age of 31, he will compete against waves of twentysomethings as they look to lock up spots on the U.S. Swim Team. (On Sunday he finished third in the 400-meter individual medley, and thus won't be able to defend the gold he won in London.) A few weeks ago, I sat down with Lochte to talk about training, dating, what it's like to no longer be the new kid on the block, and that one somewhat questionable catchphrase...

( Are we going to bring back the "jeah, jeah, jeah" and all that?Collapse )

What Ryan Lochte doesn't get enough credit for

Pat Forde, Yahoo Sports college football and basketball columnist | Aug 11, 2016, 12:01 PM

RIO DE JANEIRO – Descriptions of Ryan Lochte invariably center on three things: his Olympic medals, his looks and his reality TV show that made him look like a doofus.

Those things are all worth mentioning, but they create a misleading persona – the hottie airhead glamour boy superstar who is naturally gifted, at least from the neck down. That leaves out one vital element.

Here is what needs to be included in any collection of adjectives used to describe Lochte: blue-collar grinder.

He is a naturally talented swimmer, but he’s also about 6 feet tall in a sport that rewards height and reach. He has overcome that not by being handsome and goofy, but by being tenacious and tireless. ( If there is anyone in American swimming who has worked harder for longer than Lochte, I don’t know him or her.Collapse )

Not only has Lochte never hung it up, he never has stopped swimming some of the most demanding events possible. Old guys are supposed to become sprinters, but not him. The alleged pretty boy kept doing the dirty work.

We Shouldn’t Ignore Ryan Lochte’s Remarkable Career Because Of Michael Phelps

Lochte’s closing in on becoming the second-greatest swimmer ever and no one’s talking about it.

Steven Hoffer Senior Editor, The Huffington Post | 08/10/2016 01:47 pm ET

With U.S. swimmers Michael Phelps and Katie Ledecky garnering so much of our collective attention, it’s easy to forget that there’s another American out there who is quietly becoming one of the winningest Olympians of all time.

That would be Ryan Lochte, who could become the second-most-decorated swimmer — and tie as the fourth-most-decorated athlete in Olympic history — with a potential medal performance in the 200-meter individual medley on Thursday.

Lochte is currently tied with American swimmers Jenny Thompson, Dara Torres and Natalie Coughlin, who each have 12 Olympic medals. A 13th top-three showing would break that tie, moving Lochte into second place among Olympic swimmers behind ― who else? ― Michael Phelps.

Across all sports, a spot on the podium would tie Lochte for fourth in the all-time medal count. Nos. 2 and 3 are Soviet gymnasts Larisa Latynina and Nikolai Andrianov, respectively. The No. 1 Olympic medal winner of all time is, again, Michael Phelps.

Clearly, having a swimming career overlap with Phelps has its pros and cons. Phelps and Lochte have now swum together at the 2004, 2008, 2012 and 2016 Olympic games to claim gold in the 4x200-meter freestyle relay. On the other hand, Lochte missed out on several golds after finishing second to the legendary Phelps.

The teammates are also scheduled to face off in the 200-meter individual medley, with preliminary heats happening Wednesday afternoon. But let’s not forget to give Lochte some credit where credit is due.

USA Swimming Introduces 2016 Olympic Team: Ryan Lochte

28 July 2016, 10:30am

Ryan Lochte is introduced to his fourth Olympic Team, in the USA Swimming video series about the 2016 squad.

The 31 year old veteran recalled his early start in the sport and receiving candy as a reward.

He went on to discuss the excitement of representing the United States. Lochte described the sentimental feeling that comes with competing for his country.

Lochte will head to Rio as the second qualifier in the 200 IM, behind long time rival Michael Phelps. The two have posted the second and third best times in the world this year. Lochte will also swim the 800 freestyle relay.
